Immunization of hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Worldwide, over 40,000 hematopoietic cell transplants (HCT) are carried out each year, with the majority of patients surviving long term. Owing to their new immune systems, these patients are susceptible to a variety of preventable infectious diseases. The 2009 influenza pandemic, the increase in pertussis and antibiotic-resistant pneumococcus, as well as recent outbreaks of measles and mumps in immunocompetent individuals further highlight the need for effective revaccination of HCT recipients. Post-transplant vaccine guidelines, including those published in 2009, recommend immunization of al

Association between Glycosylated Hemoglobin Levels and Vaccine Preventable Diseases: A Systematic Review.

People with diabetes are at higher risk of serious complications from many vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Some studies have highlighted the potential impact of glycosylated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c), but no systematic review has synthesized these findings. Of the 823 identified studies, 3 were included, for a total of 705,349 participants. Regarding the incidence of herpes zoster (HZ), one study found that higher HbA1c levels at the baseline (>10.3%) were associated with a significantly higher risk of HZ of 44%, compared to those with a good HbA1c control (6.7%). On the contrary, the sec

Impact of social distancing on incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases, South Korea.

While vaccination remains the cornerstone of controlling vaccine-preventive diseases (VPD), little is known about the effect of social distancing on incidence of VPDs. We investigated the impact of social distancing practiced during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the incidence of selected VPDs in South Korea. National surveillance data on monthly incidence of hepatitis A, hepatitis B, varicella, mumps, invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), and pertussis were retrieved and compared the VPD incidences in 2020 to the average of the last 4 years (2015-2019) of the corresponding

Issues in pediatric vaccine-preventable diseases in low- to middle-income countries.

The highest burden of pediatric vaccine-preventable disease is found in developing nations where resource constraints pose the greatest challenge, impacting disease diagnosis and surveillance as well as the implementation of large scale vaccination programmes. In November 2012, a Working Group Meeting convened in Casablanca to describe and discuss the status with respect to 8 vaccine-preventable diseases (pertussis, pneumococcal disease, measles-mumps-rubella-varicella (MMRV), rotavirus and meningococcal meningitis) to identify and consider ways of overcoming obstacles to pediatric vaccine imp

Vaccine-preventable diseases in humanitarian emergencies among refugee and internally-displaced populations.

Humanitarian emergencies may result in breakdown of regular health services including routine vaccination programs. Displaced populations including refugees and internally displaced persons are particularly susceptible to outbreaks of communicable diseases such as vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Common VPDs encountered in humanitarian emergencies include measles, polio, and depending on geographical location, meningococcal meningitis, yellow fever, hepatitis A, and cholera. We conducted a review of 50 published articles from 2000 to 2015 concerning VPDs in humanitarian emergencies. This a

Susceptibility to vaccine-preventable diseases in a sexually transmitted disease clinic population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics often serve a population that has low medical care utilization. The objective of this study was to determine the susceptibility of an STD clinic population to vaccine-preventable diseases. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study of immunization practices and susceptibility to vaccine-preventable diseases was undertaken by enrolling consecutive patients attending an STD clinic. Demographic information and a history of disease or immunization was assessed by interview. Immunity to measles and rubella was determined by measuring

Reported vaccine-preventable diseases--United States, 1993, and the childhood immunization initiative.

In the United States, children are routinely vaccinated against nine diseases--diphtheria, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), hepatitis B, measles, mumps, pertussis, poliomyelitis (paralytic), rubella, and tetanus. Based on public health surveillance and epidemiologic assessment of most of these diseases, the impact of childhood vaccination on reported occurrence has been substantial: provisional surveillance data for 1993 indicate that for five of these diseases and for congenital rubella syndrome (CRS), the number of reported cases is at or near the lowest levels ever, suggesting near inte

Coverage rates against vaccine-preventable diseases among healthcare workers in Sicily (Italy).

BACKGROUND: Vaccination of healthcare workers (HCWs) reduces the risk of occupational vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs), prevents their nosocomial transmission and preserves healthcare delivery during outbreaks. Extensive implementation of vaccination programmes for HCWs allowed the elimination or control of several VPDs within healthcare facilities; despite these, the vaccine adherence rates among HCWs are persistently suboptimal. METHODS: A questionnaire was self-administered by HCWs to assess their vaccination rates against several VPDs and self-reported immunity in two university hospit

Immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases in Finnish pediatric healthcare workers in 2015.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) pose a risk to themselves and their patients if not protected against vaccine-preventable diseases. Alarmingly, lacking immunity has been reported in several studies. We assessed the immunity against vaccine-preventable diseases in 157 pediatric HCWs in Helsinki Children's Hospital. The HCWs enrolled answered a questionnaire and gave a serum sample. Antibodies were measured with EIA against MMR-diseases, tetanus and diphtheria toxins, Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis A (HAV), varicella zoster and pertussis toxin. Neutralizing antibodies against poliovirus 1, 2 and 3 were
