[Non-verbal communication in Alzheimer's disease].

This review underlines the importance of non-verbal communication in Alzheimer's disease. A social psychological perspective of communication is privileged. Non-verbal behaviors such as looks, head nods, hand gestures, body posture or facial expression provide a lot of information about interpersonal attitudes, behavioral intentions, and emotional experiences. Therefore they play an important role in the regulation of interaction between individuals. Non-verbal communication is effective in Alzheimer's disease even in the late stages. Patients still produce non-verbal signals and are responsiv

Hostile behavior links negative childhood family relationships to heart rate reactivity and recovery in young adulthood.

Prior research has demonstrated that vulnerability to stress is influenced by early life experiences. This study evaluates the impact of negative childhood family relationships on cardiovascular stress reactivity in young adulthood. Participants (age 18-22) from families characterized by negative (n=39) or positive relationships (n=36) engaged in a role-play conflict task. Hostile/aggressive verbal behaviors during the task were observed, and blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) responses were measured before, during, and after the task. Participants from negative families engaged in more h

Larry Jacoby: An appreciation of his early research.

Larry Jacoby was one of the most creative experimental psychologists of his generation. I describe four papers from early in his career that were influential to debates at the time and that are still well worth reading today. These are Jacoby and Bartz (Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 11[4], 561-565, 1972), Jacoby ((Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 17[6], 649-667, 1978), Jacoby and Dallas (Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 110[3], 306-340, 1981), and Jacoby (Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 22[5], 485-508, 1983). The last two papers show

How Does Family Communication Relate to Adolescent Dating Violence and Externalizing Behaviors? The Role of Parent-Adolescent Risk Communication and Attitudes toward Violence in a Nicaraguan Sample.

Family plays a critical role for adolescent socialization. Parents in particular can promote either adolescent prosocial or problem behaviors. The purpose of the present study is two-fold. The first is to investigate the main and interaction effects of family communication (i.e., verbal hostility and expressiveness) on adolescent risk behaviors (i.e., dating violence and externalizing behaviors). The second is to test whether family communication is indirectly associated with adolescent risk behaviors through parent-adolescent risk communication and adolescent attitudes toward violence. Covert verbal mediation in arbitrary matching to sample.

Covert verbal mediation was examined in an arbitrary matching-to-sample (MTS) preparation with a high-verbal group (college students) and a low-verbal group (adults with intellectual disabilities). Arbitrary relations were established between nonsense words, visual symbols, objects, and hand signs. Task difficulty was balanced for the groups based on errors during acquisition. All participants experienced a hand sign condition, and three MTS conditions each with a unique configuration of the comparison array: fixed location, random location, and all symbols the same. The same symbol condition

Gender differences in aggressive behavior at admission to a psychiatric hospital.

As aggressive behavior has a negative impact in general psychiatry, its influence specifically from a gender-related point of view in an in-patient population of a psychiatric clinic was assessed at the time of admission. A group of 521 successively admitted psychiatric in-patients was investigated at admission with the help of the "Social Dysfunction and Aggression Scale". A slightly higher frequency and intensity of "verbal aggressive behavior" was observed in males. Within the other categories of aggressive behavior ("tension", "physical violence to things", and "assaults"), however, the pe

Absence of verbal recall or memory for symptom acquisition in fear and trauma exposure: a conceptual case for fear conditioning and learned nonuse in assessment and treatment.

Absence of memory or verbal recall for symptom acquisition in fear and trauma exposure, as well as absence of successful coping behavior for life events, is associated with a number of diagnoses, including traumatic brain injury, posttraumatic stress disorder, pain, and anxiety. The difficulty with diagnosis and treatment planning based on the absence of recall, memory, and successful coping behavior is threefold: (1) these assessments do not distinguish between disruption of behavior and lack of capacity, (2) the absence of verbal recall and memory complicates cognitive-based treatment, and (

On the reinforcing effects of the content of verbal attention.

During a functional analysis, a boy with autism and oppositional defiant disorder displayed destructive behavior that was maintained by attention in the form of verbal reprimands (e.g., "Don't hit me"). In a second analysis, contingent verbal reprimands produced higher rates of the behavior than contingent statements that were unrelated to the target response (e.g., "It is sunny today"), suggesting that some forms of attention were more reinforcing than others. A treatment based on these analyses reduced the behavior to near-zero levels.

Implications of articulatory awareness in learning literacy in English as a second language.

The articulatory awareness task, which was found by Griffiths and Frith (2002) to discriminate ex-dyslexic from non-dyslexic adults, was given to three groups of Japanese college students with different English reading abilities. Two unexpected results emerged: (1) Articulatory awareness performance was generally poor across the groups, thereby suggesting that poor articulatory awareness is not unique to dyslexia but rather to reading difficulty in general, and (2) There was a weak but significant positive correlation between articulatory awareness and English reading ability. Implications are

The effects of inflectional variation on fast mapping of verbs in English and Spanish.

To use morphological cues for syntactic bootstrapping, children must recognize that inflectionally varying words (e.g., pushes, pushed) are instances of the same word. Children who are exposed to languages with richer inflectional morphologies than English, such as Spanish, encounter instances of inflectional variation more often. Thus they may learn to recognize inflectionally varying words as instances of the same word at an earlier age than do learners of English. English-and Spanish-learning 3-year olds were taught novel verbs in a fast mapping task under two conditions: no-inflectional va

Agitation among elderly persons at adult day-care centers: the experiences of relatives and staff members.

Two hundred participants (mean age = 80 years) from five senior day-care centers were included in a study of agitation. Staff members at the centers and participants' relatives rated the frequency with which participants displayed agitated behaviors, via an expanded version of the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory. The most frequent behaviors noted were general restlessness, repetitious sentences, verbal interruptions, and pacing. A three-factor solution for staff members' ratings included (a) physically nonaggressive behaviors, including general restlessness and pacing; (b) verbally agitate

Treating selective mutism in a paediatric rehabilitation patient by altering environmental reinforcement contingencies.

Selective mutism is a disorder which can cause severe social and academic impairment, and for which a wide variety of treatment approaches have been used, with varying degrees of success. Selective mutism can be conceptualized as the lack of generalization of a class of operant responses (e.g. audible and comprehensible verbalizations) across environmental contexts. The rehabilitation hospital setting, in which the patient is seen daily by multiple people in multiple settings, is particularly well-suited for implementing a systematic behavioural intervention to establish verbal behaviour and s

Relations between maternal parenting styles and callous-unemotional behavior in Chinese children: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on maternal parenting styles and children's callous-unemotional behavior (CU behavior) have focused on the West, and few studies have examined the longitudinal relationship between maternal parenting styles and CU behavior using Chinese preschoolers as subjects. OBJECTIVE: Through a 1.5-year longitudinal lens, this study probed the relations between maternal parenting styles and CU behavior in the Chinese cultural setting. PARTICIPANTS: Participants were N = 492 Chinese young children (Mage = 52.44 months, SD = 5.00, 48 % girls). METHODS: At Time 1 (T1), mothers

Adolescents Who Are Overweight or Obese Exhibit Weaker Spatial and Verbal Working Memory Compared with Healthy-Weight Peers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies link obesity to neurophysiological changes, however cognitive outcomes in adolescents who are overweight or obese, especially with their eating behavior, require further documentation. [Coprolalic behavior in patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome. Form and functional aspects].

Coprolalia as described by Gilles de la Tourette can take two forms: it either turns around a specific theme and serves as a specific and uniform commentary on the discourse of the patient or of others, or on the patient's situation; it may also take the form of seemingly arbitrary "scatalogical punctuations" the semiotic function of which is not evident. It seems clear that coprolalia is involuntary. The limbic lobe may be involved in episodic scatalogical productions; this structure, as observed by Yakovlev, plays a role in "emotive motility" which is essentially centripetal and automatic. T

Childhood apraxia of speech: children at risk for persistent reading and spelling disorder.

This article discusses written language development in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Children with CAS are at risk for persistent reading and spelling disorder in addition to their spoken communication difficulties. The article highlights four factors that increase the risk of written language disorder in this population: (1) the nature of the speech disorder, (2) the presence of phonological awareness difficulties, (3) genetic risk factors, and (4) the negative impact of early reading difficulty on later written language development. The article suggests that traditional ap

Trauma-informed behavioral supports (TIBS) for inpatient treatment of individuals who experience BPD.

Trauma-Informed Behavioral Supports (TIBS) is a novel treatment approach targeting aggression against self or against others in individuals who experience borderline personality disorder (BPD). It is based on applied behavior analysis and uses a person-centered and trauma-informed framework. People with BPD hospitalized because of concerning behaviors, [aggression to others, verbal aggression (e.g., defined as aggression in the forms of verbal threats, etc.), physical aggression, and self-injury, etc.] may experience exacerbations of such behavior in the hospital. Individuals diagnosed with BP
