[Research progress in imaging of large vestibular aqueduct syndrome].

Large vestibular aqueduct syndrome is one of the common non-syndromic hearing impairment. It is one of the most common inner ear abnormalities that cause hearing loss in children. The main performance is gradual or fluctuant hearing loss, from basic normal to extremely severe. Frequently seen in high frequencies hearing loss. The air-bone conduction gaps present in pure tone audiometry test with low frequencies. There were some inducements of intracranial pressure increases before premorbid. Some patients could be accompanied by vertigo or instability. So far, there was still no effective way t

Sensorineural hearing loss in patients with large vestibular aqueduct.

In examining 181 patients (327 ears) with sensorineural hearing loss of unknown etiology and 25 people (50 ears) with normal hearing by high-resolution computed tomography (CT), the image of the large vestibular aqueduct (VA) was defined as being a visible large aperture (> or = 4 mm), and small distance between vestibule and traceable part of the VA nearest to the vestibule (> or = 1 mm). The large VA was found in 13 patients (23 ears, 7.0%); it was relatively frequent following hypoplastic cochlea (33 ears, 10.1%) in all the inner ear anomalies detected. In patients with large VA, high-frequ

Vestibular impairment in cochlear implanted children presenting enlarged vestibular aqueduct and enlarged endolymphatic sac.

UNLABELLED: Enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) is a common finding in tomodensitometry. When cranial MRI is performed, enlarged endolymphatic sac (EES) can also be found. Profound hearing loss is a common finding in these patients but a few studies have investigated vestibular function after cochlear implantation (CI) in EVA and EES patients. Our main objective was to find out whether in EVA children candidates to CI, a higher endolymphatic sac (ES) volume was predictive for higher rates of postsurgical vestibular complications. METHODS: We retrospectively included EVA children who benefited

Degeneration of vestibular sensory cells caused by ablation of the vestibular aqueduct in the gerbil ear.

The vestibular aqueduct of the gerbil has a unique anatomic feature that makes it possible to selectively obliterate the endolymphatic sac with or without interfering with its venous drainage. In animals in which only the endolymphatic sac was ablated, endolymphatic hydrops was slight in the cochlea and was absent in the vestibular labyrinth. The cochlear and vestibular sensory cells were normal. In animals in which both the endolymphatic duct and the vein were obliterated, hydrops was slight, with the exception of a few cochleas that showed moderate hydrops. The sensory cells of the posterior

Retrospective Review of Midpoint Vestibular Aqueduct Size in the 45° Oblique (Pöschl) Plane and Correlation with Hearing Loss in Patients with Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Vestibular aqueduct measurements in the 45° oblique (Pöschl) plane provide a reliable depiction of the vestibular aqueduct; however, adoption among clinicians attempting to counsel patients has been limited due to the lack of correlation with audiologic measures. This study aimed to determine the correlation between midpoint vestibular aqueduct measurements in the Pöschl plane in patients with an enlarged vestibular aqueduct with repeat audiologic measures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two radiologists independently measured the midpoint vestibular aqueduct diameter in the P

Practical 3DCT imaging of the vestibular aqueduct for Meniere's disease.

CONCLUSION: Radiographic visualization of the vestibular aqueduct (VA) from a lateral inside view was effective in assessing patients with Meniere's disease (MD). There were no VA shapes specific to MD on radiography, except for an obliterated VA. This technique could yield more accurate images and functional assessment of the VA for MD evaluation in a clinically useful and convenient manner, without requiring morphologic measurement. OBJECTIVE: To visualize the detailed images of the VA using three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) and discuss its clinical utility in assessing MD. S

Ménière disease caused by an anomalous vein of the vestibular aqueduct.

The precise cause of Ménière disease remains unclear. Multiple causes have been proposed with most experimental evidence pointing to impaired fluid resorption by the endolymphatic duct and sac as the final common pathway in development of hydrops. We report a unique case of Ménière disease secondary to compression of the endolymphatic duct and sac by an anomalous vein of the vestibular aqueduct. The resulting mechanical obstruction led to excessive accumulation of endolymph with clinical signs of Ménière disease. We review the literature and discuss proposed pathogenesis of disease. The findin

The vestibular aqueduct and endolymphatic sac and duct in endolymphatic hydrops.

The histologic features of the endolymphatic sac and duct in 23 serially sectioned temporal bones with idiopathic or secondary endolymphatic hydrops were blindly compared with 22 randomly selected, normal temporal bones. In idiopathic hydrops, the pars rugosa of the endolymphatic sac extended out of the vestibular aqueduct into the dura in 29% of bones, compared with none of normal bones (P less than .01). In the other 71%, the pars rugosa in the vestibular aqueduct was surrounded by dura more commonly than normal. Functional studies are required to assess the relationship of these findings to

Newborn Hearing Screening Results in Patients with Enlarged Vestibular Aqueduct.

OBJECTIVES: Enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) is the most common anatomic abnormality contributing to permanent hearing loss (HL) in children. Although the association between EVA and HL is well-documented, the pass rate for the newborn hearing screening (NBHS) for patients with EVA-related HL is not. Our objective was to investigate the association between NBHS results and audiologic and clinical outcomes in a large cohort of pediatric patients with EVA. METHODS: This was a retrospective chart review of patients seen in the Boston Children's Hospital (BCH) Department of Otolaryngology and C
