Modulation of the stretch reflex during volitional sinusoidal tracking in Parkinson's disease.

Sinusoidal visually-guided wrist tracking, in normal and parkinsonian subjects, was perturbed by torque transients every 90 degrees throughout the movement. Long-latency stretch reflex and volitional EMG amplitude modulations were assessed as functions of the tracking phase. Reflex modulation during tracking, both in wrist flexor and extensor muscles, was found to differ significantly between parkinsonian and normal subjects. In the parkinsonian group, the abnormality consisted of an increased reflex activity during tracking phases in which the muscle was lengthening. At these phases the refle

Disruption of volitional control in obsessive-compulsive disorder: Evidence from the Bereitschaftspotential.

In the context of controversies involving possible abnormalities in the volition and action control in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the current study examined electroencephalographic correlates of automatic and volitional brain processes involved in the genesis of spontaneous movements in individuals diagnosed with OCD. For this, the amplitudes of early and late Bereitschaftspotential (early BP and late BP) from 12 patients and 12 controls were obtained while they performed spontaneous button presses under different levels of volitional experience. In the first condition, participants

Breathing above the brain stem: volitional control and attentional modulation in humans.

Whereas the neurophysiology of respiration has traditionally focused on automatic brain stem processes, higher brain mechanisms underlying the cognitive aspects of breathing are gaining increasing interest. Therapeutic techniques have used conscious control and awareness of breathing for millennia with little understanding of the mechanisms underlying their efficacy. Using direct intracranial recordings in humans, we correlated cortical and limbic neuronal activity as measured by the intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) with the breathing cycle. We show this to be the direct result of neur

Integration of sensory, spinal, and volitional descending inputs in regulation of human locomotion.

We reported previously that both transcutaneous electrical spinal cord stimulation and direct pressure stimulation of the plantar surfaces of the feet can elicit rhythmic involuntary step-like movements in noninjured subjects with their legs in a gravity-neutral apparatus. The present experiments investigated the convergence of spinal and plantar pressure stimulation and voluntary effort in the activation of locomotor movements in uninjured subjects under full body weight support in a vertical position. For all conditions, leg movements were analyzed using electromyographic (EMG) recordings an

Metabolic efficiency of volitional and electrically stimulated cycling in able-bodied subjects.

This study compared the metabolic efficiency of volitional cycling and functional-electrical-stimulation (FES) cycling within a subject group of able-bodied individuals, with a view to further elucidating the mechanisms underlying the low efficiency of FES cycling. Previous studies estimated the metabolic efficiency of volitional cycling and anaesthetised FES cycling in able-bodied subjects, and of FES cycling in subjects paralysed by spinal cord injury. The rationale for the experimental model chosen here, i.e. non-anaesthetised able-bodied subjects, was that this lies between normal cycling

Deep Learning-Based Volition Detection and Action Potential Extraction for Fully Automated Diagnosis of Neuromuscular Disease Using Needle Electromyography Signals.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a deep learning-based volition-detection model to automate the diagnostic process and improve neuromuscular disease classification using needle electromyography (nEMG) signals. METHODS: The model was developed using 376 nEMG signals from 57 subjects and independently evaluated on an external dataset of 751 nEMG signals from 115 subjects at a single tertiary medical center. The proposed model directly processed raw nEMG signals to automatically extract volition signals (motor unit action potentials), eliminating the need for physician-dependent preprocess

Altered functional connectivity links in neuroleptic-naïve and neuroleptic-treated patients with schizophrenia, and their relation to symptoms including volition.

In order to analyze functional connectivity in untreated and treated patients with schizophrenia, resting-state fMRI data were obtained for whole-brain functional connectivity analysis from 22 first-episode neuroleptic-naïve schizophrenia (NNS), 61 first-episode neuroleptic-treated schizophrenia (NTS) patients, and 60 healthy controls (HC). Reductions were found in untreated and treated patients in the functional connectivity between the posterior cingulate gyrus and precuneus, and this was correlated with the reduction in volition from the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS), that is

Volitional modulation of beta-band EMG coherence through frequency-specific neurofeedback.

Electromyography (EMG) feedback, which records and visually presents muscle activity, has been widely employed to enhance motor control and support rehabilitation. While its effectiveness has been demonstrated across various conditions, most EMG feedback protocols have focused on modulating activity in individual muscles, with limited emphasis on promoting coordinated neuromuscular control. This study investigated the feasibility of enhancing neuromuscular coordination through feedback training designed to increase beta band (15-35 Hz) intramuscular coherence. Twenty-two healthy participants w

Body Regard as a Volitional Factor for Suicide Attempts: Implications for Ideation to Action Frameworks.

INTRODUCTION: One's relationship with, attitudes toward, and subjective experiences of the body have been theorized to contribute to self-preservation and self-destruction. These components of body regard have demonstrated associations with suicidal thoughts and behaviors but remain understudied. This study examined whether body regard acts as a moderator of the relationship between suicide ideation and attempts as well as its effect on the relationships of other established suicide risk factors. METHODS: A random sample survey of 2021 young adults was conducted assessing body regard, fearles

Volitional inspiration is mediated by two independent output channels in the primary motor cortex.

The diaphragm is a multifunctional muscle that mediates both autonomic and volitional inspiration. It is critically involved in vocalization, postural stability, and expulsive core-trunk functions, such as coughing, hiccups, and vomiting. In macaque monkeys, we used retrograde transneuronal transport of rabies virus injected into the left hemidiaphragm to identify cortical neurons that have multisynaptic connections with phrenic motoneurons. Our research demonstrates that representation of the diaphragm in the primary motor cortex (M1) is split into two spatially separate and independent sites

Effects of cognitive load and prosthetic liner on volitional response times to vibrotactile feedback.

Artificial tactile feedback systems can improve prosthetic function for people with amputation by substituting for lost proprioception in the missing limb. However, limited data exists to guide the design and application of these systems for mobility and balance scenarios. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of a noninvasive artificial sensory feedback (ASF) system on lower-limb function in the presence of a cognitive load and a liner interface. Reaction times (RTs) and accuracy of leg-movement responses to vibratory stimuli at the thigh were recorded for 12 nondisabled i

Volitional action as perceptual detection: predictors of conscious intention in adolescents with tic disorders.

Voluntary actions are accompanied by a distinctive subjective experience, so that they feel quite different from physically similar involuntary movements. However, the nature and origin of this experience of volition remain unclear. Voluntary actions emerge during early childhood, in parallel with reduction of involuntary movements. However, the available markers of the experience of volition, notably Libet's mental chronometry of intention, cannot readily be used in young children. In Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS), however, involuntary tic movements may coexist with voluntary control i

Oliceridine for postoperative pain and opioid-related complications: The intravenous oliceridine and opioid-related complications (VOLITION) prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Oliceridine is a G protein-selective μ-opioid receptor agonist with reduced β-arrestin activation that may produce fewer opioid-related adverse effects (ORAEs) than traditional opioids. The VOLITION prospective cohort study evaluated oliceridine for management of postoperative pain and evaluated ORAEs. METHODS: We enrolled 204 patients scheduled for major noncardiac surgery. Our primary aim was to quantify the proportion of patients having respiratory compromise over the initial two postoperative days. Cardiorespiratory function was continuously monitored with pulse oximetry, capn

Markers of impaired motor and cognitive volition in Parkinson's disease: Correlates of dopamine dysregulation syndrome, impulse control disorder, and dyskinesias.

INTRODUCTION: Dopaminergic therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD) can be associated with both motoric (e.g., dyskinesias) and neuropsychiatric adverse effects. Examples of the latter include Dopamine Dysregulation Syndrome (DDS) and impulse control disorder (ICD), which are separate but related behavioral/psychiatric complications of treatment in PD. Dysregulation of volition characterizes both dyskinesias and DDS/ICD; thus, we analyzed potential disease-related correlates in a large PD cohort. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 654 participants collected through the NINDS Parkinson'

Volitional and forced running ability in mice lacking intact primary motor cortex.

The coordination of various brain regions achieves both volitional and forced motor control, but the role of the primary motor cortex in proficient running motor control remains unclear. This study trained mice to run at high performance (>10,000 rotations per day or >2,700 rotations per hour) using a running wheel, and then assessed the effects of the removal of bilateral cortical areas including the primary motor cortex on volitional (self-initiated) and forced (externally driven) running locomotion. The control sham-operated group revealed a quick recovery of volitional running, reaching ha

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to Assess Covert Volitional Brain Activity in Intensive Care.

BACKGROUND: Detecting covert consciousness in unresponsive patients is challenging. Although functional magnetic resonance imaging and advanced electroencephalography paradigms can identify volitional brain activity, the limited accessibility of these technologies necessitates alternative approaches. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy may provide a portable solution in the intensive care unit. We assessed the feasibility of functional near-infrared spectroscopy with verbal motor commands to detect volitional brain activity in acute disorders of consciousness (DoC). METHODS: Functional near

The effects of volitional hyperpnea on biomarkers of respiratory muscle damage in healthy young men.

High-intensity exercise hyperpnea places substantial demands upon the respiratory muscles, but whether this causes respiratory muscle damage is unknown. We investigated respiratory muscle damage following volitional hyperpnea (equivalent to 85% of participants maximum minute ventilation produced during a maximal incremental cycling test) using a skeletal muscle damage biomarker panel. Eight healthy men (33 + 2 years) underwent 10-min trials of volitional hyperpnea and rest (control) two weeks apart. Serum was collected before and at 1, 24, and 48 h after both volitional hyperpnea and control t

Cannabinoid Modulation of Frontolimbic Activation and Connectivity During Volitional Regulation of Negative Affect.

Behavioral and brain research indicates that administration of Δ(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) alters threat perception and enhances the suppression of conditioned fear responses via modulation of the frontolimbic circuit. No prior studies, however, have examined whether THC also affects volitional forms of emotion processing such as cognitive reappraisal. The aim of the current study was therefore to examine the effects of THC on frontolimbic activation and functional connectivity during cognitive reappraisal in a sample of healthy adults. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-con

Volitional chewing with a conscious effort alters and facilitates swallowing during feeding sequence.

The key objective of mastication is to form a food bolus suitable for smooth swallowing. However, chewing is usually performed without a conscious effort. Poor bolus formation can cause pharyngeal residue and suffocation in elderly individuals with reduced swallowing function. Therefore, chewing with a conscious effort may help the bolus to more easily pass the pharynx. This study aimed to clarify the impact of mastication with a conscious effort on the feeding sequence. Subjects included 25 dentulous volunteers who were informed and provided written consent. Lateral videofluoroscopy was perfo
