An experiment is described in which people with auditory hallucinations were brought into contact with each other. On an evening television talk show, a patient--diagnosed several times as having schizophrenia--talked about her voices. Four hundred and fifty people who also were hearing voices reacted to the program by telephone. A questionnaire was sent to those who responded to the television program in order to get more information about their way of coping with the voices. From those who filled out the questionnaire, 20 people were selected who explained their experiences in a clear way. A

The self-voice plays a fundamental role in communication and identity yet remains a relatively neglected topic in psychological science. As AI-generated and digitally manipulated voices become more common, understanding how individuals perceive and process their own voice is increasingly important. Disruptions in self-voice processing are implicated in several clinical conditions, including psychosis, autism, and personality disorders, highlighting the need for integrative models to explain the self-voice across contexts. However, research faces two major challenges: a methodological one (i.e.

OBJECTIVES: Special education teachers (SETs) work with students with disabilities. To get and keep these students' attention during the lesson, they may use their voices with high loudness and frequent pitch changes. These situations can be tiring for their voices and affect their vocal health. This study aimed to compare SETs' voice fatigue, reflux symptoms, and self-assessments according to their voice use habits in their work and social lives.
METHODS: A total of 208 SETs were included. A Teacher Voice Use Habits Questionnaire was developed by considering the literature, taking expert opi

INTRODUCTION: To diminish the risk of voice disorders in people who are highly dependent on their voices, such as teachers, vocal screening is important already at the beginning of such individuals' professional studies. A reliable, specified screening tool is needed. The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) has been found to differentiate normal voices from abnormal voices and to serve as a treatment outcome measure. This study investigated whether AVQI could be a screening tool in combination with auditory- and self-perception of the voice to discriminate normal from slightly poor voices.

OBJECTIVE: Aspiration can occur during swallowing. The present study investigated the feasibility of identifying aspiration risk (AR) via acoustic voice parameters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 165 patients scheduled for a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) were included. The patients were divided into two groups (AR and non-AR) based on their VFSS results. The AR group, which had ingested materials on or below the vocal folds, included 59 patients (42 males and 17 females). The non-AR group, which showed normal swallowing, included 106 patients (49 males and 57 females). The major

Complex voice assessment due to European Laryngeal Society proposals (2000) contains voice self estimation based on the Polish version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). This study focuses on the relation between voice handicap and smoking in dysphonic patients, who are using voice professionally. Thirty outpatient (25 female and 5 male, aged 40 to 55 years) voice department attendees suffering from professional dysphonia took part in this study. All patients after phoniatric examination completed the Polish version of the Voice Handicap Index (VHI). The questions concern functional, emotional

OBJECTIVES: The treatment of vocal nodules includes microsurgery, voice therapy, or a combination. Research studies have reported the benefits of voice therapy in vocal nodules; however, there is less evidence on systematic voice therapy approaches specific to vocal nodules. Hence, the current study aims to establish the short-term outcome of a systematic Eclectic Voice Therapy Program named Comprehensive Voice Habilitation Program (CVHP), modified in the treatment of vocal nodules.
METHOD: Fifteen individuals with vocal nodules in the age range of 20-55 years received the modified CVHP for 1

INTRODUCTION: In recent years cepstral analysis and specific cepstrum-based measures such as smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS) has become increasingly researched and utilized in attempts to determine the extent of overall dysphonia in voice signals. Yet, few studies have extensively examined how specific voice-source parameters affect CPPS values.
OBJECTIVE: Using a range of synthesized tones, this exploratory study sought to systematically analyze the effect of fundamental frequency (fo), vibrato extent, source-spectrum tilt, and the amplitude of the voice-source fundamental on CPPS v

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the difference between voice prostheses in terms of voice quality as experienced by patients and as judged by expert raters.
METHODS: Subjects had up to six voice prostheses placed in a random order. A voice sample was elicited for each patient on each prosthesis. Auditory perceptual voice analysis of each voice sample was undertaken by expert raters using the Sunderland Tracheoesophageal Voice Perceptual Scale (SToPS). Raters also identified the best overall prosthesis for voice for each patient. Raters were blinded to patient details, type of laryngectomy surgery,

OBJECTIVES: Newsreaders are elite vocal professionals who are highly dependent on their voice quality to meet professional commitments. Globally, the voice needs and demands of newsreaders could vary depending on technology and cultural variations. This study documents voice demands, voice needs, and vocal and nonvocal habits of professional newsreaders in Chennai, southern India through a questionnaire-based interview.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, case-control study design.
METHODS: Forty-seven professional newsreaders and 47 non-newsreaders participated in the questionnaire-based interview t

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the long-term effectiveness of voice therapy in vocal outcomes of patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) and vocal productions of patients with long-standing treatment-naïve UVFP treated with voice therapy.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
METHODS: A voice therapy protocol was applied individually in three stages. Fifteen sessions were scheduled twice a week in 70 patients with UVFP. Forty-seven patients were treated within a year of the diagnosis (group 1). The remaining patients had delayed therapy (at least 1 year after diagnosis) (gr

BACKGROUND: Apart from perceptual and acoustic parameters of a voice disorder, the patient's individual concerns are important because dysphonia can lead to relevant mental and physical stress. The purpose of our study was to analyze the relationship between patients' self-assessed concerns over different voice disorders and objective acoustic parameters of their voice.
METHODS: The Voice Handicap Index 12 (VHI-12) and the Göttingen Hoarseness Diagram (GHD) were evaluated in 226 patients with voice disorders. Individual VHI-12 items were correlated with the parameters of acoustic sound analys

Phonatory dysfunction is a frequent component of dysarthria and often is a primary feature noted in clinical assessment. But the vocal impairment can be difficult to assess because (a). the analysis of voice disorder of any kind can be challenging, and (b). the voice disorder in dysarthria often occurs along with other impairments affecting articulation, resonance, and respiration. A promising assessment tool is multi-parameter acoustic analysis, such as the Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP). Part 1 of this paper recommends procedures and standards for the acoustic analysis of voice, incl

INTRODUCTION: Voice Range Profile (VRP), or Phonetography, is a widely used method of acoustic voice assessment: it explores and documents the extreme possibilities or capabilities of the voice by producing a chart displaying the intensity dynamics as a function of the fundamental frequency range.
OBJECTIVES: In the present study VRP is used for investigating the efficacy of (isolated) functional voice therapy, and for defining the best suited VRP criteria for this purpose.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: 30 adult voice patients with complaints of chronic dysphonia (> 4 months) fitted the acceptance--a

BACKGROUND: Voice-related distress has traditionally been explained by voice content and severity; however, emerging research highlights the importance of relational, social rank and gendered dynamics. This study examined whether the gender of the hearer and perceived voice gender interacted to influence distress and whether specific hearer gender-voice gender configurations were associated with heightened distress.
METHOD: Assessments within routine clinical practice were completed by 347 adults referred to a UK specialist clinic for distressing voices between 2016 and 2024. Participants pro

OBJECTIVES: To develop an acoustic analysis protocol examining the correlations between acoustic and perceptual parameters in tracheo-oesophageal (TE) voices.
METHODS: Forty-nine laryngectomised patients with TE voice (42 M, 7 F; mean age 68 ± 9.3 years) were enrolled. Voice samples holding the sustained vowel /a/ and the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) sentences were recorded and analysed to extract the fundamental frequency (F0), the fraction of locally unvoiced frames (FLUF) and the cepstral peak prominence smoothed (CPPS). A perceptual evaluation was performed w

OBJECTIVE: There are very diverse approaches for voice therapy, and the application of voice quality used in vocal arts in voice therapy can also be seen. However, there is little research on the application of opera voice quality in voice therapy. This study explored the applications of our Opera Voice Quality Exercise in the field of voice therapy and investigated the impacts of this exercise on pitch, intensity, voice quality, and vocal ability.
METHODS: Sixty-two healthy subjects, defined as those with no discomfort in their voice and no appearance of organic lesions on the larynx via str
