A few days after a mild trauma to a toe, a 90-year-old woman presented with fever, malaise and cellulitis. On suspicion of erysipelas the patient was initially treated with benzylpenicillin and cefuroxime. Her general condition improved rapidly, but there was local progression with numerous necrotic areas with surrounding bullae. Vibrio vulnificus was isolated from the blood. After susceptibility testing, the patient was finally treated with ciprofloxacin and pivampicillin, and recovered slowly. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of bacteremia with V. vulnificus in Sweden.

Vibrio vulnificus (lactose-positive Vibrio), a recently recognized pathogenic marine species, produced extreme hemoconcentration and death within 3 to 6 h after subcutaneous or intraperitoneal injection of 10(8) viable cells into mice; hemotocrit values approached 70% (normal, 45%). About 1 ml of edema fluid accumulated at the site of each subcutaneous injection, and locally increased vascular permeability was demonstrated by a skin bluing assay, using Evans blue dye. A corresponding fluid accumulation did not occur in the peritoneal cavity after an intraperitoneal injection. Filter-sterilized

Rapid and accurate detection of Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus is important for seafood safety and foodborne infection control. In this study, we developed a detection platform that combines loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) with Pyrococcus furiosus Argonaute (PfAgo)-mediated sequence-specific cleavage. The LAMP rapidly amplified pathogen-specific target sequences under isothermal conditions, while PfAgo provides an additional layer of sequence verification through a programmable guide DNA-directed cleavage step to reduce false-positive signals caused by nonspecific amp

BACKGROUND: Recent advancements in artificial intelligence have led to increased adoption of machine learning in disease identification, particularly for challenging diagnoses like necrotizing fasciitis and Vibrio vulnificus infections. This shift is driven by the technology's efficiency, objectivity, and accuracy, offering potential solutions to longstanding diagnostic hurdles in clinical practice.
METHODS: This investigation incorporated 180 inpatients suffering from soft tissue infections. The participants were categorized into groups: cellulitis, non-Vibrio necrotizing fasciitis (NF), or

Vibrio vulnificus is a pathogenic marine bacteria associated with high mortality. Changes in climate and the global seafood trade have increased the prevalence of marine and freshwater systems affected by V. vulnificus. As a result, the incidence of land animals, plants, and insects contacting V. vulnificus and acting as disease vectors is on the rise. We report the case of a 53-year-old male who was infected with V. vulnificus as the result of a bee sting. The patient had no history of contact with the sea or fresh water or aquatic organisms or products. Due to bacterial pathogenicity and the

Vibrio vulnificus is a motile, gram-negative, halophilic, aquatic bacterium that is part of the normal estuarine microbiome and typically is found in warm coastal waters. Infection with the pathogen typically is due to consumption of contaminated seafood or exposure to contaminated seawater. Vibrio vulnificus has a mortality rate of almost 33% in the United States and is responsible for more than 95% of seafood-related deaths in the United States. Vibrio vulnificus can cause a vast spectrum of diseases, such as gastroenteritis, cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, and sepsis. Gastroenteritis is

We present a case of a 40-year-old man with decompensated alcoholic liver cirrhosis presenting with atraumatic cellulitis of one extremity and severe sepsis that rapidly progressed to compartment syndrome despite broad-spectrum antibiotics. Local cultures following debridement revealed Vibrio vulnificus, and subsequent history revealed consumption of raw oysters 48 h before presentation. Our case points out the unique susceptibility of those with cirrhosis and elevated iron saturation to Vibrio septicaemia, as well as the rapidity and severity of the disease progression.

Infections caused by Vibrio vulnificus were first reported in 1979 by Blake et al. of the US Centers for Disease Control. At that time described as a 'rare, unnamed halophilic lactose-fermenting Vibrio species', V. vulnificus has emerged as the most virulent foodborne pathogen in the United States with a hospitalization rate of 0.910 and a case-fatality rate of 0.390. It is in addition a significant cause of potentially life-threatening wound infections. Infections following ingestion of raw or undercooked seafood, commonly raw oysters, can lead to a primary septicaemia with a fatality rate of

BACKGROUND: Vibrio vulnificus, a gram-negative bacterium, commonly infects humans via contaminated seafood or wounds and can cause severe sepsis. The multifunctional autoprocessing repeat-in-toxin (MARTX) is one of the most crucial virulence factors in V. vulnificus, associated with host pathogenesis. V. vulnificus MARTX induces serious cell damage, leading to subsequent cell death. However, the specific modalities of cell death are diverse and not fully understood.
METHODS: Murine macrophage cells were challenged with V. vulnificus wild-type and ΔrtxA1 strains. Necroptotic events were assess

We report the first case of Vibrio vulnificus sepsis in a patient with vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic (VEXAS) syndrome. A 76-year-old man was diagnosed with VEXAS and myelodysplastic syndromes. He was treated with tocilizumab, oral prednisolone, and regular blood transfusions. The patient presented with fever, chills, and vomiting and was subsequently diagnosed with sepsis. A blood culture confirmed V. vulnificus infection, which resolved after tazobactam/piperacillin treatment. V. vulnificus infections can be facilitated by iron overload resulting from frequent blood

Vibrio vulnificus is an opportunistic gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria found in warm, low salinity waters. Transmission through open wounds or consumption of contaminated seafood can lead to wound infections, sepsis, and potentially death. A 44-year-old man with a history of poly-substance abuse, cirrhosis, and recent oyster consumption presented to the emergency department in June with acute onset bilateral leg pain associated with rash and fever. Within 6 hours of his arrival, the rash rapidly progressed to large bullae with extensive necrosis ascending to the level of the abdomen, and he d

INTRODUCTION: Vibrio vulnificus infection, an uncommon but life-threatening illness, manifests as two main types, primary septicemia and primary wound infections. Little information regarding the seasonality of V. vulnificus infections in tropical areas and prognostic factors of primary V. vulnificus wound infections is available.
METHODOLOGY: This retrospective study was conducted to include 159 V. vulnificus-infected admissions at our institution in southern Taiwan, 63 with primary septicemia (Group 1) and 96 with primary wound infections (Group 2), from 1999 to 2008, for analysis.

PURPOSE: To describe a corneal ulcer due to Vibrio vulnificus that resolved rapidly with antibiotic therapy alone.
METHOD: Case report and review of literature.
RESULTS: This is the third reported case of corneal ulcer due to V. vulnificus. All followed trauma sustained during oyster shucking. Both prior cases required invasive therapy to achieve a cure. Our case responded rapidly to hourly treatment with ciprofloxacin, Neosporin, and fortified vancomycin.
CONCLUSION: V. vulnificus is a virulent pathogen that can infect the cornea after shellfish injury to the eye. Clinical suspicion and ea

Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) infection has recently been drawing attention as a high mortality disease especially in a patient with the preexisting chronic liver disease. The illness caused by V. vulnificus is divided into three groups such as primary septicemia, wound infection and gastrointestinal illness. Primary septicemia, which is the most common in Japan, is defined as a systemic illness presenting fever or hypotension with recovery of V. vulnificus from blood or tissue without the apparent primary focus of infection. We diagnosed four cases as infectious diseases of V. vulnificus

Vibrio vulnificus is a halophilic gram-negative bacillus that can cause fulminant septicaemia in immunocompromised patients. A 67-year-old man who was immunosuppressed as a result of cytotoxic chemotherapy presented with a brief history of fever, lethargy, myalgia, and reduced oral intake. He had recently travelled to the beach to consume seafood. His blood pressure was 81/47 mm Hg, necessitating fluid resuscitation followed by inotropic support and admission to the intensive care unit. His blood culture was positive for curved gram-negative bacilli. The isolate was oxidase-positive and produc

Vibrio vulnificus infection can result in necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis, which have short latentcy periods and high mortality rates. Thus, an easy and quick detection method is needed to improve the outcome. To distinguish V. vulnificus from other pathogens that cause necrotizing fasciitis, we developed a selective isolation culture agar plate (Chromochecker Vibrio Agar-1; CVA-1) for use in environmental monitoring and in the clinical setting. One hundred four strains of V. vulnificus, already identified biochemically, showed typical colony form and color when grown on CVA-1. Thirty-six of

Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) is a marine bacterium that can cause sepsis, characterized by rapid progression of infection and high clinical mortality rates. However, many healthcare workers lack systematic understanding of V. vulnificus infections and practical experience in the prevention and control of V. vulnificus infection. Therefore, joining with multidisciplinary experts, the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association established a special working group to formulate this consensus, aiming to provide guidance and reference for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of V. vulnificus in
