Prevalence of undiagnosed eye/vision disorders in a VA hospital.

A study population of one hundred and one subjects, chosen according to recommended epidemiologic procedures to assure an accurate representation of the total Birmingham veteran population, were given complete optometric examinations. The primary criterion for inclusion in the study was a need for coming to the hospital on the interview day for any health problem other than visual or ocular. The results of the statistical analysis showed agreement between the Birmingham veteran population and the general population with regard to vision and ocular disorders. Presbyopia was found to be the most

Surveillance of vision and ocular disorders in children with Down syndrome.

Children with Down syndrome have a high prevalence of ocular disorders. The UK Down's Syndrome Medical Interest Group (DSMIG) guidelines for ophthalmic screening were locally implemented into a protocol that included neonatal eye examination by an ophthalmologist and a comprehensive ophthalmological examination (cycloplegic refraction, ophthalmoscopy, and orthoptic assessment) by at least the age of 3 years, followed by preschool follow-up as indicated. We audited retrospectively surveillance for ocular disorders before and after the DSMIG-based guidelines were locally adopted in 1995. Results

Suppressing Retinal Remodeling to Mitigate Vision Loss in Photoreceptor Degenerative Disorders.

Rod and cone photoreceptors degenerate in retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration, robbing the visual system of light-triggered signals necessary for sight. However, changes in the retina do not stop with the photoreceptors. A stereotypical set of morphological and physiological changes, known as remodeling, occur in downstream retinal neurons. Some aspects of remodeling are homeostatic, with structural or functional changes compensating for partial loss of visual inputs. However, other aspects are nonhomeostatic, corrupting retinal information processing to obscure vision me

Structure-function correlates of vision loss in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders.

Optic neuritis (ON) in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) regularly leads to more profound vision loss compared to multiple sclerosis (MS) and myelin-oligodendrocyte-glycoprotein-antibody associated disease (MOGAD). Here we investigate ON-related vision loss in NMOSD compared to MS and MOGAD in order to identify neuroaxonal and retinal contributors to visual dysfunction. In this retrospective study we included patients with aquaporin-4-antibody seropositive NMOSD (n = 28), MOGAD (n = 14), MS (n = 29) and controls (n = 14). We assessed optic nerve damage and fovea morphometry by op

Disorders of vision in neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) following perinatal asphyxia in term infants is associated with neonatal mortality and a high risk of neurodevelopmental impairment later in life. Visual disorders are an accepted complication of HIE and the association has been cited in the literature many times. This review aims to study the evidence for this association and assess the quality of the data on which this is based. DESIGN: A systematic literature review was conducted and 922 citations were assessed using standard methods outlined by the Preferred Reporting Items for Sy

[Disorders of Simple Binocular Vision in Heterophoria and their Spectacle Correction].

This study deals with evaluation of binocular vision in group of young subjects without eye pathology. We examined at whole 68 subjects with average age 26 years, median 24 years. The sample was divided into two main groups. Group A contains subjects with far and near ortophoria (at whole 26 subjects = 38 %). Group B contains subjects with binocular vision disorder (at whole 42 subjects). One subject had strabismus. The most frequent non-strabismus disorder of binocular vision was convergence insufficiency (13 subjects = 19 %), simple esophoria (12 subjects = 17 %) and simple exophoria (8 subj

[Transdermal electrostimulation of optic nerves in neurosurgical patients with vision disorders].

Transcutaneous electrostimulation of optic nerves after Ye. B. Kompaneyets et al. (1985) was used in the treatment of 203 neurosurgical patients aged 5 to 65 years with vision disorders. Improvement of visual functions (vision acuity and/or visual field) was attained in 112 (55.2%) patients. No changes were observed in 91 (44.8%) patients. The authors investigated the relationship between the efficacy of transcutaneous electrostimulation of optic nerves and neurosurgical disease, status of visual function, history of vision disorders, ophthalmoscopic picture, and electrophysiological parameter

Colour vision impairments in bipolar disorder: A systematic review.

Visual impairments are common in patients with bipolar disorder (BD), and the neuropathophysiology may suggest a potential influence on colour vision. This systematic review aimed to assess existing data of colour vision impairment, including chromatic discrimination and colour blindness in patients with BD. Comprehensive literature search compliant with PRISMA 2020 was conducted in Medline, Embase, and Google Scholar from inception to February 28th, 2023. Our inclusion criteria were: (1) patients with a diagnosis of bipolar I or II disorder based on DSM, ICD, or clinical diagnosis, and (2) st

Functional vision disorder: a review of diagnosis, management and costs.

Functional vision disorder (FVD) is a relatively common diagnosis in ophthalmic practice which can be difficult to make because of clinician's apprehension to miss organic pathology. We review the diagnostic approach to patients with FVD, organic mimics of FVD, its diagnostic and management strategies and associated cost burden. Patients with FVD typically present with visual acuity and/or field loss. Diagnostic work-up should include patient observation, detailed history, pupillary examination, dilated ophthalmoscopy, visual field testing and ganglion cell analysis of the macular complex. Mos

Vision in children with autism spectrum disorder: a critical review.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition with approximately 1-2 per cent prevalence in the population. The condition has lifelong effects for the individual and family, and early intervention and management helps maximise quality of life and outcomes. Many studies of vision in ASD have attempted to link the behavioural and sensory deficits in ASD with underlying visual processing. From this work, it is clear that individuals with ASD 'see' and process the world differently, but there remain gaps in our understanding. This review will summarise our current knowled

Impact of vision disorders and vision impairment on motor vehicle crash risk and on-road driving performance: A systematic review.

Vision is important for safe driving, but there is limited understanding regarding the impact of vision disorders on driving ability and safety. This systematic review evaluated and summarized evidence on the impact of vision disorders and impairment on motor vehicle crash (MVC) risk and on-road driving performance across seven databases, was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020180135), and study quality rated using a standard tool. Forty-eight studies met the inclusion criteria for MVC risk (N = 36), on-road performance (N = 9), and both MVC risk and on-road performance (N = 3). O

Developing Treatments for Alzheimer's and Related Disorders with Precision Medicine: A Vision.

Precision medicine, also known as personalized medicine, is concerned with finding the right treatment for the right patient at the right time. It is a way of thinking focused on parsing heterogeneity ultimately down to the level of the individual. Its main mission is to identify characteristics of heterogeneous clinical conditions so as to target tailored therapies to individuals. Precision Medicine however is not an agnostic collection of all manner of clinical, genetic and other biologic data in select cohorts. This is an important point. Simply collecting as much information as possible on
