Influence of Backpack Carriage and Walking Speed on Muscle Synergies in Healthy Children.

Four to five muscle synergies account for children's locomotion and appear to be consistent across alterations in speed and slopes. Backpack carriage induces alterations in gait kinematics in healthy children, raising questions regarding the clinical consequences related to orthopedic and neurological diseases and ergonomics. However, to support clinical decisions and characterize backpack carriage, muscle synergies can help with understanding the alterations induced in this condition at the motor control level. In this study, we investigated how children adjust the recruitment of motor patter

Effects of sex and walking speed on the dynamic stiffness of lower limb joints.

Fast walking may require a non-uniform change of dynamic stiffness among lower limb joints to deal with this daily task's demands. The change of dynamic joint stiffness may be distinct between females and males. This study aimed to test for differences in dynamic stiffness among lower limb joints in response to increased walking speed in males and females. Thirty-five participants walked in two randomized conditions: self-selected speed and fast speed (25% greater than the self-selected speed). Dynamic stiffnesses of the ankle, knee, and hip were calculated as the linear slope of the moment-an

Impact of Improvement in Walking Speed on Hospitalization and Mortality in Females with Cardiovascular Disease.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the principal cause of death in women. Walking speed (WS) is strongly related with mortality and CVD. The rate of all-cause hospitalization or death was assessed in 290 female outpatients with CVD after participation in a cardiac rehabilitation/secondary prevention program (CR/SP) and associated with the WS maintained during a moderate 1 km treadmill-walk. Three-year mortality rates were 57%, 44%, and 29% for the slow (2.1 ± 0.4 km/h), moderate (3.1 ± 0.3 km/h), and fast (4.3 ± 0.6 km/h) walkers, respectively, with adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of 0.78 (p = 0.24)

The influence of traumatic transfemoral amputation on metabolic cost across walking speeds.

BACKGROUND: Recent literature indicates equivalent costs of walking can be achieved after a transtibial amputation when the individual is young, active, and/or has extensive access to rehabilitative care. It is unknown if a similar cohort with transfemoral amputation can also achieve lower metabolic costs of walking than previously reported. OBJECTIVE: Compare metabolic cost in individuals with a transfemoral amputation to controls and to the literature across a range of walking speeds. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: A total of 14 individuals with a unilateral transfemoral amputati

Influence of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on walking kinematics and standing balance of older adults who differ in walking speed.

The purpose was to determine the impact of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on measures of walking kinematics and standing balance of healthy older adults who were stratified into two groups based on differences in the distance walked during the 6-min test of walking endurance. Regression models were developed to explain the variance in the 6-min distance and to assess the predictive power of balance metrics to categorize the 26 older adults (72 ± 5.4 yrs) as either slow or fast walkers. Walking kinematics were measured during 6- and 2-min walk tests that were performed with

The walking speed reserve in low disabled people with multiple sclerosis: Does it provide greater insight in detecting mobility deficits and risk of falling than preferred and fast walking speeds?

The extent of an increase from a preferred walking speed (PWS) to a fast walking speed (FWS) is defined as the walking speed reserve (WSR). The WSR is unique as it reflects an individual's ability to increase their walking speed on demand. The primary objective of this study was to examine whether the WSR was more advantageous than the PWS and FWS in terms of reflecting mobility deficits and risk of falling associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). The patient group included 235 people with MS (PwMS) (139 women) with a mean age of 43.6 (SD = 13.6) years. The WSR, PWS and FWS (m/s) were: 0.47 (S

Assessing walking speed in persons with a lower-limb amputation: Test-retest reliability of the 10-m walk test.

BACKGROUND: Preferred walking speed (PWS), maximal walking speed (MWS), and walking speed reserve (WSR)-the difference between MWS and PWS-can be easily obtained from the 10-m walk test (10MWT) to assess walking ability and function. However, their test-retest reliability has not been determined in persons with unilateral lower-limb amputation (LLA). OBJECTIVES: To determine the reliability of the PWS, MWS, and WSR obtained from the 10MWT in persons with LLA. STUDY DESIGN: Test-retest with a 48- to 120-h interval between test days. METHODS: Test-retest relative and absolute reliability was

Effects of walking speeds and durations on plantar skin blood flow responses.

BACKGROUND: Various walking speeds and durations in daily life cause different levels of ischemia of plantar tissues. It is unclear what walking speeds and durations significantly affect plantar tissue viability and risks for foot ulcers in non-diabetics and diabetics. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to establish the normal response of plantar skin blood flow to different speeds and durations of walking exercise in non-diabetics that would be needed to quantify impaired responses in diabetics. METHOD: Laser Doppler flowmetry was used to measure plantar skin blood flow of the first metat

Effects of visual focus and gait speed on walking balance in the frontal plane.

We investigated how head position and gait speed influenced frontal plane balance responses to external perturbations during gait. Thirteen healthy participants walked on a treadmill at three different gait speeds. Visual conditions included either focus downward on lower extremities and walking surface only or focus forward on a stationary scene with horizontal and vertical lines. The treadmill was positioned on a platform that was stationary (non-perturbed) or moving in a pattern that appeared random to the subjects (perturbed). In non-perturbed walking, medial-lateral upper body motion was

A study to investigate the walking speed of elderly adults with relation to pedestrian crossings.

Elderly pedestrians are particularly at risk on the roads. The objective of this study was to investigate the walking speed of elderly adults and determine if it allows the safe clearance of pedestrian crossings. The increasing elderly population and high fatality rates of this age group on Irish roads necessitate this investigation. Fifty-two community-dwelling adults over the age of 65 years completed a 10-meter walk test. Acceleration and steady-state walking speed were accounted for. Twenty traffic-light-controlled pedestrian crossings were analyzed within a 1 kilometer radius of 4 day car

Optimizing exoskeleton assistance to improve walking speed and energy economy for older adults.

BACKGROUND: Walking speed and energy economy tend to decline with age. Lower-limb exoskeletons have demonstrated potential to improve either measure, but primarily in studies conducted on healthy younger adults. Promising techniques like optimization of exoskeleton assistance have yet to be tested with older populations, while speed and energy consumption have yet to be simultaneously optimized for any population. METHODS: We investigated the effectiveness of human-in-the-loop optimization of ankle exoskeletons with older adults. Ten healthy adults > 65 years of age (5 females; mean age: 72 ±
