Ninety-four patients with vulvovaginitis and vaginal discharge were assessed clinically and had vaginal swabs taken in an effort to establish a definite diagnosis. A high incidence of fungous infection was found while there was a surprisingly low incidence of Trichomonal vaginitis. These findings vary markedly from recent surveys in other countries (Delaha et al. (1964); Gray and Barnes, 1965; Desai et al., 1966).

Vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) is a common and underreported condition associated with decreased estrogenization of the vaginal tissue. Symptoms include dryness, irritation, soreness, and dyspareunia with urinary frequency, urgency, and urge incontinence. It can occur at any time in a woman's life cycle, although more commonly in the postmenopausal phase, during which the prevalence is close to 50%. Clinical findings include the presence of pale and dry vulvovaginal mucosa with petechiae. Vaginal rugae disappear, and the cervix may become flush with the vaginal wall. A vaginal pH of 4.6 or more su

OBJECTIVE: Isolation of Trichosporon species from vaginal secretions is a rare event, and no data are available on its pathogenic role. A case series is presented to determine the pathogenic role of Trichosporon species in vulvovaginal infections.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients seen in the W.S.U. Vaginitis Clinic in order to identify patients from whom Trichosporon species were isolated.
RESULTS: Between 1986 and 2001, a total of 13 patients had a total of 18 positive vaginal cultures for Trichosporon species. All 18 vaginal isolates were T. inkin. In general,

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in immunocompetent hosts is generally asymptomatic or may present as a mononucleosic syndrome. Its association with acute cervicitis and vulvovaginitis has rarely been reported. A 24-year-old woman presented with pelvic pain, vulvodynia, abnormal vaginal discharge, burning with urination, fatigue, fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. The vulva and cervix were red with vesicular lesions on the cervix. Genital herpes simplex infection (HSV) was suspected and valacyclovir was given orally. However, serial viral cultures performed 7 weeks apart did not isolate HSV as susp…

Vulvovaginitis is the most observed genital disease in children and adolescents and dependent from different etiologic factors. Bacteriogenic non specific infections were the most frequent cause in 275 girls. Bacteria were evident in 77.5 per cent, monilia, in 12.7 per cent and trichomonas vaginalis in 3.3 per cent. 143 cases were treated with metronidazole. All patients with trichomoniasis vaginitis became free of trichomonads. The cure rate of the anaerobic infections was 73.1 per cent. No side effects were observed.

Fifty-four premenarcheal patients (median age 5.8 years) with symptoms or signs of vulvovaginitis were studied, and the results of cultures of vaginal secretions were compared with those from an age-matched control group. Vaginal discharge was found on examination in 24 of 42 patients with a complaint of discharge, and in two of 12 patients without a complaint of discharge. Convincing evidence of bacterial or monilial infection was found in 14 of the 26 patients with discharge on examination, but in none of the 28 patients without discharge (P less than .001). In the latter group pinworm infes…

Vulvovaginitis was diagnosed in 43% of more than 1000 gynecologic-pediatric patients. The etiology, the diagnosis and the treatment of nonspecific as well as of specific infections are discussed according to the frequency of occurrence during the different hormonal (endocrinological) periods. An easy and practicable application of diagnostic and therapeutic measurements is of importance for the treatment of this most common disease in gynecologic pediatric patients.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis is the second most common vaginal infection after bacterial vaginosis. It is caused by yeasts, the vast majority of which belong to the genus Candida. Vulvovaginal candidiasis affects as many as 75 % of women during their childbearing years and 40 % of them experience recurrences. The most common etiological agent is Candida albicans, which is responsible for nearly 90 % of cases. Vulvovaginal candidiasis can be treated with topical and/or systemic antifungals while risk factors for the infection must be eliminated.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Goal was to review epidemiology, pathophysiology, and prevention of post-antibiotic Candida vulvovaginitis (VVC).
RECENT FINDINGS: Antibacterial therapy, whether systemic or locally applied to the vagina, represents the single most frequent and predictable cause or triggering mechanism of symptomatic vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). Such initiating mechanisms may precipitate sporadic or recurrent episodes of VVC. In spite of this widely recognized association, the exact mechanism whereby antibiotics of all classes cause acute exacerbation of symptomatic vaginal disease remai…
