Voice-associated static face image releases speech from informational masking.

In noisy, multipeople talking environments such as a cocktail party, listeners can use various perceptual and/or cognitive cues to improve recognition of target speech against masking, particularly informational masking. Previous studies have shown that temporally prepresented voice cues (voice primes) improve recognition of target speech against speech masking but not noise masking. This study investigated whether static face image primes that have become target-voice associated (i.e., facial images linked through associative learning with voices reciting the target speech) can be used by lis

Voice-Based Classification of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: Where Are We and Where Are We Going? A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal progressive motor neuron disease. People with ALS demonstrate various speech problems. SUMMARY: We aim to provide an overview of studies concerning the diagnosis of ALS based on the analysis of voice samples. The main focus is on the feasibility of the use of voice and speech assessment as an effective method to diagnose the disease, either in clinical or pre-clinical conditions, and to monitor the disease progression. Specifically, we aim to examine current knowledge on: (a) voice parameters and the data models that can, most effecti

Voice gender and the segregation of competing talkers: Perceptual learning in cochlear implant simulations.

Two experiments explored the role of differences in voice gender in the recognition of speech masked by a competing talker in cochlear implant simulations. Experiment 1 confirmed that listeners with normal hearing receive little benefit from differences in voice gender between a target and masker sentence in four- and eight-channel simulations, consistent with previous findings that cochlear implants deliver an impoverished representation of the cues for voice gender. However, gender differences led to small but significant improvements in word recognition with 16 and 32 channels. Experiment 2

Pathological Voice Detection Based on Phase Reconstitution and Convolutional Neural Network.

The nonlinear dynamic features can effectively describe the acoustic characteristics of normal and pathological voice. In this paper, the phase space reconstruction and convolution neural network are used to classify the normal and pathological voice. The phase space information of normal and pathological voice is reconstructed using delay time and embedding dimension, the one-dimensional signal is converted to a two-dimensional matrix, and the reconstructed trajectory graph sample of the signal is generated. The trajectory graph samples are used as the input of the VGG-like convolutional neur

Self-voice perception and its relationship with hallucination predisposition.

Introduction: Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a core symptom of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia but are also reported in 10-15% of the general population. Impairments in self-voice recognition are frequently reported in schizophrenia and associated with the severity of AVH, particularly when the self-voice has a negative quality. However, whether self-voice processing is also affected in nonclinical voice hearers remains to be specified. Methods: Thirty-five nonclinical participants varying in hallucination predisposition based on the Launay-Slade Hallucination Scale, listen

Acoustical recognition of laryngeal pathology using the fundamental frequency and the first three formants of vowels.

The recognition of laryngeal pathology by analysis of the voice is investigated. The fundamental frequency and the first three formants are considered. The recognition strategy is based on comparison with normal ranges calculated over 200 ordinary voices, grouped in ten age classes ranging from 20 to 70 years, for males and females. 220 test voices are studied divided into four groups: normal voices, functional dysphonia, nodules and recurrent nerve palsy. Each subject is marked according to his/her normal range. Parameters (or items) are calculated on the Interactive Laboratory System worksta

Testing the usability of a voice control system for assistive robotic arms in people with neurological conditions.

The acceptance and effective use of assistive robotic arms by people with neurological conditions strongly depend on the usability of the control interface. This study evaluated the usability of a voice control system for an assistive robotic arm in both healthy participants and individuals with neurological disorders, and compared its applicability and effectiveness with conventional joystick control. A voice control module based on automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech feedback was developed for a commercially available 6-degree-of-freedom assistive robotic arm. The system was impl

Apperceptive and Associative Forms of Phonagnosia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pronagnosia is a rare acquired or developmental pathological condition that consists of a selective difficulty to recognize familiar people by their voices. It can be distinguished into two different categories: apperceptive phonagnosia, which denotes a purely perceptual form of voice recognition disorder; and associative phonagnosia, in which patients have no perceptual defects, but cannot evaluate if the voice of a known person is or not familiar. The neural substrate of these two forms of voice recognition is still controversial, but it could concern different components

Functional connectivity within the voice perception network and its behavioural relevance.

Recognizing who is speaking is a cognitive ability characterized by considerable individual differences, which could relate to the inter-individual variability observed in voice-elicited BOLD activity. Since voice perception is sustained by a complex brain network involving temporal voice areas (TVAs) and, even if less consistently, extra-temporal regions such as frontal cortices, functional connectivity (FC) during an fMRI voice localizer (passive listening of voices vs non-voices) has been computed within twelve temporal and frontal voice-sensitive regions ("voice patches") individually defi

Atypical prosopagnosia following right hemispheric stroke: A 23-year follow-up study with M.T.

Most findings on prosopagnosia to date suggest preserved voice recognition in prosopagnosia (except in cases with bilateral lesions). Here we report a follow-up examination on M.T., suffering from acquired prosopagnosia following a large unilateral right-hemispheric lesion in frontal, parietal, and anterior temporal areas excluding core ventral occipitotemporal face areas. Twenty-three years after initial testing we reassessed face and object recognition skills [Henke, K., Schweinberger, S. R., Grigo, A., Klos, T., & Sommer, W. (1998). Biosignal Sensors and Deep Learning-Based Speech Recognition: A Review.

Voice is one of the essential mechanisms for communicating and expressing one's intentions as a human being. There are several causes of voice inability, including disease, accident, vocal abuse, medical surgery, ageing, and environmental pollution, and the risk of voice loss continues to increase. Novel approaches should have been developed for speech recognition and production because that would seriously undermine the quality of life and sometimes leads to isolation from society. In this review, we survey mouth interface technologies which are mouth-mounted devices for speech recognition, p

Sensory contribution to vocal emotion deficit in patients with cerebellar stroke.

In recent years, there has been increasing evidence of cerebellar involvement in emotion processing. Difficulties in the recognition of emotion from voices (i.e., emotional prosody) have been observed following cerebellar stroke. However, the interplay between sensory and higher-order cognitive dysfunction in these deficits, as well as possible hemispheric specialization for emotional prosody processing, has yet to be elucidated. We investigated the emotional prosody recognition performances of patients with right versus left cerebellar lesions, as well as of matched controls, entering the aco

Is this my voice or yours? The role of emotion and acoustic quality in self-other voice discrimination in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Impairments in self-other voice discrimination have been consistently reported in schizophrenia, and associated with the severity of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs). This study probed the interactions between voice identity, voice acoustic quality, and semantic valence in a self-other voice discrimination task in schizophrenia patients compared with healthy subjects. The relationship between voice identity discrimination and AVH severity was also explored. METHODS: Seventeen chronic schizophrenia patients and 19 healthy controls were asked to read aloud a list of adjective

The Glasgow Voice Memory Test: Assessing the ability to memorize and recognize unfamiliar voices.

One thousand one hundred and twenty subjects as well as a developmental phonagnosic subject (KH) along with age-matched controls performed the Glasgow Voice Memory Test, which assesses the ability to encode and immediately recognize, through an old/new judgment, both unfamiliar voices (delivered as vowels, making language requirements minimal) and bell sounds. The inclusion of non-vocal stimuli allows the detection of significant dissociations between the two categories (vocal vs. non-vocal stimuli). The distributions of accuracy and sensitivity scores (d') reflected a wide range of individual

Muscle tension dysphonia in patients who use computerized speech recognition systems.

The use of speech recognition systems as a replacement for other types of transcription systems is increasing rapidly, partly because many people are unable to use conventional keyboards as a result of upper-extremity repetitive strain injury (RSI). However, the frequent or continuous use of such systems can cause muscle tension dysphonia in some patients. The scientific literature suggests that there is an association between upper-extremity RSI and muscle tension dysphonia. We present a retrospective case series of five patients with workplace upper-extremity RSI who developed muscle tension

A Review of Voice-Based Pain Detection in Adults Using Artificial Intelligence.

Pain is a complex and subjective experience, and traditional methods of pain assessment can be limited by factors such as self-report bias and observer variability. Voice is frequently used to evaluate pain, occasionally in conjunction with other behaviors such as facial gestures. Compared to facial emotions, there is less available evidence linking pain with voice. This literature review synthesizes the current state of research on the use of voice recognition and voice analysis for pain detection in adults, with a specific focus on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learnin

[Predictive factors for speech perception in patients with cochlear implant].

Cochlear implant therapy is an epoch-making advance in artificial sensory organ transplants, but the positive effects on speech perception vary. Quantification theory type I, a multivariate analysis, was used to determine predictive factors for speech perception in patients with cochlear implants. Fifty-one postlingual deaf adults (18 male and 33 female, mean age, 53.4, mean duration of deafness, 8.6 years) were tested for speech perception three or more months after a Nucleus 22 channels cochlear implant. The cause of deafness in nine patients was labyrinthitis, ototoxicity in five, meningiti
