Intestinal volvulus caused by a persistent omphalomesenteric band: report of one case.

Persistent omphalomesenteric band is a rare cause of volvulus or intestinal obstruction. A 7-month-old male infant was brought to this Emergency Room after having shown poor appetite for three days, frequent bilious vomiting, and fever for half a day. Physical examination revealed the infant was dehydrated and had slight abdominal distension as well as hypoactive bowel sounds with a tender, ill-defined mass over right lower quadrant. Radiography and sonography were consistent with distal small bowel obstruction. Emergent laparotomy was done and a fibrous band found extending from the anti-mese

Ultrasound of the discharging umbilicus.

Ultrasound of a patent urachus has been well described. However, ultrasound of the other congenital abnormalities affecting the umbilicus has not. Two cases are described, one of a vitelline (omphalomesenteric) duct and one of an umbilical granuloma, in which the ultrasound findings guided the child's management, preventing a minilaparotomy.

Fine structure of the female reproductive ducts of Cyathocephalus truncatus (Cestoda: Spathebothriidea), from salmonid fish.

The fine structure of the ovary, ovicapt, oviduct, fertilisation canal, vitelline ducts, vitelline reservoir, ovovitelline duct, ootype and Mehlis' gland, and proximal, middle and distal parts of the uterus of the spathebothriidean cestode, Cyathocephalus truncatus (Pallas, 1781), from salmoniform fish, has been studied for the first time by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Emphasis was given to characteristics which might shed light on the unclarified phylogenetic position of spathebothriideans, belonging among the most basal tapeworms (Eucestoda). New for cestodes is the finding of a

Meckel's diverticulum: A rare cause of acute intestinal occlusion.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract (Lequet et al., 2017). It results from incomplete obliteration of the vitelline (omphaloenteric) duct. Observed diverticulum complications include inflammation and perforation, hemorrhage and obstruction (Kawamoto et al., 2015). We are reporting on a case of Meckel's diverticulum revealed by acute intestinal obstruction.

New advances in human embryology: morphofunctional relationship between the embryo and the yolk sac.

Organogenesis occurs during the first 8 weeks of human embryonic development; in consequence, early human growth and development take place before and in the absence of fully developed internal organs. During this period, normal development depends on several factors, but two are imperative: nutrition and a functional transport system for the distribution of nutrients and for waste disposal. The yolk sac (YS), a highly differentiated adnexal organ, is known to accomplish this fundamental task during early pregnancy. In this review, we summarize our contribution to the understanding of early hu

Wet umbilicus caused by pancreatic heterotopia in urachal remains.

Drainage from the umbilicus may be due to the presence of structures derived from the vitelline duct or urachus, granulomas, ectopic tissue, or poor hygienic practice. This paper discusses the case of a 6-month-old infant with a wet umbilicus caused by ectopic pancreatic tissue, in urachal remains. No similar cases have been found in the literature.

Prolapse of inverted ileal loops through a patent vitellointestinal duct.

We report a case of a prolapsed patent vitellointestinal duct (PVID) in a 2-month-old girl child who presented with sudden increase in size of a polypoidal lesion into a large, 'Y'-shaped reddish, prolapsing lesion, discharging gaseous and faecal matter at her umbilicus. The lesion was diagnosed as a prolapse of inverted ileal loops through the PVID. The child had no associated congenital anomalies. A transumbilical exploration was performed, followed by wedge resection and anastomosis. The child tolerated the procedure well and the postoperative course was uneventful. If the omphalomesenteric

Unusual presentation of patent vitello intestinal duct with round worms emerging from the umbilicus.

Patient vitello intestinal duct (VID) is not an uncommon anomaly in children. It usually presents with fecal discharge from the umbilicus. Round worm infestation is very common in Indian children, but an association of patent VID and ascariasis, presenting as round worms emerging from the umbilicus, is unique and has not been previously reported in the literature. We present such a case in a 2-year-old boy who presented with a history of round worms coming out through the umbilicus. It was provisionally diagnosed to be a case of patent VID, which was proven correct on laparotomy.

The Taurus sign: A novel clinical sign for rapid diagnosis of patent vitello-intestinal duct with double intusussception.

A patent vitello-intestinal duct uncommonly presents as neonatal bowel prolapse. We describe a 20-day-old infant with double intussusception showing the Taurus sign, confirmed surgically and treated by resection and anastomosis with good recovery. This distinctive sign allows rapid bedside diagnosis, signals vascular compromise, guides surgery, and promotes urgent intervention, helping prevent ischaemic morbidity in this rare neonatal emergency, especially in resource-limited settings, thus improving early outcomes through timely surgical referral and management.

Patent Omphalomesenteric Duct Arising from the Caecum and Opening at the Umbilicus in a Newborn: A Case Report and Literature Review.

This case report describes a patent omphalomesenteric duct (POD) connecting the umbilicus to the caecum, rather than the classically described umbilicus-to-ileum configuration. A 10-day-old neonate presented to the emergency department with faecal discharge from the umbilical opening. Contrast fistulography through the umbilical orifice demonstrated that the patent tract communicated with the caecum. This preoperative imaging was particularly valuable, as it directly informed the surgical approach. Rather than using a standard periumbilical or lower midline incision, the surgeons performed a r

Haemoperitoneum caused by perforation of Meckel's diverticulum in a 5-year-old child.

Common complications of Meckel's diverticulum in children include gastrointestinal haemorrhage, intestinal obstruction or intussuception and diverticulitis. Here, the rare case of a perforated, non-inflamed Meckel's diverticulum causing significant haemoperitoneum in a young child, is reported. The case highlights the potential for rapid deterioration of patients with complications form vitelline duct abnormalities, for which surgical exploration should not be delayed.

Escape of the yolk sac: a hypothesis to explain the embryogenesis of gastroschisis.

Gastroschisis is a significant birth defect that in many countries has shown an increased prevalence in recent decades, and the change has affected primarily younger mothers. Despite numerous epidemiological studies no other consistent associated risk factor has been identified. In this paper we review the five main theories related to the pathogenesis of this malformation and outline the reasons why we think none fully explains the embryogenesis of gastroschisis. We briefly present some clinical observations we have made that we consider germane to the pathogenesis and outline a hypothesis th

Immunolocalization and functional analysis of Opisthorchis viverrini-M60-like-1 metallopeptidase in animal models.

Host mucins have crucial physical roles in preventing the parasitic establishment and maturation, and also in expelling the invading parasites. However, some parasites utilize mucinase enzymes to facilitate the infection. Recently, we have identified a mucinase enzyme of the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, Ov-M60-like-1, which exhibits metallopeptidase activity against bovine submaxillary mucin substrate. Here, we aimed to study the localization of this enzyme in O. viverrini and the bile duct of hamsters using immunohistochemistry and functional analysis by mucin digestion in hamsters and

A new monozoic tapeworm, Lobulovarium longiovatum n. g., n. sp. (Cestoda: Caryophyllidea), from barbs Puntius spp. (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) in the Indomalayan region.

A new caryophyllidean cestode is described from barbs Puntius spp. (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae), with P. sophore (Hamilton) as its type-host, in the Ganges and Brahmaputra river basins in India and Bangladesh, and a new genus, Lobulovarium n. g., is proposed to accommodate it. The genus belongs to the Lytocestidae because its vitelline follicles are situated in the cortex. It is typified by: (i) a peculiar ovary, which is roughly H-shaped, but with asymmetrical, irregular lobes on its ventral and dorsal sides; (ii) an extensive vitellarium formed by numerous vitelline follicles scattered throug

Patent Urachus with Patent Vitellointestinal Duct: A Rare Simultaneous Occurrence.

A large number of congenital anomalies often involve the umbilicus. This is a report of two such anomalies together in an infant. The child had a mass protruding from the umbilicus since birth. The urachus was noted to be patent on voiding cystourethrogram. On exploration, a patent vitellointestinal duct was also noted. Resection and anastomosis was done for the vitellointestinal duct, and the urachus was excised close to the dome of the bladder. Histopathological examination confirmed a tube lined by intestinal epithelium and the urachal remnant showing a dense fibrous tube‑like structure. Th
