Stroke remains a significant risk of carotid revascularization for atherosclerotic disease. Emboli generated at the time of treatment either using endarterectomy or stent-angioplasty may progress with blood flow and lodge in brain arteries. Recently, the use of protection devices to trap emboli created at the time of revascularization has helped to establish a role for stent-supported angioplasty compared with endarterectomy. Several devices have been developed to reduce or detect emboli that may be dislodged during carotid artery stenting to treat carotid artery stenosis. A significant challe

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to prospectively analyze the sensitivity and specificity of routine electroencephalography with concurrent video recording (vEEG) in relation to the reasons for requesting the test and to investigate when routine vEEG should be requested.
METHODS: We prospectively analyzed 1,080 consecutive vEEGs performed between April 2015 and April 2016. The requests for vEEG were classified as requests with a low suspicion of epilepsy (syncope, confusion or delirium, suspicion of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures, and paroxysmal focal neurological deficit) or requests wi

The brain, body, and behavior dataset (BBBD) provides multimodal recordings from 178 participants across five experiments in which short educational videos were viewed. The dataset contains about 110 hours of electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration, pupil size, gaze position, saccades, blinks, fixations, and head-motion signals, all time-aligned to the video and standardized in the Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) format. Participants watched three to six videos (mean = 28 ± 5 min) under conditions that manipulated attention (attentive versus

PURPOSE: Sound pressure level (SPL) and fundamental frequency (fo) are very basic and important measures in the acoustical assessment of voice quality, and their variation influences also the vocal fold vibration characteristics. Most sophisticated laryngeal videostroboscopic systems therefore also measure and display the SPL and fo values directly over the video frames by means of a rather expensive special hardware setup. An alternative simple software-based method is presented here to obtain these measures as video subtitles.
METHOD: The software extracts acoustic data from the video recor

The validity of the 'Portable Ergonomic Observation' method (PEO) was investigated against posture measurements based on continuous optoelectronic and video recordings made simultaneously with the observation. Work postures and actions during different frequently changing tasks were analyzed using both methods. In general, a high agreement between measured and observed data was achieved for the duration of clearly identifiable sustained postures and actions (such as repetitive movements of hands when typing), as well as for the frequency of clearly distinguishable actions (such as lifts). The

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Appropriate oral health assessment and management can improve the oral health and nutritional status of hospitalized patients. The active participation of dental professionals in the nutritional support team (NST) can help achieve this outcome. However, the participation of dental professionals in NSTs is often limited, indicating the requirement for establishing a remote oral health assessment method. This study aimed to establish a multidisciplinary oral health assessment system using short video recordings with a tablet device.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty inpatients re

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects approximately 5−7% of school-age children. ADHD is usually marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention or hyperactivity−impulsivity, leading to functioning or developmental problems. A common ADHD assessment tool is the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham (SNAP) questionnaire. However, such scales provide only a subjective perspective, and most of them are used to evaluate therapeutic effects at least 3−12 months after medication initiation. Therefore, we employed an objective assessment method to provide more accurate evaluations of therapeutic e

1. In this paper we describe properties of a video imaging system used to acquire voltage-sensitive dye fluorescence signals from the salamander olfactory bulb. Sources of noise in these signals were evaluated in preparations stained with the potentiometric probe RH-414. These were compared with noise levels in signals obtained from a light-emitting diode array designed to stimulate the experimental conditions with light levels similar to those seen in the salamander bulb recordings. These experiments define a number of determinants of video image quality to standardize optical voltage measure

Itching tends to worsen at night in patients with itchy skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis. Unconscious scratching during sleep can exacerbate symptoms, cause sleep disturbances, or reduce quality of life. Therefore, evaluating nocturnal scratching behaviour is important for better patient care. However, no report exists on the specific detection of overnight scratching behaviour of patients with atopic dermatitis using a non-wearable sensor. A novel algorithm was developed to specifically detect scratching behaviour using a non-wearable sheet-shaped body vibrometer placed under the matt

Background Fixed-camera video recordings of neonatal resuscitation have been utilized to facilitate post-event debriefing and evaluate guideline adherence. Traditional video capture is limited in the field of view it provides, requiring multiple cameras to capture the relevant steps of the resuscitation. Objective We sought to examine the feasibility of a 360° video camera (360V) (Gear 360, Samsung, Vietnam) compared to a traditional two-view standard video camera (SVC) (SimView Mobile Camera, Laerdal Medical, New York) as a method for recording neonatal resuscitation and capturing salient res

Dynamic optical imaging of retinal hemodynamics is a rapidly evolving technique in vision and eye-disease research. Video-recording, which may be readily accessible and affordable, captures several distinct functional phenomena such as the spontaneous venous pulsations (SVP) of central vein or local arterial blood supply etc. These phenomena display specific dynamic patterns that have been detected using manual or semi-automated methods. We propose a pioneering concept in retina video-imaging using blind source separation (BSS) serving as an automated localizer of distinct areas with temporall

Previous research has suggested that the peaks in the first derivative (dEGG) of the electroglottographic (EGG) signal are good approximate indicators of the events of glottal opening and closing. These findings were based on high-speed video (HSV) recordings with frame rates 10 times lower than the sampling frequencies of the corresponding EGG data. The present study attempts to corroborate these previous findings, utilizing super-HSV recordings. The HSV and EGG recordings (sampled at 27 and 44 kHz, respectively) of an excised canine larynx phonation were synchronized by an external TTL signa

The study aimed to evaluate the development of awakenings during preterm and term age in 12 low-risk infants observed between 33 and 40 weeks of post-conceptional age. Waking was been detected through the analysis of body motility. Gross generalized body movements with prolonged startles, marked stretching and writhing was considered as waking, whereas vigorous, forceful abrupt body movements with high frequency tremor sometimes superimposed upon movements were considered as corresponding to crying. Total number of awakenings in the 24 h does not show significant changes with age, whereas the
