Study of the effect of cypermethrin on the spider Polybetes phytagoricus in different energy states.

Spiders are found among the most important predators of plague insects of numerous agricultural systems. They are the most numerous representatives of the Class Arachnid and are widely distributed in numerous ecosystems. Due to multiple variables, living beings are exposed to quantitative transitions of their energetic reserves, which affect their sensitivity before the different xenobiotics. In the present study we evaluate the effect of cypermethrin (pyrethroid) on different metabolic/energetic stages of the spider Polybetes pythagoricus (Sparassidae). We firstly studied LD50 of cypermethrin

Structure of the female gonoduct of the viviparous teleost Poecilia reticulata (Poeciliidae) during nongestation and gestation stages.

Female teleosts do not have oviducts because Müllerian ducts do not develop. Instead, the caudal region of the ovary, the gonoduct, connects to the exterior. Because of the lack of oviducts in viviparous teleosts, the embryos develop in the ovary, as an intraovarian gestation, unique in vertebrates. This is the first study to address the histology of the gonoduct in a viviparous teleost. The gonoduct of Poecilia reticulata was analyzed during previtellogenesis, vitellogenesis, and gestation. The gonoduct lacks germinal cells. From deep to superficial, the wall has simple cuboidal or columnar e

Influence of nutrition during previtellogenesis on the follicular development in the Asian Tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae).

Dengue fever poses a global public health threat, with 2.5 billion people at risk of infection each year. Because the Aedes albopictus is the primary vector of dengue, it is closely monitored and handled. The efficiency of Dengue eradication is strongly dependent on understanding a female mosquito's physiological age. This study addresses key entomological issues about the impact of previtellogenic nutrition on egg production mechanisms. Ovarian development included two distinct periods: previtellogenesis and vitellogenesis. Sugar intake during previtellogenesis influences the size of the bloo

Plasma estradiol and progesterone concentrations during the female reproductive cycle in a highly placentotrophic viviparous lizard, Mabuya sp.

The neotropical genus Mabuya are obligate placentotrophic viviparous lizards, which have a short vitellogenesis that produces microlecithal oocytes and a prolonged time of gestation (9 to 10 months). The hormonal control of female reproductive activity during follicular growth and pregnancy has not been studied, although it is known that the corpus luteum can produce progesterone, but regresses early in pregnancy, being replaced in this function by the placenta. Through enzyme immunoassay (EIA) we measured the plasma concentrations of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) in females of a popula

Seasonal dynamics of plasma estradiol 17β level, gonadosomatic index, and ovarian development in female golden trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus).

Plasma estradiol 17β (E2) and gonadosomatic index (GSI) are reliable biomarkers for assessing gonadal maturity in fish. This study investigated seasonal variations in GSI and plasma E2 concentrations and their correlation with ovarian development stages in female golden trevally (Gnathanodon speciosus), a high-value fish species for marine aquaculture, over an annual reproductive cycle. The broodfish were 900 ± 200 g and 40 ± 5 cm in body weight and total length, respectively. From November to February, plasma E2 levels and GSI remained low, followed by a significant increase from March to Oct

Expression and functional analyses for estrogen receptor and estrogen related receptor of Yesso scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis.

Estrogen receptors (ERs) were known as estrogen-activated transcription factors and function as major reproduction regulators in vertebrates. The presence of er genes had been reported in Molluscan cephalopods and gastropods. However, they were considered as constitutive activators with unknown biological functions since reporter assays for these ERs did not show a specific response to estrogens. In this study, we tried characterization of ER orthologues from the Yesso scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis, in which estrogens had been proven to be produced in the gonads and involved in the spermato

Androgen-specific regulation of FSH signalling in the previtellogenic ovary and pituitary of the New Zealand shortfinned eel, Anguilla australis.

The evidence for androgens having a pivotal role in the functioning of the female reproductive axis--such as initiating puberty or vitellogenesis--is mounting. However, the use of aromatizable androgens and the tissue-specific focus of most studies often make it unclear if androgenic effects throughout the axis proceed via androgen or estrogen signalling mechanisms. In this study, we assessed the effects of 11-ketotestosterone (11KT, a non-aromatizable androgen) on the pituitary and ovary of previtellogenic (PV) freshwater eels Anguilla australis, comparing them with eels naturally undergoing

Mating-induced DNA replication factor minichromosome maintenance protein 10 promotes oogenesis in Plutella xylostella.

During oogenesis, the cell cycle becomes arrested during the DNA replication phase and resumes after mating facilitating crucial processes, including vitellogenesis and chorion formation. However, the molecular mechanisms regulating oogenesis in Plutella xylostella (L.) remain largely unexplored. Here, comparative transcriptomics analysis identified 1200 differentially expressed genes induced by mating. Among the 769 upregulated genes, minichromosome maintenance protein complex 10 (MCM10) may be a potential target for post-mating DNA replication initiation. The P. xylostella genome encodes 11

DNA methylation mediates gonadal development via regulating the expression levels of cyp19a1a in loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus.

DNA methylation-mediated transcriptional regulation has been considered to significantly impact some steroidogenic enzyme genes expression. To uncover the roles of DNA methylation on the regulation of aromatase gene expression during gametogenesis in Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, the expression profiles and cellular localization of cyp19a1a and cyp19a1b were analyzed, and the landscape of DNA methylation dynamics was investigated. We found that cyp19a1a was predominantly expressed in granulosa cells of oocytes, while cyp19a1b expression was enriched in radial glial cells of the forebrain. In ova

Female reproductive system and oogenesis in the mite Bakericheyla chanayi.

The fine structure of the female reproductive system of a cheyletid mite Bakericheyla chanayi (Trombidiformes: Cheyletidae) is investigated for the first time. This system consists of an unpaired ovary, glandular oviduct, receptaculum seminis, long cuticle-lined vagina, and genital atrium terminating in the genital opening. A separate sperm access system has not been found. The receptaculum seminis opens into the distal oviduct region, where fertilization apparently takes place. The ovary contains clusters of oogonia (cystocytes), clustered early meiotic cells, a few growing previtellogenic oo

Histopathological effects of environmental pollutants beta-HCH and methyl mercury on reproductive organs in freshwater fish.

From various environmental pollutants studied so far, specific effects on the reproductive system of small fish species Poecilia reticulata (guppy) and Oryzias latipes (medaka) were noted in the case of beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (induction of vitellogenesis and hermaphroditism, both indicative of estrogenic activity; 32 micrograms/l) and methyl mercury (impaired spermatogenesis; 1.8 micrograms/l). The latter effect was attributed to a disturbance of mitosis.

Functional characterization of a novel FpVgR: A special focus on ovarian development in Fenneropenaeus penicillatus.

Redtail shrimp Fenneropenaeus penicillatus are commercially important shrimp species. However, the aquaculture of this species is hindered by insufficient seed supply, mainly caused by frequent inadequate gonad development. The vitellogenin receptor (VgR) plays an important role in the gonad development of oviparous animals by facilitating the accumulation of vitellogenin and nutrients in the oocytes. Therefore, in this study, we cloned and functionally characterized a novel VgR from F. penicillatus (FpVgR). In general, FpVgR has a length of 3795 bp, encoding 1264 amino acid residues and encom

E75 expression in mosquito ovary and fat body suggests reiterative use of ecdysone-regulated hierarchies in development and reproduction.

The steroid hormone ecdysone controls genetic regulatory hierarchies underlying insect molting, metamorphosis and, in some insects, reproduction. Cytogenetic and molecular analysis of ecdysone response in Drosophila larval salivary glands has revealed regulatory hierarchies including early genes which encode transcription factors controlling late ecdysone response. In order to determine whether similar hierarchies control reproductive ecdysone response, we have investigated ecdysone-regulated gene expression in vitellogenic mosquito ovaries and fat bodies. Here, we identify the homologue of th

Transcriptome characterization of BPG axis and expression profiles of ovarian steroidogenesis-related genes in the Japanese sardine.

BACKGROUND: The clupeoid fishes are ecologically and commercially important fish species worldwide that exhibit a high level of population fluctuation, accompanied by alteration of reproductive traits. However, knowledge about their reproductive physiology in order to understand mechanisms underlying such population dynamics is limited. The endocrine system along with the brain-pituitary-gonadal (BPG) axis is critical for regulating reproduction. The aims of this study were to provide transcript data and genes related to the BPG axis, and to characterize the expression profiles of ovarian ster

Neuropeptide hormone bursicon mediates female reproduction in the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae).

Bursicon, a neuropeptide hormone comprising two subunits-bursicon (burs) and partner of burs (pburs), belongs to the cystine-knot protein family. Bursicon heterodimers and homodimers bind to the lucine-rich G-protein coupled receptor (LGR) encoded by rickets to regulate multiple physiological processes in arthropods. Notably, these processes encompass the regulation of female reproduction, a recent revelation in Tribolium castaneum. In this study we investigated the role of burs/pburs/rickets in mediating female vitellogenesis and reproduction in a hemipteran insect, the whitefly, Bemisia taba

The mRNA expression patterns of kisspeptins, GnRHs, and gonadotropins in the brain and pituitary gland of a tropical damselfish, Chrysiptera cyanea, during the reproductive cycle.

The sapphire devil (Chrysiptera cyanea) is a tropical damselfish that undergoes active reproduction under long-day conditions. To elucidate the physiological regulation of the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis in female sapphire devil, we cloned and characterized the genes of two kisspeptins (kiss1 and kiss2), three gonadotropin-releasing hormones (gnrh1, gnrh2, gnrh3), and the β-subunit of two gonadotropins (fshβ and lhβ) and investigated the gene expression changes during ovarian development. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses in various brain parts revealed high expression levels of

Polyamines, and effects from reducing their synthesis during egg development in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Development of eggs after a blood meal in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti involves hormonal changes, synthesis of nucleic acids, activation of the digestive enzyme trypsin, and production of the yolk protein vitellogenin. Polyamines have been implicated in growth processes and were here examined for possible involvement during egg development. The data suggest that polyamines are important for normal vitellogenesis in the mosquito. Polyamine levels and activities of ornithine decarboxylase and S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase, key enzymes in the polyamine pathway, were determined in

Is There Conservation of Vitellogenins in a Placentotrophic Lizard?

In vertebrates, the provision of nutrients to developing embryos varies widely, ranging from yolk-dependent strategies to highly specialized forms of placental nourishment. Vitellogenins (VTGs) are essential proteins for egg yolk formation in oviparous and lecithotrophic species. In contrast, in eutherian mammals, the loss of VTGs is associated with the evolution of matrotrophy (placentotrophy and lactation), where maternal nutrition via the placenta replaces the need for large yolk reserves during embryonic development. Sex steroid dynamics and mRNA transcript profiles of growth- and development-related genes during embryogenesis following induced follicular maturation in European eel.

Hormones and mRNA transcripts of maternal origin deposited in the egg may affect early embryonic development in oviparous species. These hormones include steroids, such as estradiol-17β (E2), testosterone (T), 11-ketotestosterone (11-kt), 17α,20ß-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP), and cortisol, which also play an important role in fish reproduction. In European eel, Anguilla anguilla, which does not reproduce naturally in captivity, vitellogenesis in female broodstock is commonly induced by administration of salmon or carp pituitary extract (PE) as an exogenous source of gonadotropins, while fol
