Latent encoding of movement in primary visual cortex.

Neurons in the primary visual cortex (V1) are classically thought to encode spatial features of visual stimuli through simple population codes: each neuron exhibits a preferred orientation and preferred spatial frequency, both of which remaining invariant to other aspects of the visual stimulus. Here, we show that this simple rule does not apply to the representation of major features of stimulus motion, including stimulus direction and temporal frequency (TF). We collected an extensive dataset of cat V1 responses to stimuli covarying in orientation, direction, spatial frequency, and TF to ass

Ensemble Coding of Hidden Objects in Visual Cortex.

Many species exhibit the understanding that visual objects that become hidden by others nonetheless still exist, a property known as object permanence. Previous studies in human and nonhuman primates have provided evidence that neurons within visual cortex encode objects that are remembered but not seen. However, past neurophysiological studies have generally failed to find evidence of visual cortical representations of hidden objects. We measured the activity of large populations of neurons within dorsal extrastriate cortex of macaques trained to monitor the identity of visual objects that mo

Dynamics of energy-efficient coding in visual cortex.

Sparse coding enables cortical populations to represent sensory inputs efficiently, yet its temporal dynamics remain poorly understood. Here, we provide direct evidence that stimulus onset initially drives broad cortical activation, transiently reducing sparseness while increasing mutual information. Over time, competitive interactions refine the population response, maintaining high mutual information as activity declines and sparseness increases. Critically, coding efficiency, quantified as the ratio of mutual information to metabolic cost, steadily improves throughout stimulus presentation,

Motion Processing in Visual Cortex of Maculopathy Patients.

Previous studies on animal models suggested that visual areas involved in motion processing could undergo important cortical reorganizations following retinal damages. This could have major implications for patients suffering from macular degeneration (MD), one leading cause of vision loss. Here, we performed fMRI recordings in a group of maculopathy patients (N = 7, 3 women, including individuals suffering from age-related macular degeneration or from Stargardt's disease) and a control group to characterize the motion processing cortical network in MD patients and determine whether this netwo

Luminance invariant encoding in mouse primary visual cortex.

The visual system adapts to maintain sensitivity and selectivity over a large range of luminance intensities. One way that the retina maintains sensitivity across night and day is by switching between rod and cone photoreceptors, which alters the receptive fields and interneuronal correlations of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). While these adaptations allow the retina to transmit visual information to the brain across environmental conditions, the code used for that transmission varies. To determine how downstream targets encode visual scenes across light levels, we measured the effects of lumi

Image luminance changes contrast sensitivity in visual cortex.

Accurate measures of contrast sensitivity are important for evaluating visual disease progression and for navigation safety. Previous measures suggested that cortical contrast sensitivity was constant across widely different luminance ranges experienced indoors and outdoors. Against this notion, here, we show that luminance range changes contrast sensitivity in both cat and human cortex, and the changes are different for dark and light stimuli. As luminance range increases, contrast sensitivity increases more within cortical pathways signaling lights than those signaling darks. Conversely, whe

Posterior Parietal Cortex Guides Visual Decisions in Rats.

Neurons in putative decision-making structures can reflect both sensory and decision signals, making their causal role in decisions unclear. Here, we tested whether rat posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is causal for processing visual sensory signals or instead for accumulating evidence for decision alternatives. We disrupted PPC activity optogenetically during decision making and compared effects on decisions guided by auditory versus visual evidence. Deficits were largely restricted to visual decisions. To further test for visual dominance in PPC, we evaluated electrophysiological responses af

Visual field map clusters in human frontoparietal cortex.

The visual neurosciences have made enormous progress in recent decades, in part because of the ability to drive visual areas by their sensory inputs, allowing researchers to define visual areas reliably across individuals and across species. Similar strategies for parcellating higher-order cortex have proven elusive. Here, using a novel experimental task and nonlinear population receptive field modeling, we map and characterize the topographic organization of several regions in human frontoparietal cortex. We discover representations of both polar angle and eccentricity that are organized into

Stimulating occipital cortex enhances visual working memory consolidation.

Visual working memory (WM) enables us to store and manipulate visual information for a short duration. Traditionally, prefrontal and parietal regions have been associated with visual WM processing; however recent fMRI studies have shown that visual WM information can be decoded from the visual cortex as well. In this study, we used transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to investigate the role of the visual cortex in retaining visual WM information. All subjects participated in two sessions of sham and active tDCS followed by a standard visual WM task. Two conditions were tested: in sh

Tetanus neurotoxin-induced epilepsy in mouse visual cortex.

Tetanus neurotoxin (TeNT) is a metalloprotease that cleaves the synaptic protein VAMP/synaptobrevin, leading to focal epilepsy. Although this model is widely used in rats, the time course and spatial specificity of TeNT proteolytic action have not been precisely defined. Here we have studied the biochemical, electrographic, and anatomic characteristics of TeNT-induced epilepsy in mouse visual cortex (V1). We found that VAMP cleavage peaked at 10 days, was reduced at 21 days, and completely extinguished 45 days following TeNT delivery. VAMP proteolysis was restricted to the injected V1 and ipsi

Retinotopically defined primary visual cortex in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome, caused by a hemizygous microdeletion on chromosome 7q11.23, is characterized by severe impairment in visuospatial construction. To examine potential contributions of early visual processing to this cognitive problem, we functionally mapped the size and neuroanatomical variability of primary visual cortex (V1) in high-functioning adults with Williams syndrome and age- and IQ-matched control participants from the general population by using fMRI-based retinotopic mapping and cortical surface models generated from high-resolution structural MRI. Higher order visual processing in macaque extrastriate cortex.

The extrastriate cortex of primates encompasses a substantial portion of the cerebral cortex and is devoted to the higher order processing of visual signals and their dispatch to other parts of the brain. A first step towards the understanding of the function of this cortical tissue is a description of the selectivities of the various neuronal populations for higher order aspects of the image. These selectivities present in the various extrastriate areas support many diverse representations of the scene before the subject. The list of the known selectivities includes that for pattern direction

Serial functional imaging poststroke reveals visual cortex reorganization.

PURPOSE: Visual cortical reorganization following injury remains poorly understood. The authors performed serial functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on patients with visual cortex infarction to evaluate early and late striate, ventral, and dorsal extrastriate cortical activation. METHODS: Patients were studied with fMRI within 10 days and at 6 months. The authors used a high-level visual activation task designed to activate the ventral extrastriate cortex. These data were compared to those of age-appropriate healthy control participants. RESULTS: The results from 24 healthy control

Images of illusory motion in primary visual cortex.

Illusory motion can be generated by successively flashing a stationary visual stimulus in two spatial locations separated by several degrees of visual angle. In appropriate conditions, the apparent motion is indistinguishable from real motion: The observer experiences a luminous object traversing a continuous path from one stimulus location to the other through intervening positions where no physical stimuli exist. The phenomenon has been extensively investigated for nearly a century but little is known about its neurophysiological foundation. Here we present images of activations in the prima

Visual deprivation effects on human motor cortex excitability.

Single and paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) were applied to the motor cortex of 12 healthy volunteers, who were instructed to relax under eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions with room lights on and after 30 min of blindfolding. Compared to the eyes-open condition, significantly larger motor-evoked potentials and less intracortical inhibition were observed during blindfolding. Visual deafferentation changes resting human motor cortex excitability and might be a novel way to promote brain plasticity. These results raise the issue of how widespread the effects of temporary de

Sleep enhances plasticity in the developing visual cortex.

During a critical period of brain development, occluding the vision of one eye causes a rapid remodeling of the visual cortex and its inputs. Sleep has been linked to other processes thought to depend on synaptic remodeling, but a role for sleep in this form of cortical plasticity has not been demonstrated. We found that sleep enhanced the effects of a preceding period of monocular deprivation on visual cortical responses, but wakefulness in complete darkness did not do so. The enhancement of plasticity by sleep was at least as great as that produced by an equal amount of additional deprivatio

The kinetic occipital region in human visual cortex.

In the present study we showed that the kinetic occipital (KO) region, located laterally in occipital cortex approximately 20 mm behind human MT/V5, can be strongly and bilaterally activated under passive viewing conditions. We used continuous, randomly changing visual stimulation to compare kinetic gratings to uniform motion and kinetic gratings to luminance defined gratings. The KO activations under these passive conditions are stronger than those observed when the two types of gratings are compared under active conditions, i.e. while subjects perform a task (counting gratings of a given ori

The visual cortex and visual cognition in Huntington's disease: An overview of current literature.

The processing of visual stimuli from retina to higher cortical areas has been extensively studied in the human brain. In Huntington's disease (HD), an inherited neurodegenerative disorder, it is suggested that visual processing deficits are present in addition to more characteristic signs such as motor disturbances, cognitive dysfunction, and behavioral changes. Visual deficits are clinically important because they influence overall cognitive performance and have implications for daily functioning. The aim of this review is to summarize current literature on clinical visual deficits, visual c

The physiological basis of visual hallucinations after damage to the primary visual cortex.

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the neuroanatomical correlates of visual hallucinations in a patient with a left visual field defect who had suffered bilateral occipital infarction. By cross-correlating the functional magnetic resonance imaging data with the hallucination events, we were able to identify the cerebral activity underlying the hallucinations. Bilateral activation was observed during visual stimulation in the calcarine fissure and the same activation was found medially in the left and right occipital cortex adjacent to the infarcted areas.
