A generic non-invasive neuromotor interface for human-computer interaction.

Since the advent of computing, humans have sought computer input technologies that are expressive, intuitive and universal. While diverse modalities have been developed, including keyboards, mice and touchscreens, they require interaction with a device that can be limiting, especially in on-the-go scenarios. Gesture-based systems use cameras or inertial sensors to avoid an intermediary device, but tend to perform well only for unobscured movements. By contrast, brain-computer or neuromotor interfaces that directly interface with the body's electrical signalling have been imagined to solve the

An Upper-Limb Rehabilitation Exoskeleton System Controlled by MI Recognition Model With Deep Emphasized Informative Features in a VR Scene.

The prevalence of stroke continues to increase with the global aging. Based on the motor imagery (MI) brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigm and virtual reality (VR) technology, we designed and developed an upper-limb rehabilitation exoskeleton system (VR-ULE) in the VR scenes for stroke patients. The VR-ULE system makes use of the MI electroencephalogram (EEG) recognition model with a convolutional neural network and squeeze-and-excitation (SE) blocks to obtain the patient's motion intentions and control the exoskeleton to move during rehabilitation training movement. Due to the individual d

Developing and Applying a Usability Testing Methodology for a Website With Survivors of Stroke and Caregivers: Tutorial.

Survivors of stroke, particularly those with communication difficulties, are often excluded from usability testing of digital health tools. This exclusion limits the accessibility and relevance of digital interventions to this population. This tutorial presents a tailored methodology for usability testing of a co-designed website, EmpowerMe, developed to enhance self-efficacy in survivors of stroke and caregivers. A multidisciplinary team created a usability conceptual framework that included survivors with and without communication difficulties. Testing procedures were adapted to accommodate

A Flexible Clinician-Friendly Interface for Upper Limb Rehabilitation with Industrial Robots.

This paper presents a flexible software with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) designed to assist clinicians in upper limb robotic rehabilitation sessions. The flexibility comes from the fact that, since it relies on the Robot Operating System 2 (ROS2) framework, it is potentially compatible with any collaborative industrial robot, with relatively low integration effort. The software collects and analyzes data related to each session to identify critical movement directions for each patient, detecting improvements or regressions through statistical tests, thus reducing subjectivity. Moreover, i

The potential use of virtual reality in vestibular rehabilitation of motion sickness.

OBJECTIVE: Motion sickness (MS) can be triggered by direct or indirect stimuli due to mismatches in the visual-vestibular autonomic pathways. Various studies in the literature have shown that virtual reality technologies can generate provocative stimuli for MS. Therefore, our primary aim is to investigate the usability of virtual reality systems in MS rehabilitation METHODS: 20 normal and 19 MS patients were included. A total of six virtual reality rehabilitation sessions (VRrs) with a game called "Roller Coaster Dreams" playable via PlayStation VR Head Mounted Display were applied thrice a we

Running virtual reality experiments online: A brief introduction and tutorial.

Achieving meaningful and representative findings in cognitive/behavioural research requires both externally valid experimental settings and representative participant samples. Virtual reality (VR) has become a powerful tool for enhancing realism while maintaining control of experimental environments. Simultaneously, online testing broadens and diversifies samples. Combining these approaches-running VR experiments online-is compelling but remains challenging due to incompatibilities between tools used in lab-based VR studies and online testing. This paper offers a practical solution to bridge t

From Controllers to Multimodal Input: A Chronological Review of XR Interaction Across Device Generations.

This study provides a chronological analysis of how Extended Reality (XR) interaction techniques have evolved from early controller-centered interfaces to natural hand- and gaze-based input and, more recently, to multimodal input, with a particular focus on the role of XR devices. We collected 46 user study-based XR interaction papers published between 2016 and 2024, including only studies that explicitly defined their interaction techniques and reported quantitative and/or qualitative evaluation results. For each study, we documented the XR hardware and software development kits (SDKs) used a

chARpack: The Chemistry Augmented Reality Package.

Off-loading visualization and interaction into virtual reality (VR) using head-mounted displays (HMDs) has gained considerable popularity in simulation sciences, particularly in chemical modeling. Because of its unique way of soft immersion, augmented reality (AR) HMD technology has even more potential to be integrated into the everyday workflow of computational chemists. In this work, we present our environment to explore the prospects of AR in chemistry and general molecular sciences: The chemistry in Augmented Reality package (chARpack). Besides providing an extensible framework, our softwa

A modularity design approach to behavioral research with immersive virtual reality: A SkyrimVR-based behavioral experimental framework.

Virtual reality (VR) has been shown to be a potential research tool, yet the gap between traditional and VR behavioral experiment systems poses a challenge for many behavioral researchers. To address the challenge posed, the present study first adopted a modularity design strategy and proposed a five-module architectural framework for a VR behavioral experiment system that aimed to reduce complexity and costs of development. Applying the five-module architectural framework, the present study developed the SkyrimVR-based behavioral experimental framework (SkyBXF) module, a basic experimental fr

Design of an Interactive Mind Calligraphy System by Affective Computing and Visualization Techniques for Real-Time Reflections of the Writer's Emotions.

A novel interactive system for calligraphy called mind calligraphy that reflects the writer's emotions in real time by affective computing and visualization techniques is proposed. Differently from traditional calligraphy, which emphasizes artistic expression, the system is designed to visualize the writer's mental-state changes during writing using audio-visual tools. The writer's mental state is measured with a brain wave machine to yield attention and meditation signals, which are classified next into the four types of emotion, namely, focusing, relaxation, calmness, and anxiety. These emot

A new geometric combination of cutting and bleeding modules for surgical simulation systems.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cutting and bleeding are often independent of each other in the traditional virtual surgery system because of the differences in the calculation of physical models and the lack of internal structure. In order to improve the fidelity of virtual surgery scene and the training value for surgeons, a new geometric combination of cutting and bleeding modules is introduced. METHODS: In this paper, we introduce a cutting model based on volume rendering and meshless method. The multidimensional parameters derived from the gray values are presented to participate in the calcu

SMMARTS: An Open Architecture Development Platform for Modular, Mixed, and Augmented Reality Procedural and Interventional Simulators.

INTRODUCTION: Different simulators often share elements, resulting in different laboratories doing redundant work. This can lead to higher development and acquisition costs, proprietary, incompatible technology, lack of interoperability, and large inventories that reduce accessibility to the benefits of simulation. Simulation technology can become more affordable and scalable with open architecture and modular design. We describe the System of Modular Mixed and Augmented Reality Tracking Simulators (SMMARTS) open architecture, rapid development platform for designing and building modular proce
