[Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis--indications of increased antiretroviral seroreactivity without obvious epidemiology].

Of 25 male and 13 female patients diagnosed as sporadic cases of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis between 1989 and 1992, 17 had reproducible serum antibodies against human foamy virus (HFV = human spuma retrovirus, HSRV). HFV-positive ALS patients had higher IgG3 concentrations than HFV-negatives (P < 0.05) and competed better on maedi-visna retroviral antigen than HFV-negatives or controls (P < 0.05), but did not differ otherwise. Two HFV-positive patients were living in the same building; two other ALS patients lived within 300 m of one another, and three HFV gag reactive men (2 ALS, 1 control)

The neurobiology of human immunodeficiency virus infections.

A variety of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems evolves during the course of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. Most are not related to documented opportunistic infections and may be the direct result of HIV infections, as large proportions of healthy and ill HIV-infected persons show evidence of nervous system infection. These diseases occur at different times during the infection and have diverse inflammatory, demyelinating, or degenerative pathological features that suggest different pathogenetic mechanisms. The route and determinants of HIV invasion of the n

Molecular and serological survey of some haemoprotozoan, rickettsial and viral diseases of small ruminants from Al-Madinah Al Munawarah, KSA.

The prevalence of some viral and haemoprotozoan infections in goats and sheep was investigated in the present study. The infections of Anaplasma spp. and Theileria spp. were encountered by PCR and cELISA for the detection of Anaplasma spp. Anaplasma spp. was more prevalent than Theileria spp. with a significant difference (Pvalue<0.05) in both goats and sheep, but, the infection in sheep was more prevalent than goats. Also four viral infections were detected: Rift Valley Fever Virus (RVFV), Bluetongue Virus (BTV), Madina Visna Virus (MVV) and Schmallenberg, (SBV) with an overall prevalence of

Performance deficits in SRLV-infected sheep quantify progressive disease severity.

Managing Maedi-Visna in sheep flocks infected by Small Ruminant Lentivirus (SRLV) by limiting production losses and reducing transmission could be a more cost-effective approach than eliminating the disease. We quantified the progressive physiological costs of SRLV infection by analysing performance measures as readily accessible criteria of disease severity in data from a five-year study of a Polish flock with bi-annual tests of serostatus. SRLV infection had no effect on ewes' pre-natal reproductive traits but caused increased mortality and reduced growth rate in their lambs, and reduced ewe

Slow viruses and chronic disease of the central nervous system.

Although recognized since the 1930s, slow infections have only recently received considerable attention. There are three types, group A (related to the type C RNA viruses), group B (bizarre agents such as scrapie and kuru) and group C (viruses such as measles which normally produce acute infections but which are behaving here in an unusual fashion). These viruses are only united in that they produce disease with excessively long incubation periods. Many slow infections result in neurological diseases and these will be discussed, together with some possible explanations of their action.

Scrapie at Abattoir: Monitoring, Control, and Differential Diagnosis of Wasting Conditions during Meat Inspection.

Wasting disease in small ruminants is frequently detected at slaughterhouses. The wasting disorder is manifested by the deterioration of the nutritional and physiological state of the animal indicated by thinness, emaciation, and cachexia. Evidence of emaciation and cachexia, alone, are pathological conditions leading to carcass condemnation during an inspection. Several diseases are associated with a wasting condition, including scrapie, pseudotuberculosis, tuberculosis, paratuberculosis, Maedi Visna, and tumor diseases. On the other hand, parasitic diseases, nutrition disorders, exposure or

Core nucleosomes are refractory to lentiviral DNA integration.

HIV-1 and other lentiviruses hijack the cellular chromatin-binding protein LEDGF/p75 to facilitate integration into active transcription units. However, the mechanism of chromatin engagement by lentiviral intasomes and the structural role of LEDGF/p75 in this process remain poorly understood. To address these gaps, we studied the activities of native HIV-1 preintegration complexes and in vitro-assembled lentiviral intasomes in the presence of chromatinized target DNA. While LEDGF/p75 was both essential and minimally sufficient to enhance lentiviral integration into chromatin containing histone

Phylogenetic analysis of small ruminant lentiviruses in Mongolian sheep supports an ancient east-west split for the genotype A.

The ovine maedi-visna virus (MVV) and caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV) are small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLVs) with striking genetic and structural similarities. The presence of SRLV in Mongolian sheep and goats was serologically demonstrated more than a decade ago; however, the viral genotype remains unknown. In total, 329 blood samples were collected from two sheep breeds (i.e., Khalkha and Sumber) in Tov, Govisumber, Arkhangay, Dornogovi, Zavkhan, and Sukhbaatar provinces, Mongolia. Serological and phylogenetic analyses were performed regardless of any apparent clinical signs, al

A polytropic caprine arthritis encephalitis virus promoter isolated from multiple tissues from a sheep with multisystemic lentivirus-associated inflammatory disease.

Caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) is a lentivirus that infects both goats and sheep and is closely related to maedi-visna virus that infects sheep; collectively, these viruses are known as small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV). Infection of goats and sheep with SRLV typically results in discrete inflammatory diseases which include arthritis, mastitis, pneumonia or encephalomyelitis. SRLV-infected animals concurrently demonstrating lentivirus-associated lesions in tissues of lung, mammary gland, joint synovium and the central nervous system are either very rare or have not been reported.

Diffuse infiltrative lymphocytosis syndrome in children and adults infected with HIV-1: a model of rheumatic illness caused by acquired viral infection.

Certain maternal/infant pairs, as well as other high-risk adults, develop a host-response HIV-1 infection characterized by circulating and tissue infiltrative CD8 T-cell lymphocytosis, termed Diffuse Infiltrative Lymphocytosis Syndrome (DILS). DILS primarily occurs in the salivary glands, lungs, renal interstitium, and gastrointestinal tract. DILS differs from Sjogren's syndrome in the degree of salivary gland enlargement, high frequency of extraglandular manifestations, paucity of autoantibodies, and distinct immunogenetic associations. Salivary gland B-cell lymphoma is a complication common

Retrovirus-associated myelopathies.

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I), the causative agent of adult T-cell leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (ATLL)--or a cross-reacting retrovirus--has been associated with tropical spastic paraparesis in Martinique, Jamaica, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, the Seychelles, and probably also in Zaire. The Caribbean basin and sub-Saharan Africa are endemic for ATLL. A similar etiology has been invoked in a chronic spastic myelopathy occurring in areas of high ATLL endemicity in Japan. An HTLV-I viral antigen has been demonstrated in cerebrospinal fluid lymphocytes of a Japanese patient wi

Nucleophile selection for the endonuclease activities of human, ovine, and avian retroviral integrases.

Retroviral integrases catalyze four endonuclease reactions (processing, joining, disintegration, and nonspecific alcoholysis) that differ in specificity for the attacking nucleophile and target DNA sites. To assess how the two substrates of this enzyme affect each other, we performed quantitative analyses, in three retroviral systems, of the two reactions that use a variety of nucleophiles. The integrase proteins of human immuno- deficiency virus type 1, visna virus, and Rous sarcoma virus exhibited distinct preferences for water or other nucleophiles during site-specific processing of viral D

Suppurative pleuropneumonia and a pulmonary abscess in a ram: ultrasonographic and radiographic findings.

This report describes a two-year-old White Alpine ram with suppurative pleuropneumonia and a lung abscess. Prior to admission, the ram had been unsuccessfully treated with antibiotics and levamisole. Clinical examination revealed that the general behaviour and condition of the ram were severely disturbed. The rectal temperature and respiratory rate were increased. Auscultation of the lungs revealed increased vesicular sounds. Based on clinical findings, a tentative diagnosis of bronchopneumonia was made. To confirm the diagnosis, blood was taken for serological testing for Maedi-Visna, and end

Exposure to viral and bacterial pathogens among Soay sheep (Ovis aries) of the St Kilda archipelago.

We assessed evidence of exposure to viruses and bacteria in an unmanaged and long-isolated population of Soay sheep (Ovis aries) inhabiting Hirta, in the St Kilda archipelago, 65 km west of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The sheep harbour many metazoan and protozoan parasites but their exposure to viral and bacterial pathogens is unknown. We tested for herpes viral DNA in leucocytes and found that 21 of 42 tested sheep were infected with ovine herpesvirus 2 (OHV-2). We also tested 750 plasma samples collected between 1997 and 2010 for evidence of exposure to seven other viral and

Human and experimental spongiform encephalopathies: recent progress in pathogenesis.

The spongiform encephalopathies belong to the group of "slow virus infections" of the nervous system, characterized by a long incubation period, a protracted course and involvement of the nervous system with a lethal outcome. In contrast to the conventional virus infections, such as visna in sheep and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in humans, the etiological agent for the spongiform encephalopathies has not been clearly defined. The known forms in animals are scrapie in sheep and goats, transmissible mink encephalopathy, and chronic wasting disease of mule deer and elk. In hu

Notes on the pathogenesis of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

In the original description by van Bogaert and De Busscher of subacute sclerosing leukoencephalitis (SSLE), great emphasis was placed upon the involvement of the white matter, a feature that, in addition to the absence of inclusion bodies, differentiated it from subacute inclusion body encephalitis (SIBE) of Dawson. Subsequently, the common features, primarily clinical, electroencephalographic and immunological led to the consolidation of both into the entity known as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). The white matter lesions of SSLE are identical to those that are seen in progressiv

The virus causing encephalomyelitis in sheep in Spain: a new member of the tick-borne encephalitis group.

The nucleotide and deduced primary amino acid sequence of the envelope gene of two virus isolates from the brains of Spanish sheep with encephalomyelitis, were determined and compared with those of other flaviviruses. The amino acid alignments showed that the Spanish viruses shared 95 to 96 per cent homology with the envelope protein of louping ill virus and western European tick-borne encephalitis virus. In comparison, the maximum variation in amino acid identities among strains of louping ill virus from the British Isles is 1.8 per cent. The Spanish isolates were distinguishable from all oth

Epidemiological landscape and genetic prospects for marker-assisted selection in Kazakh sheep.

This comprehensive review examines the current epidemiological landscape, genetic resistance mechanisms, and control strategies for major sheep diseases in Kazakhstan. The study systematically analyzes three primary disease categories: parasitic infestations (including echinococcosis, fascioliasis, gastrointestinal strongylatosis, and protozoan infections), infectious diseases (foot rot, scrapie, Maedi-Visna, pasteurellosis, brucellosis), and hereditary disorders. Our analysis revealed significant regional variations in disease prevalence, with southern and western regions of Kazakhstan exhibi

Glycosylation of IgG during potentially arthritogenic lentiviral infections.

Agalactosyl IgG [Gal(0)] was first discovered in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the proportion of this glycoform is also raised in tuberculosis and leprosy. This has helped reinforce the suggestion that RA may be triggered by a mycobacterium-like slow bacterial infection. On the other hand, arthritis can occur in mycobacterial diseases, so raised Gal(0) could be associated with a tendency to arthritis, rather than with a particular type of infection. Therefore, we wished to find out whether the percentage of Gal(0) [%Gal(0)] is increased in sheep and goats following infectio
