A review of neuroendoscopy and potential applications in veterinary medicine.

The endoscope was first developed over 200 yr ago. Endoscopy has since been applied to many disciplines of medicine. Its application to the nervous system was initially slow and not widely accepted and mainly involved the biopsy of tumors and the treatment of hydrocephalus. Several reasons for neuroendoscopy's limited use include inadequate endoscope technology, high skill level required, the advent of the surgical microscope, and the development of other treatments such as ventricular shunting. Over the past 50 yr, improvements in optical glass lenses, fiber optics, and electrical circuitry h

Use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine and mechanisms of resistance.

This review deals with the application of antimicrobial agents in veterinary medicine and food animal production and the possible consequences arising from the widespread and multipurpose use of antimicrobials. The various mechanisms that bacteria have developed to escape the inhibitory effects of the antimicrobials most frequently used in the veterinary field are reported in detail. Resistance of bacteria to tetracyclines, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin antibiotics, beta-lactam antibiotics, aminoglycosides, sulfonamides, trimethoprim, fluoroquinolones and chloramphenicol/florfenicol is d

[Combined vaccines in veterinary medicine in the developing countries].

It is in the interest of developing countries to have combined vaccines in veterinary medicine, not so much because they reduce production costs, but rather because they increase convenience and efficacy concerning the logistics of prophylactic projects in the field, thus lowering the cost of these projects. Their drawbacks are basically due to the biological compatibility of immunogens (possible immunosuppression by some viruses) and to the interaction of the various components when mixed, or when lyophilization is carried out. Some examples of such associations of vaccines are: (1) cattle pl

Recombinant Antimicrobial Peptides (rAMPs); Potential Applications in Medicine and Veterinary Medicine: A Review.

Antibiotic resistance has become a major public health concern worldwide. Treatment of humans and animals is becoming increasingly challenging due to antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be transmitted from animals to humans by several routes, including direct contact, contaminated food or water, or environmental exposure. Various factors contribute to the rising problem, such as the widespread and indiscriminate exploitation of antimicrobials in both human and animal healthcare, over-prescription, misuse of antibiotics, the role of agriculture in spreading antibiotic resis

2024 Guidelines for reporting radiation therapy in veterinary medicine.

Evidence-based medicine drives patient care decision-making; thus, accurate and complete reporting in scientific publications is paramount. A checklist for complete reporting of veterinary radiation therapy was proposed in 2012 using the recommendations of the International Commission of Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU). The purpose of this study is to review the 2012 checklist and propose updates based on changes in technology. Significant technology advancements have gained traction in veterinary medicine, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and stereotactic radiati

Bayesian Decision Analysis: An Underutilized Tool in Veterinary Medicine.

Bayesian inference and decision analysis can be used to identify the most probable differential diagnosis and use those probabilities to identify the best choice of diagnostic or treatment among several alternatives. In this retrospective case analysis, we surveyed three experts on the prior probability of several differential diagnoses, given the signalment and history of a ferret presenting for lethargy and anorexia, and the conditional probability of different clinical findings (physical, bloodwork, imaging, etc.), given a diagnosis. Using these data and utility estimates provided by other

Review of triazine antiprotozoal drugs used in veterinary medicine.

Triazines are relatively new antiprotozoal drugs that have successfully controlled coccidiosis and equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. These drugs have favorably treated other protozoal diseases such as neosporosis and toxoplasmosis. In this article, we discuss the pharmacological characteristics of five triazines, toltrazuril, ponazuril, clazuril, diclazuril, and nitromezuril which are used in veterinary medicine to control protozoal diseases which include coccidiosis, equine protozoal myeloencephalitis, neosporosis, and toxoplasmosis.

Antiviral chemotherapy in veterinary medicine: current applications and perspectives.

The current situation in the use of antiviral drugs in veterinary medicine is characterised by a novel and optimistic approach.Viruses of veterinary importance are still used as animal models in the developmentof human therapeutics, but there is growing interest in many of these viruses in the identification of antiviral molecules for use in both livestock and companion animals. The use of antiviral drugs in livestock animals is envisaged for the treatment or control of disease on a large scale (mass treatment), whereas in companion animals an individual approach is favoured. An overview of th

Microbiological aspects of osteomyelitis in veterinary medicine: drawing parallels to the infection in human medicine.

Osteomyelitis is a challenging infectious disease affecting humans and animals. It is difficult to diagnose because, in many cases, symptoms are non-specific and, for example in implant-related cases, can appear long time after surgery. In addition to this, it is also difficult to treat due to the need to find the appropriate antibiotic regime and delivery system to reach the site of infection and to avoid development of bacterial resistance. The central purpose of this review is to compare the microbiological aspects of osteomyelitis in human and veterinary medicine, with the aim of improving

Beyond the Needle: Is Liquid Biopsy the Future of Veterinary Medicine?

The detection of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is a minimally invasive approach for diagnosing and monitoring cancer. These liquid biopsy-based strategies enable the identification of primary or metastatic tumors and provide valuable information on tumor biology and treatment response. A variety of techniques are employed to analyze components obtained through liquid biopsy. While CTCs are typically detected using cell-based methods, ctDNA is commonly analyzed using highly sensitive molecular approaches, including quantitative PCR (qPCR), digital PCR (dPCR),

Therapeutic and Formulation Advances of Ivermectin in Veterinary and Human Medicine.

The treatment of parasitic infections has evolved in terms of effectiveness and the prevention of drug resistance. This is highlighted by the discovery of ivermectin (IVM), a macrocyclic lactone and broad-spectrum antiparasitic agent. IVM garnered scientific attention by presenting a therapeutic alternative in the field of veterinary medicine due to its control of multiple parasite species, including nematodes and soil-transmitted helminths. Shortly after its discovery, IVM was approved for human use by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) fo

[Antimicrobial resistance in human and veterinary medicine: where are we?].

WHERE ARE WE ? In both human and veterinary medicine, the evolution of antimicrobial resistance is worrying for some antibiotics or bacterial species, but less for others. In humans and animals, the picture for respiratory infections is rather favorable. On the other hand, resistance to fluoroquinolones of bacteria causing sexually transmitted infections in humans, or of Campylobacter_in animals, has increased significantly. Two major indicators of antimicrobial resistance, common to both sectors, are resistance to 3rd generation cephalosporins in Enterobacterales and resistance to methicillin

A role for GnRH in olfaction and cognition: Implications for veterinary medicine.

Pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is essential for the activation and maintenance of the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, which controls the onset of puberty and fertility. Two provocative recent studies suggest that, in addition to control reproduction, the neurons in the brain that produce GnRH are also involved in the control postnatal brain maturation, odour discrimination and adult cognition. Long-acting GnRH antagonists and agonists are commonly used to control fertility and behaviour in veterinary medicine, primarily in males. This re

Studies on helminthosis at the Centre for Tropical Veterinary Medicine (CTVM).

The research work relating to helminths, which has been conducted within the Helminthology Section of the CTVM, often in collaboration with colleagues from the tropics is reviewed and placed into a historical perspective. The research has, in the main, concentrated on the trematodes Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica and the cestodes Taenia saginata and Taenia solium, but work on other parasites including gastro-intestinal nematodes is also considered. All of these parasites are of obvious veterinary/economic importance particularly in the tropics and subtropics. While the zoonotic impor

Contributions of behavioral primatology to veterinary science and comparative medicine.

Behavioral primatology is a subdiscipline of the research area referred to as primatology. Like primatology, behavioral primatology is an eclectic field of study made up of researchers from diverse basic disciplines having very different historical roots and employing extremely different methodologies biased by emphases and assumptions dictated by their histories. Psychologists, zoologists, anthropologists, and psychiatrists make up the majority of those currently active in behavioral primatology, but others, including those in veterinary science, are active in research in the area. [A survey on the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine (author's transl)].

Many problems about public health are raised by the use of antiinfectious agents in veterinary medicine. Particular attention must be given to the contamination of human food of animal origin and to the exposure of workers manufacturing these drugs. A review of the use of these products in veterinary medicine, particularly that of antibiotics will allow to circumscribe the problems due to drugs which might cause allergy.
