Prehospital Workplace Violence (WPV) Dispatch Alerts: Anticipating Behavior and Preventing Violence.

OBJECTIVES: Within our emergency medical services (EMS) agency, workplace violence (WPV) is captured through a documentation feature in the electronic medical record. Leveraging this data, we implemented WPV dispatch alerts for addresses where physical violence occurred. Our primary objective was to assess the association of these alerts on the rate of WPV against EMS clinicians. METHODS: This observational cohort study took place 11/20/2022-11/20/2024 at a hospital-affiliated EMS agency with 23,300 average annual ground calls for service. Alerts were implemented on 12/26/2023 and consisted o

Male Adolescents' Gender Attitudes and Violence: Implications for Youth Violence Prevention.

INTRODUCTION: This study analyzed the associations among male adolescents' gender attitudes, intentions to intervene, witnessing peers' abusive behaviors, and multiple forms of adolescent violence perpetration. This community-based evaluation aims to inform future youth violence prevention efforts through the identification of potential predictors of interpersonal violence perpetration. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were from baseline surveys conducted with 866 male adolescents, aged 13-19 years, from community settings in 20 lower-resource neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, PA (August 2015 - June

Sexual and Gender Minority Intimate Partner Violence and Childhood Violence Exposure.

Limited research on female-assigned-at-birth sexual and gender minorities (FAB SGM) suggests that their risk of psychological, physical, and sexual intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and perpetration may be linked to childhood violence exposure (CVE), such as experiencing child abuse, or witnessing sibling or interparental abuse. That said, there is a dearth of research in this population examining whether there is typically a violence type match between CVE and IPV (e.g., physical CVE predicting physical IPV), a gender match between those involved in CVE and later IPV (e.g., witnes

Gender differences in violence exposure and violence risk among adolescent inpatients.

Gender-specific rates of violence exposure and violence perpetration among psychiatrically ill adolescents has received little scientific attention. We examined 130 adolescent inpatients and found no difference between male and female subjects with respect to self-reported violence potential or actual violence perpetration. Female inpatients, however, were significantly more often victims of sexual assault, and male inpatients were significantly more often victims of physical assault. For male inpatients, a history of violence perpetration in one area was closely linked with a history of viole

Cycles of Violence Among Young Women in Namibia: Exploring the Links Between Childhood Violence and Adult Intimate Partner Violence From the Violence Against Children and Youth Survey.

Background: Violence against children is a global public health crisis and is associated with poor mental and physical health outcomes. Childhood violence may also increase the risk of subsequent violence revictimization by an intimate partner. We aimed to understand cycles of violence among adolescent girls and young women in Namibia to inform violence prevention and treatment interventions. Methods: The 2019 Namibia Violence Against Children and Youth Survey (VACS) examined the prevalence of childhood violence and intimate partner violence among 18-24 year old adolescent girls and young wome

Intimate partner violence perpetration by court-ordered men: distinctions and intersections among physical violence, sexual violence, psychological abuse, and stalking.

This study assessed the construct validity of two different measurement models of male partners' perpetration of physical violence, sexual violence, psychological abuse, and stalking against intimate partners. Data were obtained from a sample of 340 men arrested for physical assault of a female spouse or partner and court ordered into batterer intervention programs. Men were surveyed before starting the intervention. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to compare the construct validity of a four-factor measurement model of intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration to a three-factor

Intimate partner violence perpetration by court-ordered men: distinctions among subtypes of physical violence, sexual violence, psychological abuse, and stalking.

This study continues previous work documenting the structure of violence perpetrated by males against their female intimate partners. It assesses the construct validity of a measurement model depicting associations among eight subtypes of perpetration: moderate physical violence, severe physical violence, forced or coerced sexual violence, sexual violence where consent was not possible, emotional/verbal psychological abuse, dominance/isolation psychological abuse, interactional contacts/surveillance related stalking, and stalking involving mediated contacts. Data were obtained from a sample of

The second violence: Police responses to family violence as a public health exposure.

OBJECTIVES: This paper contributes to a broader survivor-led program of research on second violence: the institutional reproduction of harm through systems formally designed to respond to violence. Within that broader program, the paper focuses on one police station encounter to examine how police contact can operate as a modifiable public health exposure in family and domestic violence response. STUDY DESIGN: Survivor-led autoethnographic case study. METHODS: Data were drawn from The Second Violence, a four-year, ethics-approved autoethnographic study documenting lived experience of navigat

Past political violence and interpersonal violence against children and youth in Africa.

Political violence (the use of force by groups for political motives) adversely affects children and youth, but there is limited rigorous evidence on whether exposure to political violence is associated with a higher risk of subsequent interpersonal violence against adolescents and young adults. We estimate this association with multi-country micro data from nine African countries, merging nationally representative Violence Against Children and Youth Survey (VACS) data with Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED) for Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda, Za

Chronicity of Violence Foretold: Toward an Integrated Theory of Intimate Partner Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a worldwide social problem. The current study explores underlining mechanisms of phenomenon by tying together intergenerational transmission theory, socialization theory, and trauma theory. It learns from men how the father figure shaped by their childhood experiences has contributed to their violence, how the father's socialization to manhood has affected their intimate relations, and how they understand the effect of being exposed to the father's violence on their own intimate relationships and violence. Interviews with 25 Israeli men were analyzed thematic

Exposure to violence, typology, and recidivism in a probation sample of domestic violence perpetrators.

The present study investigated the predictive utility of self-reported domestic violence perpetrators' exposure to violence in their family of origin and patterns related to this exposure through the use of longitudinal analyses on a sample of 228 men on probation in Lake County, Illinois. Differences in typology, recidivism, recidivism frequency, and violent behavior survival patterns in men with a history of domestic violence perpetration and with varying levels of family of origin violence exposure were examined. Findings suggest that those who witnessed interparental violence (either alone

Violence against children: an analysis of mandatory reporting of violence, Brazil 2011.

This article aims to describe and analyze reporting of violence against children from 0 to 9 years of age, issued by the public health services, in Brazil. Data from the Violence and Accident Surveillance System (Viva-SINAN) were used. The frequency of selected variables was calculated by age group (0-1; 2-5 and 6-9 years of age) as well as their Prevalence Ratios (PR). 17.900 cases were reported: 33% in the 0-1 year group; 35,8% in the 2-5 year group; and 31,2% in the 6-9 year group. Physical violence predominated among boys (PR: 1.22; CI 95%: 1,16-1,28 ); 6-9 years old (PR: 1,19; CI 95%: 1,1

Coping and violence exposure as predictors of psychological functioning in domestic violence survivors.

This study examines the differential effects of adult and childhood physical and psychological abuse, abuse-specific coping, and psychological adjustment in battered women seeking emergency shelter. Multivariate regression analyses confirmed the devastating impact of psychological abuse (childhood and concurrent) on battered women's adjustment. The results corroborated prior research suggesting a cumulative vulnerability to psychological victimization in a substantial proportion of residents. Unexpectedly, frequency of physical violence was unrelated to women's distress. The study argues that

A survey on violence education: a report of the STFM Violence Education Task Force.

A national survey of all family practice residency directors was undertaken to assess programs' current efforts in the area of violence education. The survey also investigated directors' views about particular types of violence and beliefs about how involved family practice residency programs should be in educating physicians in these areas. The majority of respondents (59%) indicated that violence education was represented "not at all" or "very little" in their formal curricula. However, there was significantly more teaching about specific types of violence, with child physical abuse, child s
