Protocol for analysing the epidemiology of maternal mortality in Zimbabwe: A civil registration and vital statistics trend study.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) carries the highest burden of maternal mortality, yet, the accurate maternal mortality ratios (MMR) are uncertain in most SSA countries. Measuring maternal mortality is challenging in this region, where civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems are weak or non-existent. We describe a protocol designed to explore the use of CRVS to monitor maternal mortality in Zimbabwe-an SSA country. METHODS: In this study, we will collect deliveries and maternal death data from CRVS (government death registration records) and health facilities for 2007-2008

Public Health Data in Action: An Analysis of Using Louisiana Vital Statistics for Quality Improvement and Payment Reform.

Introduction In 2012, the Louisiana (LA) Department of Health and Hospitals revised the LA birth certificate to include medical reasons for births before 39 completed weeks' gestation. We compared the completeness and validity of these data with hospital discharge records. Methods For births occurring 4/1/2012-9/30/2012 at Woman's Hospital of Baton Rouge, we linked maternal delivery and newborn birth data collected through the National Perinatal Information Center with LA birth certificates. Among early term births (37-38 completed weeks' gestation), we quantified the reasons for early deliver

Linking a European cohort of children born with congenital anomalies to vital statistics and mortality records: A EUROlinkCAT study.

EUROCAT is a European network of population-based congenital anomaly (CA) registries. Twenty-one registries agreed to participate in the EUROlinkCAT study to determine if reliable information on the survival of children born with a major CA between 1995 and 2014 can be obtained through linkage to national vital statistics or mortality records. Live birth children with a CA could be linked using personal identifiers to either their national vital statistics (including birth records, death records, hospital records) or to mortality records only, depending on the data available within each region

Shift of HIV/AIDS Deaths to an Older Age and Gender Difference: Inferences Derived from the Vital Statistics of Japan.

From 1995 to 2000, the mortality rates of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) patients < 54 years of age have declined; however, since 2000, deaths of HIV/AIDS patients aged > 55 have started to increase. Although deaths directly linked to infections have declined since 2005, those related to malignancy, encephalopathy, interstitial pneumonia, wasting syndrome, etc. persisted. In 10 years from 1999-2004 to 2010-2017, the age at death shifted by 5 years towards an older age in the general population and in patients with HIV/AIDS (mainly males), adult T-cel

Age-specific impact of COVID-19 on birth rates in Japan: An interrupted time-series analysis using national vital statistics.

OBJECTIVES: A study investigating the impact of COVID-19 on birth rates across women's age groups has not been previously conducted in Japan. Therefore, we examined this issue using national birth data. METHODS: The analysis utilized monthly live birth data from the Vital Statistics from 2015 to 2023, which were accessed on July 27, 2025. We estimated the expected number of births in the post-pandemic period through quasi-Poisson regression analysis and calculated the ratios of the sum of actual births to that of predicted births for each women's age group. In addition, a segmented regression

Recalculation of the late fetal death rate in Mexico, 2013-2023 using ICD-11 criteria applied to national vital statistics.

BACKGROUND: Cross-national comparability of fetal mortality indicators is limited by heterogeneous definitions and denominators. Mexico's official fetal death indicators include all gestational ages and use live births as the denominator, diverging from international standards. We recalculated late fetal death rates using ICD-11 criteria and compared them with published national and international data. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of national fetal death data from Mexico (2013-2023). Publicly available statistics on fetal deaths and registered live-birth datasets were used.

Association between gestational weight gain and preterm birth and post-term birth: a longitudinal study from the National Vital Statistics System database.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the association between gestational weight gain (GWG) and preterm birth and post-term birth. METHODS: This longitudinal-based research studied singleton pregnant women from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) (2019). Total GWG (kg) was converted to gestational age-standardized z scores. The z-scores of GWG were divided into four categories according to the quartile of GWG, and the quantile 2 interval was used as the reference for the analysis. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between GWG and

Population-level impact of osteoporotic fractures on mortality and trends over time: a nationwide analysis of vital statistics for France, 1968-2004.

Osteoporotic fractures are one of the leading causes of death in the elderly population, but mortality may have been reduced by the advances in management and prevention during recent decades. The authors analyzed the population-level impact of these fractures on mortality in France from 1968 to 2004. About 20 million death certificates registered in metropolitan France from 1968 to 2004 were analyzed. Osteoporotic fractures were identified by using a previously developed methodology. Age-specific and standardized mortality rates were calculated by site of fracture and sex, and time trends wer

Binge drinking and mortality among older adults: Findings from the Canadian Community Health Survey linked to the Canadian Vital Statistics Death Database.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is a growing public health concern among older adults, yet research has disproportionately focused on younger adults. The relationship between binge drinking and mortality among older adults represents a critical research gap. OBJECTIVES: (1) To examine the association between binge drinking frequency and mortality among older adults; (2) To identify whether this relationship is attenuated by controlling for various sociodemographic and health factors. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2005-2014 Canadian Community Health Survey linked to the Canadian Vital Statisti
