Impact of waist circumference reduction on cardiovascular risk in treated obese subjects.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization reports that waist circumference (WC) independent of weight or body mass index (BMI) predicts cardiovascular risk. We undertook this study to determine the change of prevalence in comorbidities associated with obesity and cardiovascular risk after favorably modifying WC. METHODS: We studied 153 nondiabetic patients with obesity (BMI =30 kg/m²) and WC in women =80 cm and in men =94 cm who entered a weight control program for 2 years. We evaluated the evolution of their anthropometric measurements and metabolic status. Ninety patients (58.8%) completed

Evidence of gene-nutrient interaction association with waist circumference, cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Waist circumference (WC) is a significant indicator of body adiposity and is associated with increased mortality and morbidity of cardiovascular diseases. Although, single nutrient intake and candidate genes were previously associated with WC. Little is known about WC association with overall diet quality, genetic risk score and gene-nutrient interaction. This study aims to investigate the influence of overall diet quality and multiple WC-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms on WC. In addition to investigating gene-nutrient interaction association with WC. METHODS:

Association between waist circumference trajectories and incident non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

PURPOSE: Waist circumference (WC) is linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) incidence. However, the impact of longitudinal WC changes on NAFLD remains unclear. We investigated WC trajectories and NAFLD incidence in a large population-based cohort. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2666 participants without NAFLD, who underwent biennial check-ups for 16 years, divided into a 6-year exposure period and a 10-year event accrual period. Participants were classified into increasing and decreasing WC trajectory groups during the median 5.9-year exposure period by group-based trajectory mod

Waist-to-height ratio has a stronger association with cardiovascular risks than waist circumference, waist-hip ratio and body mass index in type 2 diabetes.

AIMS: To compare the associations between four anthropometric indices including waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip-ratio (WHR) and body mass index (BMI) and cardio-cerebrovascular events (CCBVEs) in Chinese T2DM patients. METHODS: The associations of four anthropometric measures with CCBVEs and metabolic syndrome (MetS) were compared by multiple regression model in 3108 T2DM patients. CCBVEs was defined as a history of myocardial infarction, angina, angioplasty, coronary artery bypass surgery, transient ischemic attack, ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. RESULTS:

Associations between metabolic risk factors and body mass index, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio and waist-to-hip ratio in a Chinese rural population.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Obesity plays a central role in metabolic syndrome. Obesity indexes are important in clinical work. In the present study, we sought to determine the relationships between obesity indexes and metabolic risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 11,568 participants over 35 years. Body mass index, waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) and waist-to-hip ratio were measured and calculated. To compare the predictive ability of the obesity indexes in diagnosing multiple metabolic risk factors, the areas under receiver operating characteristic curves were calcu

Waist-to-height ratio, body mass index and waist circumference for screening paediatric cardio-metabolic risk factors: a meta-analysis.

Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is superior to body mass index and waist circumference for measuring adult cardio-metabolic risk factors. However, there is no meta-analysis to evaluate its discriminatory power in children and adolescents. A meta-analysis was conducted using multiple databases, including Embase and Medline. Studies were included that utilized receiver-operating characteristics curve analysis and published area under the receiver-operating characteristics curves (AUC) for adiposity indicators with hyperglycaemia, elevated blood pressure, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome and other c

Is Waist-to-Height Ratio a Better Obesity Risk-Factor Indicator for Puerto Rican Children than is BMI or Waist Circumference?

OBJECTIVE: Puerto Rican children could have a higher prevalence of obesity, compared to US children or even to US Hispanic children. Obese youths are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular conditions, such as hypertension. Although BMI provides a simple, convenient measurement of obesity, it does not measure body fat distribution, associated with mortality and morbidity. Waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) have been suggested to estimate obesity health risks. This study aimed to explore the association of a single blood pressure reading with 3 different obesi

Relationships between gray matter, body mass index, and waist circumference in healthy adults.

Obesity and overweight are often defined by the body mass index (BMI), which associates with metabolic and cardiovascular disease, and possibly with dementia as well as variations in brain volume. However, body fat distribution and abdominal obesity (as measured by waist circumference) is more strongly correlated with cardiovascular and metabolic risk than is BMI. While prior studies have revealed negative associations between gray matter tissue volumes and BMI, the relationship with respect to waist circumference remains largely unexplored. We therefore investigated the effects of both BMI an

Neck circumference as a measure of central obesity: associations with metabolic syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome beyond waist circumference.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: To investigate the relationship of neck circumference (NC) to metabolic syndrome (MetS) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and whether it adds information to that provided by waist circumference. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of a population sample of 1,912 men and women, aged 55.1 +/- 12 years, representative of Turkish adults. MetS was identified based on modified criteria of the ATP-III, OSAS when habitual snoring and episodes of apnea were combined with another relevant symptom. RESULTS: NC measured 36.7 (+/- 3.5) cm in the total sample. It was significant

Changes in obesity and waist circumference in children and parents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted daily behaviours. We compared the annual change in obesity prevalence before and during the pandemic in children and parents. Participants were recruited from TARGet Kids! in Canada and followed prospectively. Each participant had at least one body mass index (BMI) measure before and during the pandemic. Marginal logistic models with piecewise functions were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for the association between year and obesity prevalence before (2015-2020) and during the pandemic (2020-2023). Among children (n = 1,163), in the 5 years pre-pan

WHO guidelines on waist circumference and physical activity and their joint association with cancer risk.

OBJECTIVE: Low body fat and high physical activity levels are key lifestyle factors in cancer prevention, but the interplay of abdominal obesity and physical activity on cancer risk remains unknown. We explored individual and joint associations of waist circumference and physical activity with cancer risk. METHODS: Using UK Biobank data (n=315 457), we categorised individuals according to WHO guideline thresholds for waist circumference and self-reported physical activity levels. Multivariable-adjusted Cox regression was used to estimate HRs and 95% CIs of total cancer. The reference group co

Influence of waist circumference measurement site on the cardiometabolic risk factors in Korean adults.

BACKGROUND: Waist circumference (WC) has been recognized as a simple anthropometric measure of abdominal obesity and associated health risk. We compared WC values at five measurement sites, and examined whether measurement sites influence the relationships between WC and cardiometabolic risk in Korean adults. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, participants included 180 men and 176 women (age: 30-60 years, BMI: 18.5-30.0 kg/m2) who underwent a regular health examination between 2021 and 2022. WC was measured at the following sites; lowest rib, superior border of the iliac crest, midpoint

The triglyceride-waist circumference index is a valid biomarker of metabolic syndrome in African Americans.

BACKGROUND: The hypertriglyceridemia waist (HTGW) phenotype is associated with visceral adiposity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Since the cut points for abdominal obesity and hypertriglyceridemia, differ for different race groups, investigators have developed the product of triglycerides (TG) and waist circumference (WC) as the TG.WC index. We compared this TG.WC index to the TG:HDL-C ratio in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study to predict metabolic syndrome (MetS) in African Americans (A

Performance of waist circumference and proposed cutoff levels for defining overweight and obesity in Nigerians.

BACKGROUND: Waist circumference (WC) is a simple tool for measuring central obesity in routine clinic settings. Gender- and ethnic-specific optimal cutoff points for WC are encouraged for populations lacking such data. OBJECTIVES: To derive WC cutoff values, predictive of overweight and obesity in Nigerians and to evaluate the performance of currently recommended values. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Apparently, healthy urban dwellers from six cities spread across Nigeria were selected for this cross-sectional study. Biophysical profiles such as blood pressure and anthropometric indices were measure

Assessing factors related to waist circumference and obesity: application of a latent variable model.

BACKGROUND: Because the use of BMI (Body Mass Index) alone as a measure of adiposity has been criticized, in the present study our aim was to fit a latent variable model to simultaneously examine the factors that affect waist circumference (continuous outcome) and obesity (binary outcome) among Iranian adults. METHODS: Data included 18,990 Iranian individuals aged 20-65 years that are derived from the third National Survey of Noncommunicable Diseases Risk Factors in Iran. Using latent variable model, we estimated the relation of two correlated responses (waist circumference and obesity) with

Longitudinal increases in waist circumference are associated with HIV-serostatus, independent of antiretroviral therapy.

BACKGROUND: The relative contributions of the different classes of antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV infection per se, and aging to body shape changes in HIV-infected patients have not been clearly defined in longitudinal studies. METHODS: Since September 1999, men enrolled in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study have undergone measurements of body mass index (BMI) and body circumferences at each semi-annual visit. The effect of HIV-serostatus and cumulative exposure to the three major ART classes on changes in anthropomorphic measurements occurring between 1999 and 2004 among HIV-infected and H

Relationship between waist circumferences measured at the umbilical level and midway between the ribs and iliac crest - a solution to the debate on optimal waist circumference standards in the diagnostic criteria of metabolic syndrome in Japan.

AIM: The waist circumference (WC) cut-off values in the diagnostic criteria of metabolic syndrome (MetS) established in Japan (Japanese criteria) differ from those established by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) for Asians (IDF criteria). METHODS: To settle this contradiction, a cross-sectional study of Japanese aged 20-65 years was performed. After excluding subjects suffering from significant diseases other than those constituting MetS, excessive drinkers, and regular smokers, 835 males and 1,304 females were examined. WC was measured at the umbilical level (UWC) and midway betwe
