Aeromonas hydrophila Sepsis Mimicking Vibrio vulnificus Infection.

Aeromonas hydrophila is a facultatively anaerobic, asporogenous gram-negative rod that has often been regarded as an opportunistic pathogen in hosts with impairment of a local or general defense mechanism. A 68-year-old alcoholic woman presented with shock and gangrene on the right arm. At first, her clinical presentations were severe painful erythematous swelling that worsened within a few hours with development of gangrene, edema, and blisters. Bullous fluid and blood cultures yielded A. hydrophila. Histopathological findings of sections obtained from the vesicle revealed subepidermal vesicl

Concomitant intestinal parasitism and non-cholera vibrio infection.

Concomitant parasitism is not uncommon especially in tropical countries with low socioeconomic status. Here we report an unusual combination of intestinal infection due to Strongyloides stercoralis, Blastomyces hominis and non-cholera Vibrio in a patient suffering from acute gastroenteritis and hypoalbuminemia. Early recognition and accurate treatment of gastrointestinal infections and infestations before the patient develops complications is important.

Visualisation of zebrafish infection by GFP-labelled Vibrio anguillarum.

Vibrio anguillarum is an invasive pathogen of fish causing a septicaemia called vibriosis. In this work, transparent zebrafish were immersed in water containing green fluorescent protein labelled V. anguillarum. The infection was visualised at the whole fish and single bacterium levels using microscopy. The gastrointestinal tract was the first site where the pathogen was detected. This enteric localisation occurred independently of the flagellum or motility. On the other hand, chemotactic motility was essential for association of the pathogen with the fish surface. In conclusion, the zebrafish

Edema and hemoconcentration in mice experimentally infected with Vibrio vulnificus.

Vibrio vulnificus (lactose-positive Vibrio), a recently recognized pathogenic marine species, produced extreme hemoconcentration and death within 3 to 6 h after subcutaneous or intraperitoneal injection of 10(8) viable cells into mice; hemotocrit values approached 70% (normal, 45%). About 1 ml of edema fluid accumulated at the site of each subcutaneous injection, and locally increased vascular permeability was demonstrated by a skin bluing assay, using Evans blue dye. A corresponding fluid accumulation did not occur in the peritoneal cavity after an intraperitoneal injection. Filter-sterilized

Infant Mouse Model of Vibrio cholerae Infection and Colonization.

Cholera is an epidemic diarrheal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae that continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world. Several different animal models have been used by scientists over the years to study the pathogenesis of cholera. However, the most commonly used is the infant (suckling) mouse model, which has been found to replicate important aspects of human intestinal colonization. Here we present a detailed protocol for using the infant mouse model to assess the colonization of V. cholerae strains using a competition assay.

The first fatal case of Vibrio vulnificus infection in Denmark.

Vibrio vulnificus can cause severe infections in humans and persons with preexisting liver disorders are especially at risk. In this paper we report what is to our knowledge the first fatal case of V. vulnificus infection in Denmark. The patient was a 68-year-old man with a history of chronic lymphatic leukemia and hepatic cirrhosis. Physicians should be aware of the clinical manifestations of this disease and should be especially attentive to patients at risk of acquiring the infection if there has been possible exposure to V. vulnificus by contact with seawater or contaminated material such

Necrotizing soft-tissue infections caused by marine vibrios.

Halophilic, noncholera marine Vibrio bacteria can cause septicemia, gastroenteritis, cellulitis, and necrotizing fasciitis. We describe six patients with necrotizing fasciitis and review 12 cases described previously. The 18 patients included 14 men and four women. Their ages ranged from 32 to 79 years (average 58.1 years). Eleven patients were older than 55 years. Nine infections were caused by V. vulnificus, three by V. parahaemolyticus, and one by V. alginolyticus. In five cases the Vibrio species was not identified. Twelve patients had associated conditions that might have made them more s

Hand infections caused by delayed inoculation of Vibrio vulnificus: does human skin serve as a potential reservoir of vibrios?

Vibrio vulnificus may cause severe soft tissue infections of the upper extremity. This pathogen usually gains access to soft tissues either by direct inoculation through a penetrating injury by an infected marine animal or by exposing abraded skin to contaminated water. We report five patients with Vibrio vulnificus hand infections following superficial hand injuries incurred within 24 hours after uneventful handling of fish. This clinical observation, together with the fact that the physiologic characteristics of human sweat simulate the natural environment of the Vibrio vulnificus, support t

Bak and Bax are crucial for Gbp2-mediated pyroptosis during Vibrio and Salmonella infections.

Pyroptosis a lytic form of programmed cell death, is a crucial host defense mechanism against bacterial pathogens. While caspase-mediated pathways are central to pyroptosis, the involvement of apoptotic regulators such as Bak, Bax, and MCL-1 in bacterial infection-induced pyroptosis remains unclear. Here, we investigated how these BCL-2 family proteins modulate pyroptosis induced by Vibrio vulnificus and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium in murine cells. In mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs), both pathogens strongly induced Gbp2 expression and activated caspase‑11, whereas activation of

Outcomes of infections of sea anemone Aiptasia pallida with Vibrio spp. pathogenic to corals.

Incidents of coral disease are on the rise. However, in the absence of a surrogate animal host, understanding of the interactions between coral pathogens and their hosts remains relatively limited, compared to other pathosystems of similar global importance. A tropical sea anemone, Aiptasia pallida, has been investigated as a surrogate model to study certain aspects of coral biology. Therefore, to test whether the utility of this surrogate model can be extended to study coral diseases, in the present study, we tested its susceptibility to common coral pathogens (Vibrio coralliilyticus and Vibr

Infections due to non-O1 Vibrio cholerae in southern Taiwan: predominance in cirrhotic patients.

Although Taiwan is not an area where cholera is endemic, from October 1988 to October 1997 30 episodes of non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae infection were noted at the National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Taiwan. Infections generally occurred in hot seasons, and two episodes were concomitant with Vibrio vulnificus infection. Three major clinical presentations were found: bacteremia with concurrent spontaneous bacterial peritonitis or invasive soft-tissue infections that occurred solely in cirrhotic patients; self-limited acute febrile gastroenteritis that occurred in patients with no unde

[Expert consensus on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of Vibrio vulnificus infection].

Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) is a marine bacterium that can cause sepsis, characterized by rapid progression of infection and high clinical mortality rates. However, many healthcare workers lack systematic understanding of V. vulnificus infections and practical experience in the prevention and control of V. vulnificus infection. Therefore, joining with multidisciplinary experts, the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association established a special working group to formulate this consensus, aiming to provide guidance and reference for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of V. vulnificus in

Transcriptome analysis of Fenneropenaeus merguiensis in response to Vibrio proteolyticus infection.

In recent years, due to the destruction of the culture environment and serious ecological pressure, especially in the process of culture, residual bait, faeces and fishery drug abuse will lead to the accumulation of harmful metabolites such as ammonia nitrogen and nitrite, and biological denitrification is the most economical and effective method to remove the single. Therefore, in this study, a nitrite removal strain XA19 was isolated and screened from a shrimp biofloc culture pond. This strain was identified as a clade of Vibrio proteolyticus because the homology between XA19 and V. proteoly

Vibrio cholerae Outer Membrane Vesicles Inhibit Bacteriophage Infection.

Novel preventatives could help in efforts to limit Vibrio cholerae infection and the spread of cholera. Bacteriophage (phage) treatment has been proposed as an alternative intervention, given the rapid replication of virulent phages, prey specificity, and relative ease of finding new virulent phages. Phage tropism is dictated in part by the presence of phage receptors on the bacterial surface. While many phages that can kill V. cholerae have been isolated, whether this pathogen is able to defend itself by neutralizing phage binding is unknown. Here, we show that secreted outer membrane vesicle

[A Case of Vibrio vulnificus Infection Improved with Conservative Treatment in Kagoshima].

We herein report on a case of Vibrio vulnificus infection that was improved by conservative treatment in Kagoshima, Japan. A 75-year-old Japanese woman with liver cirrhosis presented to our hospital with shaking chill and right lower leg pain. Her blood culture was positive for V. vulnificus, and bullae had newly appeared on the right leg. Further history taking revealed that she had eaten some raw seafood before admission. She recovered following administration of antibiotics and small incisions in the lesion. West Japan (especially, the northern parts of Kyushu island) is well known as an en

Seasonality, clinical types and prognostic factors of Vibrio vulnificus infection.

INTRODUCTION: Vibrio vulnificus infection, an uncommon but life-threatening illness, manifests as two main types, primary septicemia and primary wound infections.  Little information regarding the seasonality of V. vulnificus infections in tropical areas and prognostic factors of primary V. vulnificus wound infections is available. METHODOLOGY: This retrospective study was conducted to include 159 V. vulnificus-infected admissions at our institution in southern Taiwan, 63 with primary septicemia (Group 1) and 96 with primary wound infections (Group 2), from 1999 to 2008, for analysis.
