Imaging evaluation of the optic nerve and visual pathway including cranial nerves affecting the visual pathway.

The radiologic investigation of the optic pathways has an integral part in the diagnostic evaluation of diverse lesions, such as inflammatory disease, vascular disorders, and benign and malignant tumors that afflict the optic pathways. These radiologic methods consist principally of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and, in vascular lesions, magnetic resonance angiography and conventional angiography.

Visual outcome in meningiomas around anterior visual pathways treated with linear accelerator fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Meningiomas threatening the anterior visual pathways (AVPs) and not amenable for surgery are currently treated with multisession stereotactic radiotherapy. Stereotactic radiotherapy is available with a number of devices. The most ubiquitous include the gamma knife, CyberKnife, tomotherapy, and isocentric linear accelerator systems. The purpose of our study was to describe a case series of AVP meningiomas treated with linear accelerator fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (FSRT) using the multiple, noncoplanar, dynamic conformal rotation paradigm and to compare the success and compl

Positive spontaneous visual phenomena limited to the hemianopic field in lesions of central visual pathways.

We prospectively studied 32 patients with ischemic infarction of the retrochiasmal visual pathways. Positive spontaneous visual phenomena (PSVP) in the blind hemifield were present in 13 patients (41%). The PSVP were subdivided into phosphenes, photopsias, visual hallucinations, palinopsia, and agitated delirium with hemianopia. PSVP were never associated with auditory or other sensory positive phenomena, except in patients with agitated delirium. Patients with photopsias, phosphenes, palinopsia, and visual hallucinations had similar lesions in MRI/CT, suggesting no anatomic area unique for th

[A.R.G.U.S. A model for an interactive visual field and visual pathway atlas].

A.R.G.U.S. is a data base that connects visual field defects directly with possible lesion sites that are presented graphically. By means of a touch screen or "mouse," scotomata can be depicted on a VDU, while on a second monitor the computer program simultaneously shows the resulting defects in the visual pathway. It is possible to page through different sections of the visual pathway; the lesion is probably located in the section where the affected fibers lie the closest to each other and where the non-affected fibers are the farthest apart. Additionally, the VDU depicting the visual pathway

Distinct Visual Pathways of Threat Retrieval in Fear-Conditioned Faces.

Many have demonstrated rapid (< 100 ms) visuo-cortical differentiation of threat-associated faces. This may go back to low-spatial frequency (LSF) visual information originating from magnocellular pathways. Yet it remains unknown whether potentially magnocellular fear signals extend beyond evolutionarily prepared emotional faces. If so, spatial frequency characteristics should modulate visual processing of faces with newly acquired threat-relevance. Furthermore, it is unclear whether sub-bands of the visual spectrum are associated with autonomic arousal. Using a differential fear-conditioning

Specialized parallel pathways for adaptive control of visual object pursuit.

To pursue an unpredictably moving visual object, the brain must generate motor commands that continuously steer the object to the midline of the visual field via feedback. Behavior implies that visual pursuit relies on a feedback loop with flexible gain, but the mechanisms of this "adaptive control" are not well-understood. Here we show that adaptive control in the Drosophila pursuit system involves two parallel feedback loops. One serves to steer the object coarsely toward the midline; the properties of this pathway are relatively constant. The other functions to steer the object precisely to

The dorsal visual stream revisited: Stable circuits or dynamic pathways?

In both macaque and human brain, information regarding visual motion flows from the extrastriate area V6 along two different paths: a dorsolateral one towards areas MT/V5, MST, V3A, and a dorsomedial one towards the visuomotor areas of the superior parietal lobule (V6A, MIP, VIP). The dorsolateral visual stream is involved in many aspects of visual motion analysis, including the recognition of object motion and self motion. The dorsomedial stream uses visual motion information to continuously monitor the spatial location of objects while we are looking and/or moving around, to allow skilled re

[Afferent pupillary disorders in postchiasmal lesions of the visual pathways].

Classically, the pupillary pathway is considered as a simple reflex arc comprising retinal ganglion cells, midbrain interneurons, oculomotor nerve and short ciliary nerves. However, there are some specialties in the construction of the pupillary pathways that have to be kept in mind when dealing with diseases involving pupillary disorders. This may help to localise lesions. Additionally, studies in patients with lesions of the retrogeniculate pathways have shown that pupillary disorders are possible even with lesions not involving the classical reflex arc. The pupil is therefore not only contr

Direct visual pathways for reaching movements in the macaque monkey.

The brain seems to process the location of objects faster than their intrinsic features, such as size, when these parameters are used to guide action. To uncover a potential anatomical substrate of these different processing speeds, we investigated in the monkey the pathways linking extrastriate visual cortex with the dorsal premotor area, a frontal area known to be involved in visually guided reaching movements. Retrogradely transported anatomical tracers were injected at physiologically defined sites and the distribution of labelled cells was examined in the ipsilateral cortex. We found a pr

Magnetic resonance imaging of the visual pathways in human albinos.

Neuroanatomical and electrophysiological studies of albino visual pathways have demonstrated that retinogeniculate axons arising from the temporal retina decussate abnormally in the optic chiasm to synapse in the contralateral lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). Anomalies in the LGN secondarily disrupt normal geniculo-cortical and interhemispheric cortico-cortical (callosal) visual connections. It is not known whether retinogeniculate misrouting affects the size or configuration of the afferent visual pathways in human albinos. We used T1-weighted coronal and sagittal magnetic resonance imaging

Retinotopic order appears before ocular separation in developing visual pathways.

In mammals, the major subcortical visual structures receive projections from both eyes, with the uncrossed projection being smaller than the crossed. Each projection is arranged as a separate orderly map of one hemiretina. Although these hemiretinal maps are separate in the nuclei, they are aligned so that the representations of points in the visual field are in register, thus there is a continuity of visual field representation between them. During the early development of the binocular pathways, terminals from the two eyes overlap almost entirely. As development proceeds, terminals arising f

Genetic abnormality of the visual pathways in a "white" tiger.

"White"tigers show an inherited reduction of pigment, produced by an autosomal recessive gene. The brain of one of these tigers shows an abnormality of the visual pathways similar to abnormalities that are associated with albinism in many other mammals. There is a close relationship between the reduced pigment formation, the pathway abnormality, and strabismus.

Visual Pathways Involvement in Friedreich's Ataxia Patients Without Macular Impairment.

Objectives: Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) abnormalities in Friedreich Ataxia (FA) may result from dysfunction of retinal ganglion cells (RGC), post-retinal visual pathways, or both. Therefore, we aimed to clarify whether in Friedreich Ataxia (FA), abnormal neural conduction is due to dysfunctional RGC, impaired conduction along the post-retinal visual pathways, or both. The secondary aim of the study was to clarify the relationship between a possible RGC and/or post-retinal dysfunction and the patient's age, age at disease onset, and disease duration. Method: Fourteen FA patients (14 eyes; mea

Light, Sound, and Melatonin: Investigating Multisensory Pathways for Visual Restoration.

Multisensory integration is fundamental for coherent perception and interaction with the environment. While cortical mechanisms of multisensory convergence are well studied, emerging evidence implicates specialized retinal ganglion cells-particularly melanopsin-expressing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs)-in crossmodal processing. This review explores how hierarchical brain networks (e.g., superior colliculus, parietal cortex) and ipRGCs jointly shape perception and behavior, focusing on their convergence in multisensory plasticity. We highlight ipRGCs as gatekeepers

Retinal and Visual Pathways Involvement in Carriers of Friedreich's Ataxia.

Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA) is a rare autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder due to the homozygous pathological expansion of guanine-adenine-adenine (GAA) triplet repeats in the first intron of the FXN gene, which encodes for the mitochondrial protein frataxin. In the visual system, the typical manifestations are ocular motility abnormality, optic neuropathy, and retinopathy. Despite the evidence of ophthalmological impairment in FRDA patients, there is a lack of information about the morpho-functional condition of the retina and of the optic pathways in healthy heterozygous carriers of
