This is a review of the English literature relative to acoustic tumors from 1983 through 1988. In January of 1984, a similar article was published in this journal which reviewed the literature from 1979 through 1982. We have selected what we consider the most important articles from the hundreds that were published on this subject. Many other significant papers are not discussed. The material is presented in 11 categories: diagnosis, histopathology, treatment, hearing preservation, facial nerve preservation and repair, von Recklinghausen's disease and bilateral tumors, nonacoustic cerebellopon

A critical account is given of the orthodox neurosurgical approach to acoustic nerve tumours and alternatives through the petrous bone or tentorium.

The prevalence of syphilis increased for several decades before the mid-1990s in the United States, particularly in the southern states. We report a case of neurosyphilis causing bilateral facial and vestibulocochlear nerve dysfunction in which the diagnosis was not initially suspected based on the patient's demographics and history. The MR imaging features helped to make the diagnosis in this case and to exclude other possible causes of multiple cranial nerve dysfunction in this patient. Hearing loss associated with neurosyphilis is one of the few treatable forms of progressive hearing loss,

OBJECTIVE: This paper reviews the current literature on involvement of the vestibular division of the eighth cranial nerve in peripheral neuropathies. The literature abounds with references to auditory neuropathy, which is frequently related to more generalized neuropathies, but there is a marked paucity of work regarding vestibular neuropathy. A brief overview of neuropathies and the anatomy of the vestibulocochlear nerve provide the background for a review of the literature of vestibular nerve involvement in a range of neuropathies.
DESIGN: A literature search including textbooks, and peer-

BACKGROUND: Cranial neuropathies are a spectrum of disorders associated with dysfunction of one or more of the twelve cranial nerves and the subsequent anatomic structures they innervate.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to review radiographic imaging findings of end-organ aberrations secondary to cranial neuropathies.
METHOD: All articles related to cranial neuropathies were retrieved through the PubMed MEDLINE NCBI database from January 1, 1991 to August 31, 2014. These manuscripts were analyzed for their relation to cranial nerve end-organ disease pathogenesis and radiographic im

Hearing loss is a common side effect of many tumor treatments. However, hearing loss can also occur as a direct result of certain tumors of the nervous system, the most common of which are the vestibular schwannomas (VS). These tumors arise from Schwann cells of the vestibulocochlear nerve and their main cause is the loss of function of NF2, with 95 % of cases being sporadic and 5 % being part of the rare neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2)-related Schwannomatosis. Genetic variations in NF2 do not fully explain the clinical heterogeneity of VS, and interactions between Schwann cells and their micro

The authors describe a rare case of rapidly progressive bilateral hearing loss associated with carcinomatous meningitis secondary to a primary malignant melanoma of the lower limb 6 years previously. Carcinomatous meningitis is a relatively rare diagnosis, with the involvement of the eighth cranial nerve being present in only a small proportion of patients. Diagnosis relies on clinical suspicion (when multiple cranial nerve lesions occur), magnetic resonance imaging, and cerebrospinal fluid cytology.

A 58-year-old man with a history of rheumatoid arthritis and stage IV diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, in complete remission with no evidence of residual disease on positron emission tomography/CT after completing six cycles of rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone chemotherapy, presented with acute onset of dysphagia to solids and liquids. On further evaluation, his dysphagia was attributed to a vagus nerve palsy, and later during his admission, he developed rapidly progressing left facial and vestibulocochlear nerve palsies. Imaging studies displayed pathological

Imaging of the vestibulocochlear nerve has evolved dramatically over the past few decades. The imaging specialist now is involved in the diagnosis of far more diagnostic entities than ever before. With this increased involvement comes the responsibility to increase collective knowledge regarding the pathophysiology of these diagnostic entities. This article is organized in a conventional way and covers congenital deformity of the internal auditory canal, neoplastic and pseudoneoplastic lesions, with special detailed emphasis on schwannoma of the eight cranial nerves (acoustic neuroma), nonneop
