Impact of Prolonged Sitting on Peripheral and Central Vascular Health.

Prolonged, uninterrupted sitting negatively impacts markers of peripheral vascular health, particularly, vasodilatory function of leg arteries. Whether sitting can similarly impact measures of central vascular health, as well as overall leg vasoreactivity (i.e., vasodilatory and vasoconstrictor function) remains unknown. To address this, measurements were made in relatively healthy participants (i.e., free of overt disease; n = 20, age = 26 ± 7; body mass index = 30 ± 7 kg/m2; 7 female) pre, during and post 3 hours of uninterrupted sitting. Measures of central vascular health included arterial

Assessment of Vascular Health With Photoplethysmographic Waveforms From the Fingertip.

Although the flow-mediated dilation (FMD) index is considered the most reliable indicator of vascular endothelial function, previous studies have proved that the dilatation index (DI) measured by the highly reproducible air pressure sensing system (APSS) is just as accurate in effectively determining endothelial function. Besides, not only is APSS cheaper than the instrument for FMD ratio measurement, but operation of the former is also simple to facilitate its domestic use. However, APSS had the pitfall of being time consuming because of the large amount of computation involved. This paper at

Lifestyle and metabolic approaches to maximizing erectile and vascular health.

Oxidative stress and inflammation, which disrupt nitric oxide (NO) production directly or by causing resistance to insulin, are central determinants of vascular diseases including ED. Decreased vascular NO has been linked to abdominal obesity, smoking and high intakes of fat and sugar, which all cause oxidative stress. Men with ED have decreased vascular NO and circulating and cellular antioxidants. Oxidative stress and inflammatory markers are increased in men with ED, and all increase with age. Exercise increases vascular NO, and more frequent erections are correlated with decreased ED, both

Maternal Vascular Health in Pregnancy and Postpartum After Assisted Reproduction.

Although most pregnancies after assisted reproduction are associated with a favorable outcome for the mother and infant, reports of abnormal vascular adaptation in early pregnancy and emerging maternal and perinatal pathology warrant further investigations. Herein we extended our previous work and further examined whether perturbations of blood pressure and endothelial function during the first trimester in conceptions with nonphysiological corpus luteum (CL) numbers would persist through the third trimester of pregnancy and into the postpartum period. We investigated both maternal and perinat

Vascular Health Profile predicts cardiovascular outcomes in patients with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported the development of a novel high dimensional cytomic assay, the Vascular Health Profile (VHP) based on measurements of angiogenic circulating hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (CHSPCAng ) and extracellular vesicles (EVs), that discovered a unique signature, differentiating the vascular status of diabetics and normal healthy controls. Here, we present data from a 3-year follow-up to evaluate the power of the VHP to identify individuals at risk for cardiovascular (CV) events. METHODS: The original data were generated as previously described by measuring a

Bone health and vascular calcification relationships in chronic kidney disease.

Abnormal bone in chronic kidney disease (CKD) may adversely affect vascular calcification via disordered calcium and phosphate metabolism. In this context, bone health should be viewed as a prerequisite for the successful prevention/treatment of vascular calcification (VC) along with controlled parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion, the use of calcium-based phosphate binders and vitamin D therapy. In CKD patients, VC occurs more frequently and progresses more rapidly than in the general population, and is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. A number of

Lung endothelial cell heterogeneity in health and pulmonary vascular disease.

Lung endothelial cells (ECs) are essential for maintaining organ function and homeostasis. Despite sharing some common features with ECs from organ systems, lung ECs exhibit significant heterogeneity in morphology, function, and gene expression. This heterogeneity is increasingly recognized as a key contributor to the development of pulmonary diseases like pulmonary hypertension (PH). In this mini-review, we explore the evolving understanding of lung EC heterogeneity, particularly through the lens of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technologies. These advances have provided unprecedente

Renin-Angiotensin Signaling and Vascular Function: Insights into Health and Disease.

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is an essential regulator of vascular structure and function, and dysregulation of angiotensin II (Ang II) signaling plays a critical role in the development of hypertension and associated vascular complications. Ang II exerts its vascular actions primarily through the angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), activating canonical and non-canonical signaling pathways that extend beyond classical G-protein-dependent signaling mechanisms. Here, we review the literature on tissue-specific RAS, Ang II-dependent and Ang II-independent signaling mechanisms of vascular

A peripheral perspective on brain health: vascular and skeletal muscle contributions.

Age- and disease-related declines in brain health contribute to impairments in physical function, yet effective approaches to lessen these declines remain limited. Overall health is governed by a network of interdependent organ systems, such that dysfunction in one system can propagate across others. Although the brain has been viewed as a top-down regulator of vital functions, evidence indicates that cognition is affected by signals from peripheral organs. This interorgan communication likely explains the coexistence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias with cardiovascular and metabol
