There is a growing body of research examining the efficacy of teaching a foreign language using procedures that would lead to generative learning. This study assessed the acquisition of foreign tacts and the emergence of bidirectional intraverbal responses (native-foreign and foreign-native) as a function of target stimulus preference. Three children learned to tact two sets of pictures (low- and high-preferred targets) presented in an adapted alternating-treatments design. Emergent intraverbal responses were evaluated across both directions before and after instruction. The results showed tha

INTRODUCTION: The current study examined the extent to which static and dynamic measures of vocabulary and word learning predicted response and identified poor responders to a vocabulary intervention.
METHODS: Participants were 46 preschool children in classrooms randomly assigned to complete the Story Friends intervention in two cluster-randomized efficacy trials. Children were administered a static measure of vocabulary knowledge and a dynamic assessment of explicit word learning prior to intervention. Vocabulary learning in response to intervention was assessed using a curriculum-based def

Speech comprehension is a complex process involving multiple stages, such as decoding of phonetic units, recognizing words, and understanding sentences and passages. In this study, we identify cortical networks beyond basic phonetic processing using a novel passage learning paradigm. Participants learn to comprehend a story composed of syllables of their native language, but containing unfamiliar vocabulary and syntax. Three learning methods are employed, each resulting in some degree of learning within a 12-min learning session. Functional magnetic resonance imaging results reveal that, when

Purpose The aims of the study were to explore responses of children with developmental language disorder (DLD) to rich vocabulary instruction and to identify potential factors that contribute to outcomes. Method Children with DLD participated in a language intervention embedded within a science camp. Using parent and clinician reports, standardized tests, probes, notes, and video, we derived descriptions of seven of the campers who received a vocabulary intervention that incorporated principles of rich instruction. We present them here as a case series. Results Five cases responded to the inte

Ten participants learned a miniature language (Anigram), which they later employed to verbally describe a pictured event. Using magnetoencephalography, the cortical dynamics of sentence production in Anigram was compared with that in the native tongue from the preparation phase up to the production of the final word. At the preparation phase, a cartoon image with two animals prompted the participants to plan either the corresponding simple sentence (e.g., "the bear hits the lion") or a grammar-free list of the two nouns ("the bear, the lion"). For the newly learned language, this stage induced

Twin studies suggest that expressive vocabulary at ~24 months is modestly heritable. However, the genes influencing this early linguistic phenotype are unknown. Here we conduct a genome-wide screen and follow-up study of expressive vocabulary in toddlers of European descent from up to four studies of the EArly Genetics and Lifecourse Epidemiology consortium, analysing an early (15-18 months, 'one-word stage', N(Total) = 8,889) and a later (24-30 months, 'two-word stage', N(Total)=10,819) phase of language acquisition. For the early phase, one single-nucleotide polymorphism (rs7642482) at 3p12.

Open-vocabulary multiple object tracking (MOT) aims to track arbitrary objects in the real world. Although significant progress has been achieved in object classification by leveraging the knowledge from large vision-language models, advances in data association for open-vocabulary MOT remain limited. Existing methods primarily rely on appearance cues to establish associations. However, these cues are often unreliable in the face of occlusions and ambiguous object appearances, resulting in suboptimal tracking performance in complex scenarios. In this paper, we propose a novel open-vocabulary M

Verbs and nouns vary in many ways-including in how they are used in language and in the timing of their early learning. We compare the distribution of semantic features that comprise early acquired verb and noun meanings and measure their effect on learning. First, couched in prior literature, we use semantic feature data to establish that features pattern on a hierarchy of complexity, with perceptual features being less complex than other features like encyclopaedic features. Second, given overall semantic and syntactic differences between nouns and verbs, we hypothesize that the preference f

Purpose This study examined vocabulary profiles in young cochlear implant (CI) recipients and in children with normal hearing (NH) matched on receptive vocabulary size to improve our understanding of young CI recipients' acquisition of word categories (e.g., common nouns or closed-class words). Method We compared receptive and expressive vocabulary profiles between young CI recipients (n = 48; mean age at activation = 15.61 months, SD = 4.20) and children with NH (n = 48). The two groups were matched on receptive vocabulary size as measured by the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inve

Effective vocabulary interventions for children with hearing loss, including children who are bilingual, are needed because of persistent vocabulary deficits in this population. Current instructional practices for children with hearing loss who are bilingual vary in the degree to which they incorporate the language the child uses at home. Unfortunately, there is little direct evidence as to whether bilingual or monolingual instructional practices yield greater benefits for these children. Three Spanish-English-speaking children participated in this single case adapted alternating treatments de

The aim of this longitudinal study is to evaluate 3 views on the relationship between nonword repetition and vocabulary: (i) the storage-based view that considers nonword repetition, a measure of phonological storage, as the driving force behind vocabulary development, (ii) the lexical restructuring view that considers improvements in nonword repetition as the result of vocabulary growth, and (iii) the "combined" view that assumes that both storage-based learning and lexical restructuring play a role, resulting in reciprocal relationships between nonword repetition and vocabulary during langua

Acquisition of a foreign language is a challenging task that is becoming increasingly more important in the world nowadays. There is evidence suggesting that the frontal and temporal cortices are involved in language processing and comprehension, but it is still unknown whether foreign language acquisition recruits additional cortical areas in a causal manner. For the first time, we used transcranial random noise stimulation on the frontal and parietal brain areas, in order to compare its effect on the acquisition of unknown foreign words and a sham, or placebo, condition was also included. Th

5p deletion syndrome is a rare genetic condition associated with severe speech and language problems. In general, research on speech and language skills is scarce, but there is more knowledge on phonetic and phonological skills than on lexical and grammatical skills. Until now, no studies have addressed the relationship between grammar and vocabulary. Therefore, in this study, we address aspects of this relation based on longitudinal parent-reported data (MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories) from two children with this syndrome aged 2;0-7;3, and 1;11-7;1, respectively. We exa

Purpose The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relation between lexical knowledge and phonological awareness performance of children with cochlear implants. Method Thirty children with cochlear implants (aged 5-7 years), 30 children with normal hearing matched for age, and 30 children with normal hearing matched for vocabulary size participated in the study. Children completed a vocabulary knowledge measure and three phonological awareness tasks with words that had high and low neighborhood density. Results Children with cochlear implants performed more poorly than their age-matched pee

The issue of moving vocabulary knowledge from receptive to productive mode is among the most important but less studied strands of second or foreign language learning. The present study served as an attempt to shed light on this issue by taking into account the trait of willingness to communicate as an indicator of learners' capability in promoting their lexical knowledge from receptive to productive status. It, in fact, sought to examine the role of willingness to communicate, as a type of individual difference, in the receptive/productive vocabulary knowledge of learners. The hypothesis unde

In this commentary, we describe a novel theoretical perspective on vocabulary delays in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-a perspective we refer to as auditory-visual misalignment. We synthesize empirical evidence that: (a) as a result of differences in both social and nonsocial visual attention, the auditory-visual statistics available to children with ASD for early word learning are misaligned; (b) this auditory-visual misalignment disrupts word learning and contributes to the vocabulary delays shown by children with ASD; and (c) adopting a perspective of auditory-visual misalignm

Spelling is a prerequisite to expressing vocabulary in writing. Research has shown that children with dyslexia are hesitant spellers when composing. This study aimed to determine whether the hesitant spelling of children with dyslexia, evidenced by frequent pausing, affects vocabulary choices when writing. A total of 31 children with dyslexia, mean age 9 years, were compared to typically developing groups of children: the first matched by age, the second by spelling ability. Oral vocabulary was measured and children completed a written and verbal compositional task. Lexical diversity compariso

Variance among interviewers in prior research reflects that answers provided by respondents and recorded on questionnaires varied depending on which interviewer was assigned to the respondent. For scores from the 36-mo. In-Home Longitudinal Study of Pre-School Aged Children, a special module in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, variance among interviewers was evident for the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-IIIA and clearly affected inferences made from test data. When variance among interviewers was ignored, mothers' perception of neighborhood closeness was significantly related

Sleep is a key developmental context for receptive vocabulary acquisition during early childhood, yet little is known about how sleep consolidation trajectories are associated with subsequent receptive vocabulary development. This study aimed to identify sleep consolidation trajectories by examining child, maternal, and contextual factors in preschool ages, and testing their associations with receptive vocabulary at age 5. Three sleep consolidation trajectories emerged (n = 1912) from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD, 1997/1998): rapid (9.0%), typical (44.4%), and grad

Open-vocabulary 3D scene graph generation aims to predict 3D objects and their predicates beyond the annotated label space. Compared to closed-set 3D scene graph generation methods, the open-vocabulary approach is more general, practical, and less dependent on labor-intensive ground truth annotations. Existing open-vocabulary 3D scene graph generation methods rely on learning individual object and predicate features in the representation space while ignoring higher-level 3D scene representations, leading to overfitting and suboptimal performance. In this work, we propose a hyperbolic learning-
