Bridging Gaps in Mental Health Care Access: Evidence From a Nonprofit Telehealth Service for Military Veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Prior research has demonstrated the effectiveness of free, nonprofit mental health treatment programs for U.S. military veterans, but little is known about the characteristics and needs of veterans who use these services. This study aimed to examine demographic and clinical profiles of veterans receiving free tele-mental health care, with a focus on veterans' self-reported access to other treatment options. METHODS: Veterans (N=148) who completed evidence-based mental health treatment were assessed for demographic factors, pre- and posttreatment psychological symptoms, and self-rep

Veterans in Northern Ireland: Evaluation of chronic pain experience, service type, and physical and mental health functioning.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is common and associated with disruptions in quality of life (QoL) and psychosocial functioning. These issues are particularly pronounced in veterans, although data in this regard primarily come from the United States Veterans Affairs System, meaning less is known regarding veterans of other countries and regions. The present study evaluated veterans living in Northern Ireland (NI), a region with historic high rates of both chronic pain and psychosocial difficulties associated with the decades-long period of civil and military conflict preceding the 1999 armistice (the

Health Service Interventions for Intimate Partner Violence among Military Personnel and Veterans: A Framework and Scoping Review.

IPV is a significant concern among active duty (AD) military personnel or veterans, and there is a need for initiatives to address violence perpetrated by such personnel, and IPV victimisation in military and veteran-specific contexts. The aim of this paper was to provide an overview of major IPV intervention approaches and evidence in military and veteran-specific health services. A scoping review was conducted involving a systematic search of all available published studies describing IPV interventions in military and veteran-specific health services. Findings were synthesised narratively, a

Service and Suffering: Comparative Analyses of Health-Related Quality of Life Among Veteran and Civilian Cancer Survivors.

BACKGROUND: Veterans report greater comorbidity and psychosocial burden but have enhanced healthcare access through the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). We sought to characterize health-related quality of life (HRQoL) differences between veteran and civilian cancer survivors. METHODS: We analyzed cancer survivors from the 2017-2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Outcomes included fair/poor general health, poor physical health, poor mental health, and activity-limiting poor health. Sex-stratified, survey-weighted Poisson regression with robust variance estimated incidence rat

Caregiver recruitment and engagement: identifying best practices and strategies for including family caregivers of veterans in health services research.

BACKGROUND: Family caregivers are integral to the care of patients and possess important perspectives regarding improving healthcare delivery. Yet, caregivers are seldom engaged in research in part because of challenges recruiting and retaining them. We sought to identify best practices for recruiting and retaining caregivers in health services research, drawing from researcher experiences in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). METHODS: We identified VA Health Systems Research (HSR) funded studies that focused on caregivers of Veterans by reviewing ongoing and completed projects from 201

Sexual assault, mental health, and service use among male and female veterans seen in Veterans Affairs primary care clinics: a multi-site study.

This study examined the nature and prevalence of sexual assault (SA), as well as its relationship to psychiatric sequelae and service use, among the veteran population. We performed a secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional dataset consisting of 643 male and 173 female veterans seen in four Veterans Affairs (VA) primary care clinics. Original data were obtained through semi-structured clinic assessments, structured telephone interviews, and medical chart reviews. Analyses included descriptive statistics, chi-square, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and logistic regression. The lifetime preva

Nonsuicidal self-injury among veterans is associated with psychosocial impairment, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and underutilization of mental health services.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a robust predictor of suicide attempts. However, understanding of NSSI and associated treatment utilization among Veterans is limited. Although impairment may be assumed, few studies examine the association between NSSI and psychosocial functioning, a core component of the rehabilitation framework of mental health. In a national survey of Veterans, current NSSI (n = 88) was associated with higher rates of suicidal thoughts and behaviors and more severe psychosocial impairment after adjusting for demographics and probable diagnoses of posttraumatic stress disor

Bidirectional associations between probable eating disorders and mental health conditions among military service members and veterans.

Although prior research has examined the prevalence of eating disorders (EDs) such as binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN) among military personnel, less is known regarding temporal associations between EDs and other mental health conditions. Using longitudinal data from 179 694 service members and veterans from the Millennium Cohort Study, temporal associations between EDs (BN and BED) and mental health conditions (posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and problem drinking) were investigated using a cross-lagged panel model approach. Results indicated consistent

Pharmacotherapy for alcohol dependence: perceived treatment barriers and action strategies among Veterans Health Administration service providers.

Although access to and consideration of pharmacological treatments for alcohol dependence are consensus standards of care, receipt of these medications by patients is generally rare and highly variable across treatment settings. The goal of the present project was to survey and interview the clinicians, managers, and pharmacists affiliated with addiction treatment programs within Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities to learn about their perceptions of barriers and facilitators regarding greater and more reliable consideration of pharmacological treatments for alcohol dependence. Interactions between mental health predictors on post-concussive depressive symptoms among service members and veterans with concussion.

PURPOSE: US service members and veterans (SMVs) are at an increased risk for both concussion and mental health disorders such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). Although depression history has been shown associated with elevated post-concussive depressive symptoms, it is unclear whether this relationship changes in the presence of other mental health conditions such as PTSD. This study evaluated whether the relationship between depression history and the level of post-concussive depressive symptoms varied by pre-injury PTSD. METHODS: Data from 427 SMVs with concussion h
