Are the Physical Environments of Treatment Centres Meeting Recommendations for Patient-Centred Care? Perceptions of Haematological Cancer Patients.

The physical environment of a treatment centre may impact the well-being of patients and their perceptions of care. Outpatients with haematological cancer may be in contact with the treatment centre over long periods and could be particularly affected. This study aimed to identify haematological cancer patients' perceptions of supportive design elements in the hospital they attended and associations with self-reported mood or well-being. Outpatients from three large metropolitan hospitals in Australia were mailed a self-report questionnaire and responded to statements about the treatment centr

Implications of the ionizing radiations regulations for typical nuclear medicine departments.

The application of the 1985 Ionizing Radiations Regulations and Approved Code of Practice to a typical Nuclear Medicine Department has been considered. References to the Regulations are given so that their implications in a given department may be examined. The radiopharmacy, radioisotope dispensary and injection room will need to be Controlled Areas. It will also be necessary to designate Controlled Areas if radiopharmaceuticals are injected in imaging rooms or on wards. Waiting rooms will need to be Controlled Areas. The area around individual patients will, however, not need to be Controlle

Measles spread in medical settings: an important focus of disease transmission?

During the period September 1981 to August 1985, we investigated every reported case of measles in Oklahoma to confirm the diagnosis, to determine the source, and to identify contacts to prevent spread of the disease. During this time, 33 serologically and/or epidemiologically confirmed cases were investigated. Nine (27%) persons acquired measles in a medical office or clinic waiting area. Eight of these recalled direct face-to-face contact with a source. An additional six (18%) cases were associated with exposure to these medically acquired cases, for a total of 45% that were the direct or in

Pain management policies and reported practices in Swiss emergency departments: a national survey.

BACKGROUND: Acute pain is the most common complaint of patients presenting to emergency departments (EDs). Effective pain management is a core ED mission, but numerous studies have pointed to insufficient pain treatment or oligoanalgesia. According to a 1997 national survey in Swiss EDs, a validated pain scale was used in only 14%, an analgesia protocol in <5%, and 1.1% had a nurse-initiated pain protocol. Since then, numerous societal and health care factors have led to improved ED pain care. The aim of this study was to assess the state of ED pain management in Switzerland. METHODS: Hosp

Assessment of Overheating Risk in Gynaecology Scanning Rooms during Near-Heatwave Conditions: A Case Study of the Royal Berkshire Hospital in the UK.

Hospital buildings in the UK are at particular risk to rising summer temperatures associated with climate change. Balancing the thermal needs of patients, staff, and visitors is a challenging, complex endeavour. A case study of the ultrasound area of the Royal Berkshire Hospital's Maternity and Gynaecology building is presented, where temperatures were measured for 35 days in waiting areas, staff offices, and ultrasound scanning rooms, aiming to assess the overheating risk posed to occupants. Local external temperature measurements were used for comparison whereby determining the indoor-outdoo

Natural ventilation for the prevention of airborne contagion.

BACKGROUND: Institutional transmission of airborne infections such as tuberculosis (TB) is an important public health problem, especially in resource-limited settings where protective measures such as negative-pressure isolation rooms are difficult to implement. Natural ventilation may offer a low-cost alternative. Our objective was to investigate the rates, determinants, and effects of natural ventilation in health care settings. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The study was carried out in eight hospitals in Lima, Peru; five were hospitals of "old-fashioned" design built pre-1950, and three of "modern

Decoding Sepsis: A Technical Blueprint for an Algorithm-Driven System Architecture.

This paper presents a scalable, serverless machine learning operations (ML Ops) architecture for near real-time sepsis detection in Emergency Department (ED) waiting rooms. Built on Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud environment, the system processes HL7 messages via MuleSoft, using Lambda for data handling, and SageMaker for model deployment. Data is stored in Aurora PostgreSQL and visualized in on-premise Tableau™. With 99.7% of HL7 messages successfully processed, the system shows strong performance, though occasional downtime, code set mismatches, and peak execution times reveal areas for opt

Evaluating Options and Ethics in Pediatric Dentistry due to Declining Access to Hospital Operating Rooms.

AbstractPediatric dentists rely on access to hospital operating rooms for safe, effective, and humane delivery of dental care. The children who benefit most from dental treatment in a hospital operating room are those who are very young, have dental anxieties or phobias, are precommunicative or noncommunicative, need extensive or invasive dental treatments, or have special healthcare needs. Diminishing access to hospital operating rooms for pediatric dental treatment has become an escalating problem in contemporary times. Financial barriers, hospital costs, reimbursement rates, health insuranc

Ambient RF-EMF exposure in surgical operating rooms from telecommunication antennas and Wi-Fi sources.

In recent years, many studies have characterized ambient exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) in various environments. In hospitals, operating rooms accommodate many professionals for extended periods, often with waiting times during which mobile devices connected to wireless networks are used. These conditions could increase workers' exposure during surgical procedures. This study aimed to characterize ambient RF-EMF exposure during surgical operations in 15 operating rooms at the General University Hospital and the Perpetuo Socorro Hospital in Albacete (Spain). Measurem
