Isolation, identification, and significance of salivary Veillonella spp., Prevotella spp., and Prevotella salivae in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

The global prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is on the rise, prompting significant attention from researchers worldwide. IBD entails chronic inflammatory disorders of the intestinal tract, characterized by alternating flares and remissions. Through high-throughput sequencing, numerous studies have unveiled a potential microbial signature for IBD patients showing intestinal enrichment of oral-associated bacteria. Simultaneously, the oral microbiome can be perturbed by intestinal inflammation. Our prior investigation, based on 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, underscored elevated abund

Bilateral abscessed orchiepididymitis associated with sepsis caused by Veillonella parvula and Clostridium perfringens: case report and review of the literature.

Veillonella species is a gram-negative coccus which is part of the anaerobic normal flora in the oral cavity, small intestine, upper respiratory tract, vagina, and urinary tract. The role that this organism plays in infection is not well known, and it is generally associated with other bacteria. We present a case of bilateral abscessed orchiepididymitis associated with septicemia due to Veillonella parvula and, later, to Clostridium perfringens, with the development of severe renal insufficiency and septic shock, which resolved favorably with antibiotic therapy, treatment of shock, and hyperba

Disseminated Native Tricuspid Valve Infective Endocarditis and Vertebral Osteomyelitis Secondary to Veillonella dispar in a Patient Who Injects Drugs.

We present the case of a 50-year-old man presenting with fever, back pain, persistent bacteremia with Veillonella dispar, echocardiographic evidence of a tricuspid valve vegetation increasing in size, and magnetic resonance imaging suggesting new vertebral osteomyelitis. He was successfully treated with intravenous ceftriaxone for six weeks. Deep-seated infections secondary to Veillonella species are rare, but cases of endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and meningitis have been reported in the literature. Given Veillonella species are normal human commensals present in the oropharyngeal flora, we su

Veillonellaceae family members uniquely alter the cervical metabolic microenvironment in a human three-dimensional epithelial model.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a gynecologic disorder characterized by a shift in cervicovaginal microbiota from Lactobacillus spp. dominance to a polymicrobial biofilm composed of diverse anaerobes. We utilized a well-characterized human three-dimensional cervical epithelial cell model in conjunction with untargeted metabolomics and immunoproteomics analyses to determine the immunometabolic contribution of three members of the Veillonellaceae family: Veillonella atypica, Veillonella montpellierensis and Megasphaera micronuciformis at this site. We found that Veillonella spp. infections induced s

Comparison of oral and gut microbiome highlights the role of oral bacteria in systemic inflammation in HIV.

UNLABELLED: Chronic HIV-1 infection is associated with increased inflammation-related comorbidities, despite effective viral suppression with antiretroviral therapy. While the role of the gut microbiome in inflammation is well studied, the contribution of the oral microbiome remains less clear. This study investigates the relationship between the oral and gut microbiomes in driving systemic inflammation in persons with HIV. This cross-sectional study utilized archived samples from 198 participants (99 with HIV and 99 without HIV). Oral and gut microbiome composition was analyzed via 16S rRNA s

Reduced Abundance of Nitrate-Reducing Bacteria in the Oral Microbiota of Women with Future Preeclampsia.

The oral microbiota can contribute to the regulation of blood pressure by increasing the availability of nitric oxide through the reduction of nitrate to nitrite, which can be converted into nitric oxide in the stomach and then enter the circulation. It is unclear if the composition of the oral microbiota is different between women who do and do not develop preeclampsia. This study aimed to compare the composition of the buccal microbiota just prior to the development of symptoms at 36 weeks gestation in 12 women who developed late-onset preeclampsia and 24 matched women who remained normotens

An Overview of Adenoid Microbiome Using 16S rRNA Gene Sequencing-Based Metagenomic Analysis.

Background and Objectives: the upper respiratory tract harbors the highest bacterial density in the whole respiratory system. Adenoids, which are located in the nasopharynx, are a major site of bacterial colonies in the upper airways. Our goal was to use culture-independent molecular techniques to identify the breadth of bacterial diversity in the adenoid vegetations of children suffering from chronic rhinosinusitis and obstructive sleep apnea. Materials and methods: in total, 21 adenoid samples were investigated using amplification and sequencing of the V3-V4 hypervariable region of the bacte

Microbial collagenase activity is linked to oral-gut translocation in advanced chronic liver disease.

Microbiome perturbations are associated with advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD), but how microorganisms contribute to disease mechanisms is unclear. Here we analysed metagenomes of paired saliva and faecal samples from an ACLD cohort of 86 individuals, plus 2 control groups of 52 healthy individuals and 14 patients with sepsis. We identified highly similar oral and gut bacterial strains, including Veillonella and Streptococcus spp., which increased in absolute abundance in the gut of patients with ACLD compared with controls. These microbial translocators uniquely share a prtC gene encoding

Metagenomic analysis of oral microbiota in Chinese children with obesity.

Childhood obesity represents an increasingly severe global public‑health concern, whose precise etiology remains incompletely elucidated and is likely multifactorial. In addition to genetic and lifestyle factors, mounting evidence indicates that the microbes in the digestive tract play a crucial role in the development and progression of obesity. Among them, the oral microbiota may contribute to obesity through mechanisms such as inducing systemic chronic inflammation and promoting gut microbiota dysbiosis. In the present study, saliva samples were collected from 9 obese children and 9 normal-

Metagenomic analysis of bacterial species in tongue microbiome of current and never smokers.

Cigarette smoking affects the oral microbiome, which is related to various systemic diseases. While studies that investigated the relationship between smoking and the oral microbiome by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing have been performed, investigations involving metagenomic sequences are rare. We investigated the bacterial species composition in the tongue microbiome, as well as single-nucleotide variant (SNV) profiles and gene content of these species, in never and current smokers by utilizing metagenomic sequences. Among 234 never smokers and 52 current smokers, beta diversity, as assessed by
