BACKGROUND: Equine motor neuron disease (EMND) is a spontaneous neurologic disorder of adult horses which results from the degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain stem. Clinical manifestations, pathological findings, and epidemiologic attributes resemble those of human motor neuron disease (MND). As in MND the etiology of the disease is not known. We evaluated the predisposition role of vitamin E deficiency on the risk of EMND.
METHODS: Eleven horses at risk of EMND were identified and enrolled in a field trial at different times. The horses were maintained on a diet defici

A group of Walker Hounds and Beagles that were fed a diet of table scraps were examined because of slow, progressive loss of vision. Clinical and microscopic features of the disease were correlated to the dogs' micronutrient status. Sensory retinal degeneration, predominantly in the central tapetal fundus, was found in all dogs, and severity of changes varied with age of the dog. Plasma, serum, and tissue concentrations of vitamin E were low in affected dogs (10 to 40% of control values). Lipofuscin accumulation was found on microscopic examination in retinal pigment epithelium, smooth muscle

Vitamin E (Vit E) is an important component of the lung's defense against oxidant injury. The aim of this study was to determine a) if adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was associated with a decrease in Vit E plasma level linked to an enhancement of plasma lipoperoxidation, and b) if this Vit E deficiency might be explained by malnutrition and/or a consumption defect. Vit E, lipoperoxides (LP), total lipids, and fatty acid plasma levels were measured in 12 patients with ARDS (PaO2 less than or equal to 60 Torr with FIO2 0.6 on mechanical ventilation). At the onset of ARDS (T0), the de

To test whether vitamin E deficiency might influence the course of essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency, Long Evans rats were fed diets containing a marginal amount (1.5% of calories) of 18:2 omega 6 or 18:3 omega 3 fatty acid with complete absence of the other and with or without vitamin E. Vitamin E contents decreased continuously in serum and liver in all rats fed the E-free diets but in the brains of only the rats fed the marginal 18:3 omega 3, E-free diet. It is considered that the vitamin E is cooxidized in the liver with 22:6 omega 3, since this fatty acid is very low in livers of the

BACKGROUND: Ataxia with vitamin E deficiency (AVED) is an autosomal recessive disorder that usually presents with ataxia, areflexia, and proprioceptive and vibratory sensory loss. Dystonia has been reported rarely.
CASE REPORT: An 11-year-old female presented with dystonic head tremor and cervical and bilateral arm dystonia. Her 14-year-old older brother had dystonic head tremor and generalized dystonia. One year later, the brother developed dysarthria, limb dysmetria, and gait ataxia. Compound heterozygous mutations in TTPA were detected, confirming the diagnosis of AVED.
DISCUSSION: AVED m

Although postgastrectomy vitamin E deficiency rarely occurs, it can cause neuromuscular disorder such as neuropathy, myopathy and cerebellar ataxia. We encounter a lot of cases whose serum vitamin E level were decreased after gastrectomy. We evaluated the oral vitamin E intake as a therapy to these cases. The subjects of this study were 11 gastrectomized patients (8 patients had total gastrectomy, 2 subtotal gastrtectomy, 1 partial gastrectomy) with decreased vitamin E. 10 patients had neurological complications such as dizziness, dysesthesia, truncal ataxia. Serum vitamin E increased to norma

The role of vitamin E deficiency in the development of retinal pigment epithelial dystrophy was investigated in 11 cocker spaniels and four other dogs. The concentration of alpha-tocopherol was measured by high performance liquid chromatography in plasma samples obtained from the affected dogs and from 28 ophthalmoscopically normal, healthy control dogs. The mean (sd) plasma alpha-tocopherol concentration in the normal dogs was 20.2 (7.1) microg/ml, compared with 1.14 (0.67) microg/ml in the 11 affected cocker spaniels. The difference between the two groups remained highly significant when the

We describe a patient with a progressive neurological disorder consisting of ataxia, loss of proprioception and pyramidal tract dysfunction in his sixth decade. He had severe vitamin E deficiency due to fat malabsorption secondary to chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Sural nerve biopsy revealed a reduced number of myelinated fibres. MRI of the cervical spine showed high-signal lesions on T2-weighted images in the posterior columns, correlating well with the clinical findings.

We describe a 14-year-old boy who was severely debilitated by the neurological syndrome associated with vitamin E deficiency secondary to chronic cholestatic liver disease. In addition to the usual neurological deficits described with this deficiency, the patient had severe bulbar weakness and vision loss which we attribute to the degree and duration of his vitamin E deficiency. Vitamin A deficiency may have contributed to his visual disturbance. Early recognition of vitamin E deficiency is important, as the neurological and visual disorders which result are treatable.

Eight 5-to 8-week-old Beagle pups were allotted to 4 groups of 2 dogs each. For 55 to 70 days, they were fed either a semisynthetic basal diet (BD) deficient in vitamin E and selenium (Se) (group 1) or the BD supplemented with either 30 IU alpha-tocopherol/kg (group 2), 0.5 ppm Se as selenite (group 3), or 1.0 ppm Se as selenite (group 4). In the dogs fed the BD, clinical signs of vitamin E-Se deficiency developed after 40 to 60 days. These signs were accompanied by increased plasma activity of creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT). The dogs were euthanatized

The effect of oral vitamin E therapy (800 IU/day) on correcting haematologic variables and on raising the plasma vitamin E level among glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficient subjects with history of hemolysis was studied. After 16 week period there was a positive response to vitamin E administration presented by sustained improvement in blood hemoglobin and plasma vitamin E concentrations. In the meanwhile, the vitamin E supplementation led to reduced reticulocytosis and control % hemolysis.

Effects of vitamin E (V.E) and vitamin C (V.C) deficiency on the progress of alcoholic liver disorder in 72 Osteogenic Disorder Shionogi (ODS) male rats were studied. Animals were divided into two groups which received 5% ethanol liquid diet (A group) or pair-fed an isocalorical liquid diet with carbohydrate replacing ethanol (C group). All animals were pair-fed with these diets free of V.E during experiment period. In first experiment, after pair-feeding with the diets free of V.C for 2 or 5 weeks, the animals were killed. In another experiment, after pair-feeding with the diets free of V.C f

The characteristic features of multiple sclerosis (MS) include indications that its foundations are laid in early childhood as evidence by instances of the clustering of cases in particular localities by place of birth. Then there is the pattern of distribution in which the prevalence of MS among Caucasians progressively diminishes as the equator is approached, and the familial tendency of the disease to occur in close relatives of those who suffer from it. What is perhaps the most intriguing of all is the prevalence in the Orkney and Shetland Islands which is the highest in the world as far a

BACKGROUND: Vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid, VC) and vitamin E (α-tocopherol, VE) play important physiological roles as endogenous antioxidants in many tissues and organs. However, their roles in the brain remain entirely elusive. We established senescence marker protein 30 (SMP30)/α-tocopherol transfer protein (αTTP) double knockout (DKO) mice as a novel VC and VE double-deficiency model and examined the effect of VC and VE double-deficiency on brain functions.
METHODS: DKO and wild-type (WT) mice were divided into the following two groups: mice in the CE (+) group were supplied with sufficient a

Micronutrient malnutrition is usually highly prevalent in areas endemic for Chagas disease. Nevertheless, the contribution of micronutrient deficiency to the immunopathology of this infection is often overlooked. In the present work, we assessed the effects of vitamin E deficiency on acute Trypanosoma cruzi (Y strain) infection of Holtzman rats. At 20 days post infection, vitamin E deficiency induced changes in leukocyte levels and exacerbated the myocarditis and sympathetic denervation of ventricular hearts. Vitamin E-deficient infected rats displayed significant leukopenia, evidenced by the

We report a 44-year-old woman in whom intestinal bypass for obesity at age 23 resulted in chronic malabsorption. After hysterectomy for menorrhagia due to atypical endometrial hyperplasia, the finding of myometrial lipofuscinosis led to a demonstration of vitamin E deficiency. Vitamin E supplementation led to an unexpected improvement in the unsteadiness of gait and slurring of speech of which she had also complained. We suggest that supplementation with vitamin E should be routine in all patients with persistent severe steatorrhoea.

Obesity is a prevailing health concern, with bariatric surgery being a common treatment option despite the potential nutritional risks and poorly understood postoperative physiological changes, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. Neurological complications following bariatric surgery, often secondary to micronutrient deficiencies like vitamin B12, thiamine, and copper deficiencies, have been increasingly reported. This report presents a case of a 20-year-old female patient who developed neurological deficits, specifically bilateral lower limb weakness, following laparoscopic sleeve gas

Vitamin E deficiency has been found to impair bone calcification. This study was done to determine the effects of vitamin E deficiency and supplementation on parathyroid hormone, i.e. the hormone involved in bone regulation. Female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups: 1) normal rat chow (RC), 2) vitamin E deficiency (VED), vitamin E deficient rats supplemented with 3) 60 mg/kg alpha-tocotrienol (ATT) and 4) 60 mg/kg (alpha-tocopherol (ATF). Treatment was carried out for 3 months. Vitamin E deficiency caused hypocalcaemia during the first month of the treatment period, increased the

The severity of the heart damage caused by a coxsackievirus infection in mice is determined by several factors, including the genotype of the infecting virus as well as the genetic background of the infected host. Earlier work by us showed that the cardiovirulence of a given coxsackievirus genotype could be increased substantially by feeding the host a diet nutritionally deficient in either selenium or vitamin E. Here we report that host genetic background as a determinant of viral infection outcome is superseded by feeding the host a diet nutritionally deficient in both selenium and vitamin E
