Herein is described the case of a 28-year-old woman in whom uterine artery embolization (UAE) was performed to treat intramural ectopic pregnancy. The intramural ectopic pregnancy was diagnosed at magnetic resonance imaging, which showed a gestational sac surrounded completely by myometrium. The UAE procedure was uncomplicated, with satisfactory results. Intramural ectopic pregnancy may be treated using UAE, which aids in maintaining fertility.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the estimated absorbed radiation doses to the ovaries and skin entrance during uterine artery embolization (UAE) for leiomyomas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiation dose was measured in 20 patients who underwent UAE for leiomyomas. Measurements were obtained by placing lithium fluoride dosimeters both into the posterior fornix of the vagina and on the skin at the beam entrance site. Patient doses were obtained with thermoluminescent dosimeters.
RESULTS: The mean fluoroscopic time was 21.89 minutes, and the mean number of angiographic exposures was 44. The mean estimated abs

BACKGROUND: Uterine artery embolization is an effective and safe technique for the treatment of uterine fibroids, but its use remains controversial for women who wish to procreate.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to study the clinical, anatomic, and obstetrical results of uterine artery embolization in patients of childbearing age not eligible for myomectomy.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of 398 female patients under the age of 43 years who were treated by uterine artery embolization between 2003 and 2017 for symptomatic fibroids and/or adenomyosis. Uterine artery embolizat

BACKGROUND: Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is used to treat severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). According to a few studies, UAE for PPH was associated with preterm birth, fetal growth restriction (FGR), and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) in subsequent pregnancies. These previous studies, however, lacked controls, and to the best of our knowledge, no systematic literature reviews have been conducted thus far. We report the results of our retrospective case-control study of pregnancies after UAE at a single center and include a literature review to evaluate the risk of PAS in pregnancies aft

BACKGROUND: Myomatous erythrocytosis syndrome, a form of secondary polycythemia associated with uterine leiomyomas, increases the risk of thrombosis and traditionally has been treated with hysterectomy.
CASE: The patient is a 68-year-old woman with 7-year history of polycythemia initially thought to be secondary to a gastrointestinal stromal tumor that persisted after resection. A subsequent search for an alternative etiology led to the discovery of an 11.2-cm submucosal leiomyoma and likelihood of myomatous erythrocytosis syndrome. The patient declined surgical management and continued to un

A case report of fatal sepsis after uterine artery embolization (UAE) with microspheres is presented. At autopsy, microspheres were found not only in arteries in the leiomyomata and myometrium but also in the parametria and the vagina, leading to a necrotic vaginal wall and uterine cervix. At present, polyvinyl alcohol particles are usually used in UAE. Recently, study results of the use of microspheres in embolization procedures have become available. The rationale for the choice of a specific embolization particle and the clinical implications of possible sepsis after UAE are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Uterine artery embolization is increasingly used as an alternative to myomectomy, hysterectomy, and medical treatment for the management of symptomatic leiomyomata.
CASE: A woman with an 18-week-size fibroid uterus who underwent uterine artery embolization developed a 3-cm, exquisitely tender, hypopigmented, necrotic-appearing area on the right labium minus. Spontaneous resolution occurred over 4 weeks.
CONCLUSION: Labial necrosis is a possible complication of uterine artery embolization and may be successfully managed with conservative therapy.

A patient experienced continuing pain and growth of a broad-based pedunculated myoma 6 months after uterine artery embolization (UAE). A 7-cm myoma was found growing directly from the serosa of the fallopian tube and was removed laparoscopically. To our knowledge, this is the first report of laparoscopic myomectomy performed after failure of UAE. This case identifies one of the predictable limitations of UAE of which gynecologists must be cognizant when recommending the procedure.

We describe the case of a 48-year-old woman who presented with traumatic rupture of a giant leiomyoma and massive hemoperitoneum caused by slipping and falling in the bathroom. She was in shock on arrival, and resuscitation was performed. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed massive intra-abdominal hematoma and extravasation from the subserous leiomyoma. Uterine artery embolization was performed, but she went into shock again after 6 h. The second contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed persistence of extravasation. During 2nd UAE, an angiogram revealed extravasation originating

PURPOSE: Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is gaining popularity as an alternative to hysterectomy for the treatment of fibroids. Although minimally invasive treatments such as UAE offer the potential of fewer complications, shorter hospital stay, and quicker recovery than surgery, there have been few published data on tolerance and recovery in patients undergoing UAE.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a multicenter prospective single-arm clinical treatment trial involving the practices of 11 interventional radiologists in eight Ontario university-affiliated and community hospitals. Between Nov

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pregnancy outcomes, complications and neonatal outcomes in women who had previously undergone uterine arterial embolization.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 187 patients treated with uterine arterial embolization for symptomatic uterine fibroids between 2005-2008 was performed. Uterine arterial embolization was performed using polyvinyl alcohol particles (500-900 mm in diameter). Pregnancies were identified using screening questionnaires and the study database.
RESULTS: There were 15 spontaneous pregnancies. Of these, 12.5% were miscarriages (n = 2), and 87.5% were s

OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical efficacy of uterine arterial embolization (UAE) in the treatment of adenomyosis.
METHODS: UAE procedures were performed in 23 patients with adenomyosis. Two 3.0 F FASTRACKER-325 tubes were placed into bilateral uterine arteries respectively and the fresh gelfoam particles mixed with antibiotic drugs were used to embolise the arteries. After treatment the symptoms and uterine volume of all patients were investigated.
RESULTS: All clinical symptoms of 23 patients relieved. Dysmenorrhea completely disappeared in 19 patients, significantly alleviated in 2 patien

Uterine artery embolization is a minimally invasive, uterus-preserving treatment for symptomatic uterine leiomyomas that is generally considered safe; delayed infectious complications are uncommon and may be difficult to distinguish from postembolization syndrome. This report presents a case of delayed pyometra associated with a necrotizing leiomyoma following uterine artery embolization. A 41-year-old multiparous woman with a history of two cesarean deliveries underwent bilateral uterine artery embolization for a symptomatic large FIGO type 2 submucosal leiomyoma after declining surgical trea

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this article was to evaluate MRI features of uterine leiomyomas that predict volumetric response after uterine artery embolization (UAE). MATERIALS AND METHODS. This retrospective study included 75 patients with 212 uterine leiomyomas who were successfully treated between August 2013 and December 2018. To predict uterine volumetric response, age, number of lesions, and baseline uterine volume were assessed. To predict leiomyoma volumetric response, a multivariate regression analysis was performed to evaluate six predictive factors: location, baseline leiomyoma volume,

Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a well-established therapy for uterine fibroids, with safety and efficacy demonstrated in several comparative randomized trials. It is a minimally invasive procedure, which allows for rapid recovery and return to normal activities. Most studies demonstrate outcomes similar to those of myomectomy with a reintervention rate of 20% to 30% at 5 years after therapy. While pregnancy is often successful after UAE, limited comparative data suggest that myomectomy may be preferred in those patients who have not had prior fibroid interventions. UAE should be discusse

We decided to evaluate the efficacy and complications of uterine artery embolization (UAE) in patients with symptomatic uterine fibroids. Sixty-five premenopausal patients, without considering the fibroids size and its location, were treated by bilateral UAE. At baseline and after 3, 6, and 12 months MRI was obtained to determine the uterine length and fibroid diameter. In addition, symptoms of the patients were documented at these follow-up schedules. UAE was successful in 62 (95.4%) cases. Complete infarction rate of the fibroid was 83.1%. After 12 months, the uterine length showed a decreas
