PURPOSE: Posterior uveitis is a common chorioretinal pathology affecting all ages worldwide and is a frequent reason for referral to the retina clinic. The spectrum of etiologies for uveitis is very broad and includes infectious and auto-immune diseases. Inflammation can be confined to the eye or may be a part of systemic disease. A useful outline is therefore proposed to aid in the correct diagnosis of these challenging entities. The situation is further complicated by the fact that many neoplastic conditions resemble features of posterior uveitis; they are known as "masqueraders of uveitis".

Treatment of infectious posterior uveitis represents a therapeutic challenge for ophthalmologists. The eye is a privileged site, maintained by blood ocular barriers, which limits penetration of systemic antimicrobials into the posterior segment. In addition, topical and subconjunctival therapies are incapable of producing sufficient drug concentrations, intraocularly. Posterior infectious uveitis can be caused by bacteria, virus, fungi, or protozoa. Mode of treatment varies greatly based on the infectious etiology. Certain drugs have advantages over others in the treatment of infectious uveiti

AIM: To describe the different retinal morphological characteristics that can present on optical coherence topography (OCT) in a spectrum of uveitic diseases.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature and our own OCT image archive for characteristic features that may be suggestive of a particular disease process.
RESULTS: OCT demonstrates a variety of characteristic morphological changes, some that may point towards a specific disease process. We describe the various forms of macular oedema found in uveitis as well as OCT features typically found in multifocal choroiditis, serpiginous chorioretini

A 48-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of abnormal pulmonary shadows and a decrease in visual acuity. He had a history of tuberculosis 20 years ago. The chest roentgenogram showed multiple pulmonary nodules throughout both lung fields. No definitive diagnosis was established either by brushing cytology or biopsy through bronchoscopy or percutaneous needle biopsy. Pathological examination of open lung biopsy specimen revealed that extensive, hyalinized lamellar collagen bundles arranged in whorls, parallel arrays. Plasma cells and lymphocytes were found between the collagen ban

An array of retinochoroid imaging modalities aid in comprehensive evaluation of the immunopathological changes in the retina and choroid, forming the core component for the diagnosis and management of inflammatory disorders such as uveitis. The recent technological breakthroughs have led to the development of imaging platforms that can evaluate the layers of retina and choroid and the structural and functional alteration in these tissues. Ophthalmologists heavily rely on imaging modalities such as dye-based angiographies (fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green angiography), optical cohe

Development and characterization of dexamethasone (DEX)-encapsulated polymeric nanomicelles have been reported. A low molecular weight di-block copolymer was synthesized and characterized for its structure, molecular weights, critical micelle concentration (CMC), and cytotoxicity in ocular cells. In order to delineate the effects of drug-polymer interactions on drug solubilization in micelle core, a response surface methodology was generated with the help of SAS 9.02 (exploratory model). The method for preparing micelle was modified based on the results obtained from exploratory model. The for

The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of 245 patients with posterior uveitis or panuveitis in order to determine their etiologies and collect some epidemiological data. A specific diagnosis was made in 80.4%. Behcet's disease (22.4%), toxoplasmosis (22%), and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome (9%) were the most common causes of posterior uveitis or panuveitis. No case of confirmed sarcoïdosis was found in our series.

Tacrolimus (FK506) is effective in Japanese endogenous posterior uveitis (EPU), but there is limited data on its role in refractory EPU where cyclosporin A (CsA) toxicity/resistance develops. This open prospective clinical study aimed to assess the efficacy and adverse effects of low-dose FK506 therapy in western patients with refractory EPU where CsA resistance or toxicity has developed. Patients with CsA resistant/toxic EPU were started on low-dose (< 0.10 mg/kg/day) FK506 therapy. Immunosuppressive efficacy was assessed by visual acuity, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy (BIO) scores, and c
