Vibration training: benefits and risks.

The main results of our recent several studies, i.e. the measurements of vibration training results for single case and group studies as well as the cardiovascular parameter measurements during vibrations and the corresponding hydrodynamic analysis, are summarized. Our studies and previous work all confirm that vibration training is an effective training method in order to improve maximal strength and flexibility as well as various other factors if the training is properly designed. Some recommendations regarding the proper ranges of frequencies, amplitudes and exposure duration of vibration t

Health effects of mechanical vibration.

In this study, the health disorders caused by occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) and hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) are reviewed. Long-term occupational exposure to intense WBV is associated with an increased risk for disorders of the lumbar spine and the connected nervous system. With a lower probability, the neck-shoulder, the gastrointestinal system, the female reproductive organs, the peripheral veins, and the cochleo-vestibular system are also assumed to be affected by WBV. However, there is a weak epidemiologic support for WBV-induced disorders of organ systems other t

[Neck vibration: usefulness in neurotology].

INTRODUCTION: Recently, mechanical vibration on the neck has begun to be used to improve diagnostic sensitivity in patients who have vestibular disorders. METHOD: We review results of studies of this stimulus in normal subjects and patients with vestibular lesions: the ocular responses, changes in the subjective straight ahead, and postural changes generated by the neck vibration. CONCLUSION: Although the underlying mechanism for the responses to neck vibration remains uncertain, it is an excellent addition to the neurotologic exam since it allows us demonstrate vestibular deficit with great

Platelet activation during hand vibration.

The level of beta-thromboglobulin, the circulating platelet aggregate ratio and platelet sensitivity to aggregation with adenosine 5'-diphosphate (ADP) and collagen were assessed in 12 control subjects, 16 patients with vibration white finger (VWF) and 15 patients with primary Raynaud's disease; this was done before and after a 1-min exposure to hand vibration. The beta-thromboglobulin level increased significantly in controls, from a median (interquartile range) of 35.5 (22-47) to 47.5 (27-52) ng/ml, and in the VWF group from 44.0 (39-60) to 47.5 (42-109) ng/ml (P < 0.005). Vibration had no e

Heat, cold, noise, and vibration.

Exposure to a cold environment induces a number of physiological alterations, the most serious being hypothermia. This state can occur in all individuals, but the very young and the elderly are more susceptible. Environmental and industrially generated high ambient temperature can place further stress on aged individuals and workers, resulting in a complex symptom picture. Morbidity and death may result from such exposures. Causative factors have been identified. Noise exposure induces hearing losses above those secondary to the aging process. Psychophysiological effects during noise exposure

[Psychoemotional status in vibration disease].

193 patients affected with vibration disease caused by local vibration and 111 healthy people were examined to evaluate their psychoemotional state. A comparative analysis of the data obtained proved high prevalence of pathologic emotional disorders, while somatic manifestations of anxiety against social introversion were mostly predominant among them. A dynamic investigation confirmed both the objectiveness of the disorders in question and expedience of specific approaches to their therapy.

Body height changes from vibration.

A device for measuring body height is reported (SD, 1 mm). The change in body height before and after vibration and quiet sitting respectively was studied in eight men aged 22-44 years who were free of back pain. The vibration frequency was set at 5 Hz and the acceleration at 2 msec-2. Subjects were asked to report for testing within 2 hours after arising from bed. Body height was measured before and immediately after vibration or sitting exposure and the measurements were repeated at different intervals up to 2 hours after the experiment. Results show that exposure to vibration increases the

Good vibrations: Sternal vibration enhances white matter density and interoceptive awareness.

Vibration-based therapies are understudied but promising methods for alleviating psychiatric symptoms, particularly when paired with behavioral practices. The potential neuroplastic changes associated with a novel neurostimulation method, sternal vibration, and associations with clinical change remain unknown. We examined effects of sternal vibration paired with mindfulness meditation on change in white matter microstructure and dissociation using neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) in trauma-exposed adults with elevated dissociative symptoms. [Prognostic assessment and risk of the development of vibration disease due to the effects of general vibration].

The studies revealed that evaluation of actual health disorders in people exposed to vibration requires up-to-date methodology, elaboration of new criteria that justify prophylactic measures. Taking into account a concept of occupational risk, scientists should have new approaches to hygienic regulation of general vibration in connection with load, levels, direction, quota of low-frequency components in total spectrum of mechanical oscillations.

Vibrational circular dichroism measurements of ligand vibrations in haem and non-haem metalloenzymes.

We have measured the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra of the stretching vibrations of azide and cyanide ligated to the Fe3+ atoms of haemoglobin (Hb) and myoglobin (Mb). The antisymmetric azide-stretch of the low-spin haems have an anomalously large g-value of ca. -1 x 10(-3). In contrast, CN- has a g-value of ca. +2.4 x 10(-3). We also show, for the first time, that a significant VCD occurs for the azide ligand antisymmetric stretches of non-haem proteins; we measure a g-value of ca. -1 x 10(-4) for azide bound to haemerythrin. We have examined the mechanism of the VCD phenomenon

A comparison of three vibrators in static posturography: the effect of vibration amplitude on body sway.

In static posturography, proprioception is often disturbed using vibrators applied bilaterally to the calf muscles. The effect of vibrator amplitude on body sway was compared in static posturography using bilateral vibrators on the calf muscles of 30 healthy male military conscripts at frequencies of 50 and 90 Hz. Postural stability was measured in terms of BSV (body sway velocity), and maximal displacements of the centre of force (MAXY, MAXX) in the anterio-posterior and lateral directions. In comparing the effects of vibration to base stance without vibration, BSV seemed to be the most sensi

Effects of whole-body vibration on reproductive physiology in a rat model of whole-body vibration.

Findings from epidemiological studies suggest that occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) may increase the risk of miscarriage and contribute to a reduction in fertility rates in both men and women. However, workers exposed to WBV may also be exposed to other risk factors that contribute to reproductive dysfunction. The goal of this experiment was to examine the effects of WBV on reproductive physiology in a rat model. Male and female rats were exposed to WBV at the resonant frequency of the torso (31.5 Hz, 0.3 g amplitude) for 4 hr/day for 10 days. WBV exposure resulted in a sign

Proposal for hand-arm vibration exposure limits adopted for Japanese workers operating hand-held vibration tools.

On the basis of data presented in our previous, reports, the current study was undertaken to estimate frequency-weighted hand-arm vibration exposure limits for various daily exposure times. The procedures for the present study were as follows. (1) The prevalence of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) as well as the vibration exposure were investigated in various groups of workers operating hand-held vibrating tools. The vibration magnitude of various tools was measured and the results were presented as the energy-equivalent frequency-weighted root-mean-square (m/s2 rms) acceleration. There wa

[Acoustic reflex in workers using hand-held vibration tools. Combined effects of noise and local vibration].

Combined effects of noise and local vibration on the threshold of acoustic reflex (ART) were investigated. ARTs for three different stimuli (ARTWN, ART1k, ART4k) were determined in workers using hand-held vibration tools. The results obtained from these 72 workers (Group A) were compared with the ARTs in 100 control subjects (Group C) who had normal hearing acuity without any history of occupational noise exposure, as previously reported by the authors. The mean age in group A was 46.6 ranging from 26 to 62. The mean period of noise and vibration exposure was 11.4 years in subjects mainly usin

Ride comfort and segmental vibration transmissibility analysis of an automobile passenger model under whole body vibration.

The examination of seated occupants' ride comfort under whole-body vibration is a complex topic that involves multiple factors. Whole-body vibration refers to the mechanical vibration that is transmitted to the entire body through a supporting surface, such as a vehicle seat, when traveling on rough or uneven surfaces. There are several methods to assess ride comfort under whole-body vibration, such as subjective assessments, objective measurements, and mathematical models. Subjective assessments involve asking participants to rate their perceived level of discomfort or satisfaction during the

Effects of Vibration and Non-Vibration Foam Rolling on Recovery after Exercise with Induced Muscle Damage.

We aimed to compare the effects between non-vibration foam rolling (NVFR) and vibration foam rolling (VFR) on visual analogic scale (VAS), pressure pain threshold (PPT), oxygen saturation (SmO2), countermovement jump (CMJ) and hip and knee range of movement (ROM) after eliciting muscle damage through eccentric acute exercise using an inertial flywheel. Thirty-eight healthy volunteers (32 men, 6 women; aged 22.2±3.2 years) were randomly assigned in a counter-balanced fashion to either a VFR or NVFR protocol group. All participants performed a 10x10 (sets x repetitions) eccentric squat protocol

Periodontal tissue activation by vibration: intermittent stimulation by resonance vibration accelerates experimental tooth movement in rats.

INTRODUCTION: Accelerating the speed of orthodontic tooth movement should contribute to the shortening of the treatment period. This would be beneficial because long treatment times are a negative aspect of orthodontic treatment. In this study, we evaluated the effects of mechanical stimulation by resonance vibration on tooth movement, and we showed the cellular and molecular mechanisms of periodontal ligament responses. METHODS: The maxillary first molars of 6-week-old male Wistar rats were moved to the buccal side by using an expansive spring for 21 days (n = 6, control group), and the amou

[Pathogenesis of motor disorders in patients with vibration disease caused by local vibration (clinico-electroneuromyographic study].

The author provides the data on clinical, neurophysiological examinations of 195 patients suffering from vibration disease, stages I and II, due to local vibration. Three types of axonal injuries were established: axonal degeneration, demyelinization of the distal part of axon and demyelinization of its proximal part. All the three types of neural disorders were attended by synaptic alterations with a decrement of the M-response and the syndrome of "working in". The initial manifestations of neurophysiological pathology were axonal degenerative disorders with changes in neuromuscular transmiss
