A 76-year-old man with liver cirrhosis and diabetes mellitus was admitted to our hospital because of bacterial meningoencephalitis. He had eaten raw fish 2 days before onset. He also developed septic shock, disseminated intravascular coagulation, adult respiratory distress syndrome and panophthalmitis of the right eye. Vibrio vulnificus was isolated from the blood culture. Extensive therapy including antibiotics and nafamostat methylate, resulted in full recovery except for right blindness. The necrotizing fasciitis, which is common with Vibrio vulnificus infection, had not been complicated in

Two Gram-stain-negative, facultatively aerobic, oxidase- and catalase-positive, motile (by means of a polar flagellum) rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated BS-M-Sm-2T and MA40-2T, were isolated from marine algae. Growth was optimal at pH 7.0-8.0 and 2.0-3.0% (w/v) NaCl, with temperature optima of 25°C for BS-M-Sm-2T and 25-30°C for MA40-2T. Ubiquinone-8 was the sole respiratory quinone. The major fatty acids common to both strains were C16:0, summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c), and summed feature 8 (C18:1 ω7c and/or C18:1 ω6c), while BS-M-Sm-2T additionally contained C12:0 and C

Vibrio is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria, some of which can cause serious infectious diseases. Vibrio infections are associated with the consumption of contaminated food and classified in Vibrio cholera infections and non-cholera Vibrio infections. In the present study, we investigate whether bovine lactoferrin (bLF) and several synthetic peptides corresponding to bLF sequences, are able to inhibit the growth or have bactericidal effect against V. cholerae and other Vibrio species. The antibacterial activity of LF and LF-peptides was assessed by kinetics of growth or determination of colony

Of the over 100 species in the genus Vibrio, approximately twelve are associated with clinical disease, such as cholera and vibriosis. Crucially, eleven of those twelve, including Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio vulnificus, have been isolated from birds. Since 1965, pathogenic Vibrio species have been consistently isolated from aquatic and ground-foraging bird species, which has implications for public health, as well as the One Health paradigm defined as an ecology-inspired, integrative framework for the study of health and disease, inclusive of environmental, human, and animal health. Vibrio vulnificus infection can result in necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis, which have short latentcy periods and high mortality rates. Thus, an easy and quick detection method is needed to improve the outcome. To distinguish V. vulnificus from other pathogens that cause necrotizing fasciitis, we developed a selective isolation culture agar plate (Chromochecker Vibrio Agar-1; CVA-1) for use in environmental monitoring and in the clinical setting. One hundred four strains of V. vulnificus, already identified biochemically, showed typical colony form and color when grown on CVA-1. Thirty-six of

The authors suggest a well-reproducible method of preparation of a biologically-active fraction of an alkaline extract of cholera vibrio from the strain 569B of Inaba serological type consisting in a preliminary triple removal of endotoxin (O-antigen) of the causative agent from the microbial cell suspension with trichloracetic acid with the subsequent extraction of the microbial mass and neutralization of the extract obtained capable of effective detection of the state of specific sensitization of the organism to cholera vibrio. Preparations of the alkaline extracts (cholera allergen) obtaine

The vast diversity in nucleotide composition and architecture among bacterial genomes may be partly explained by inherent biases in the rates and spectra of spontaneous mutations. Bacterial genomes with multiple chromosomes are relatively unusual but some are relevant to human health, none more so than the causative agent of cholera, Vibrio cholerae Here, we present the genome-wide mutation spectra in wild-type and mismatch repair (MMR) defective backgrounds of two Vibrio species, the low-%GC squid symbiont V. fischeri and the pathogen V. cholerae, collected under conditions that greatly minim

Obtaining a better understanding of mechanisms involved in bacterial infections is of paramount importance for the development of novel agents to control disease caused by (antibiotic resistant) pathogens in aquaculture. In this study, we investigated the impact of catecholamine stress hormones on growth and virulence factor production of pathogenic vibrios (i.e. two Vibrio campbellii strains and two Vibrio anguillarum strains). Both norepinephrine and dopamine (at 100 μM) significantly induced growth in media containing serum. The compounds also increased swimming motility of the tested strai

Protozoan grazing is a major mortality factor faced by bacteria in the environment. Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of the disease cholera, is a natural inhabitant of aquatic ecosystems, and its survival depends on its ability to respond to stresses, such as predation by heterotrophic protists. Previous results show that grazing pressure induces biofilm formation and enhances a smooth to rugose morphotypic shift, due to increased expression of Vibrio polysaccharide (VPS). In addition to negatively controlling vps genes, the global quorum sensing (QS) regulator, HapR, plays a role in grazi

BACKGROUND: Vibrio species are a rare cause of necrotizing soft-tissue infections and primary septicemia, which are likely to occur in patients with hepatic disease, diabetes, adrenal insufficiency, and immunocompromised conditions. These organisms thrive in warm seawater and are often present in raw oysters, shellfish, and other seafood. This study examined fulminating clinical characteristics of Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio cholerae non-O1 soft-tissue infections and identified outcome predictors.
MATERIALS: Thirty patients with necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis caused by Vibrio species were

The seventh pandemic of the diarrheal cholera disease, which began in 1960, is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Its environmental persistence provoking recurring sudden outbreaks is enabled by V. cholerae's rapid adaption to changing environments involving sensory proteins like ToxR and ToxS. Located at the inner membrane, ToxR and ToxS react to environmental stimuli like bile acid, thereby inducing survival strategies for example bile resistance and virulence regulation. The presented crystal structure of the sensory domains of ToxR and ToxS in combination with multiple

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a Gram-negative halophilic bacterium that is mainly distributed in the seafood such as fish, shrimps and shellfish throughout the world. V. parahaemolyticus can cause diseases in marine aquaculture, leading to huge economic losses to the aquaculture industry. More importantly, it is also the leading cause of seafood-borne diarrheal disease in humans worldwide. With the development of animal model, next-generation sequencing as well as biochemical and cell biological technologies, deeper understanding of the virulence factors and pathogenic mechanisms of V. parahaemol

To cause the diarrheal disease cholera, Vibrio cholerae must effectively colonize the small intestine. In order to do so, the bacterium needs to successfully travel through the stomach and withstand the presence of agents such as bile and antimicrobial peptides in the intestinal lumen and mucus. The bacterial cells penetrate the viscous mucus layer covering the epithelium and attach and proliferate on its surface. In this review, we discuss recent developments and known aspects of the early stages of V. cholerae intestinal colonization and highlight areas that remain to be fully understood. We

Vibrio fluvialis is a pathogen commonly found in coastal environs. Considering recent increase in numbers of diarrheal outbreaks and sporadic extraintestinal cases, V. fluvialis has been considered as an emerging pathogen. Though this pathogen can be easily isolated by existing culture methods, its identification is still a challenging problem due to close phenotypic resemblance either with Vibrio cholerae or Aeromonas spp. However, using molecular tools, it is easy to identify V. fluvialis from clinical and different environmental samples. Many putative virulence factors have been reported, b

As the causative agent of cholera, the bacterium Vibrio cholerae represents an enormous public health burden, especially in developing countries around the world. Cholera is a self-limiting illness; however, antibiotics are commonly administered as part of the treatment regimen. Here we review the initial identification and subsequent evolution of antibiotic-resistant strains of V. cholerae. Antibiotic resistance mechanisms, including efflux pumps, spontaneous chromosomal mutation, conjugative plasmids, SXT elements and integrons, are also discussed. Numerous multidrug-resistant strains of V.

There are several reports of persons with hemochromatosis and Vibrio vulnificus primary septicemia, but few accounts of persons with hemochromatosis and V. vulnificus wound infection. A 58-year-old white man developed infection of a forearm injury exposed to seawater in the Gulf of Mexico near the Alabama coast. At age 66, he was diagnosed to have hemochromatosis. Transferrin saturation was 89% and serum ferritin was 4761 pmol/L. HFE genotype was C282Y/C282Y. Serum levels of hepatic enzymes, glucose, IgG, IgA, and IgM, and blood levels of T, B, and natural killer cells were normal. We identifi
