Evaluation of open field movement organization and spatial orientation in 5xFAD mice.

Wandering behavior or becoming lost in familiar environments is frequently observed during progression of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and may be a possible prodromal symptom of the disease but also is extremely dangerous for those suffering from this neurodegenerative disease. The accumulation of amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) has been implicated in the neuropathology and cognitive deficits associated with AD. This study investigated changes in open field movement organization in a 5xFAD mouse model of AD that and the deposition of amyloid pathology. Mouse open field behavior was collected under dark

Managing the behavioral problems of dementia in the home.

The majority of persons with dementia are cared for in the home by family and friends. The goals of treatment in this setting are to maximize the quality of life of the demented person and minimize burdens on the caregiver. Behavioral problems are common with dementia and can lead to significant caregiver burden. Behaviors that are most common or most serious to caregivers include behaviors related to memory disturbances, restlessness and agitation, catastrophic reactions, day/night disturbances, delusions, wandering, and physical violence. A general method for clinicians to manage these probl

Modulating mind-wandering in dysphoria.

Depression is associated with significant difficulty staying "in the moment" as the mind tends to wander away from current activity to focus instead on personal concerns. Mind-wandering (MW) may in some instances be a precursor for depressive rumination, a thinking style believed to confer vulnerability to the likelihood and extent of depression. Thus, MW may be not only a consequence but also a cause of low mood. Identifying a paradigm that could modulate MW, particularly in depressed individuals, would allow future studies to test whether elevated rates of MW causally drive cognitive-affecti

Association between pain and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in older adults with dementia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) are core and highly detrimental symptoms of dementia. Previous research has suggested a potential association between pain and BPSD, but pieces of evidence are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association between pain and BPSD in patients with dementia. METHODS: Seven databases were searched from inception to February 2024, including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and WanFang Data. Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies were

Pain in people with dementia is a significant contributor to increased professional caregiver burden: results of an observation study.

AIM: To investigate the association between the presence of neuropsychological symptoms, professional caregiver burden and pain intensity. METHODS: Eleven neuropsychiatric symptoms reportedly associated with caregiver burden which are included within the PainChek® pain assessment tool were identified: aggressiveness, inappropriate behavior, distressed, verbally offensive, confusion, restlessness, pacing and wandering, crying, screaming, altered sleep and resisting care. A caregiver burden score based on binary scoring of the presence of these indicators was calculated (summative score range f

Activity changes and marked stereotypic behavior precede Abeta pathology in TgCRND8 Alzheimer mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is not only characterized by cognitive decline and neuropathological changes, but also by non-cognitive behavioral symptoms like restlessness, sleep disturbance, and wandering. These symptoms are categorized in the "Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia" (BPSD). We investigated transgenic and wildtype mice of an APP transgenic mouse model of AD (TgCRND8) with respect to 24 h activity and spontaneous home cage behavior at 30, 60, 90 and 120 days of age. At all test days, transgenic and wildtype animals differed significantly with respect to activity patterns

Strong winds reduce foraging success in albatrosses.

Knowledge of how animals respond to weather and changes in their physical environment is increasingly important, given the higher frequency of extreme weather recorded in recent years and its forecasted increase globally.1,2 Even species considered to be highly adapted to extremes of weather, as albatrosses are to strong winds,3,4,5 may be disadvantaged by shifts in those extremes. Tracked albatrosses were shown recently to avoid storms and the strongest associated winds.6 The drivers of this response are so far unknown, though we hypothesize that turbulent storm conditions restrict foraging s

Agitation Prevalence in People With Dementia in Australian Residential Aged Care Facilities: Findings From Machine Learning of Electronic Health Records.

Using a suite of artificial intelligence technologies, the current study sought to determine the prevalence of agitated behaviors in people with dementia in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) in Australia. Computerized natural language processing allowed extraction of agitation instances from the free-text nursing progress notes, a component of electronic health records in RACFs. In total, 59 observable agitated behaviors were found. No difference was found in dementia prevalence between female and male clients (44.1%), across metropolitan and regional facilities (42.1% [SD = 17.9%]), or

Awareness of being: a computational neurophenomenological model of mindfulness, mind-wandering, and meta-attentional control.

Mindfulness has established psychological benefits, such as stress reduction and emotional regulation; however, the underlying computational mechanisms, particularly in relation to mind-wandering, remain unclear. This study aimed to present a hierarchical recurrent neural network-based agent model grounded in the free energy principle to explore these processes within the framework of allostasis. The model integrates interoceptive, proprioceptive, and exteroceptive predictive processing, which minimizes the variational free energy throughout past and future contexts. Simulations of the resting

[Incidence and importance of "non-cognitive" symptoms in dementia of the Alzheimer type: productive psychotic symptoms, depressive disorders and behavioral disorders].

A semi-structured interview was administered to the closest relatives of 50 patients with presenile or senile dementia of the Alzheimer type. The disturbances most frequently reported were: wandering/pacing (56%, cumulative percentage), aggressive behavior (44%) and - significantly related to more severe stages of dementia - apathy/loss of drive (58%), eating disturbances (46%) and disturbances of the sleep-waking cycle (32%). Depressive symptoms were observed in 58% of the patients, preferentially in the early stages of illness with preserved insight. Signs of paranoid delusions (46%), delusi

Treatment of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementias with psychopharmaceuticals: a review.

Behavioral and psychological symptoms represent common complications in patients with different types of dementia. Predominantly, they comprise psychosis, agitation and mood disorders, disinhibited behavior, impairment of the sleep and wakefulness rhythm, wandering, perseveration, pathological collecting, or shouting. Their appearance is related to more rapid progression of the disease, earlier institutionalization, use of physical restraints, and higher risk of mortality. Consequently, appearance of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia leads to higher costs of care provided and g

[Dementia patients and levels of care: do symptoms of the illness affect the grading?].

OBJECTIVE: As the levels of care within long-term nursing care regulations are defined according to limitations in performing fundamental activities of daily living, the extent to which medically diagnosed cognitive, emotional and behavioral dementia symptoms are taken into account in the grading, should be investigated. METHOD: 390 patients with mild to moderate dementia from the Mid-Franconia region, were included into the IDA ("Initiative Demenzversorgung in Allgemeinmedizin") study by specially trained general practitioners. The GPs had diagnosed dementia and noted the accompanying signs

Treatment of the agitation of late-life psychosis and Alzheimer's disease.

In older as well as younger people, antipsychotic medication is commonly used to treat psychoses. In clinical practice, antipsychotic medication is also used to control severe behavioral disturbances such as agitation, wandering, self-mutilation, as well as assaultiveness. Neuroleptic and non-neuroleptic drug treatments are used to control severe agitation and disruptive behavior. Among typical neuroleptics, very low doses (e.g., 0.25 mg of haloperidol 1-4 times per day) may be effective and limit the development of severe extrapyramidal reactions. Recent experience suggests that the atypical

Adverse physiological and psychological effects of screen time on children and adolescents: Literature review and case study.

UNLABELLED: A growing body of literature is associating excessive and addictive use of digital media with physical, psychological, social and neurological adverse consequences. Research is focusing more on mobile devices use, and studies suggest that duration, content, after-dark-use, media type and the number of devices are key components determining screen time effects. Physical health effects: excessive screen time is associated with poor sleep and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, obesity, low HDL cholesterol, poor stress regulation (high sympathetic aro

Silver Alerts: A Notification System for Communities with Missing Adults.

As the U.S. population ages, the prevalence of dementia will grow and communities will face the problem of older adults wandering or becoming lost. Silver Alert systems are programs designed to locate missing older adults with dementia or other mental disabilities. Such programs have been initiated in all but five states. Data collection for these programs is often minimal or incomplete. Social workers should be involved in prevention, follow up and education with caregivers, community members and law enforcement officers. When reviewing Silver Alert policy, special attention must be given to

An administrator's perspective on mental health in assisted living.

Administrators of 94 assisted living facilities in Michigan completed a 19-item survey about the extent of mental health problems of residents and how such problems were addressed. In 45 facilities more than half of the residents were reported to be cognitively impaired. The two most common problems were dementia and depression. The most common problematic behaviors were resistance to care and wandering. Two-thirds of the facilities conducted some type of mental health evaluation at admission, and two-thirds conducted evaluations as needed. The most common treatment barriers were patient refus

Altered hexamerin regulation in prepupal Trichoplusia ni pseudoparasitized by Chelonus sp. near curvimaculatus.

Adult female wasps of species in the subfamily Cheloninae inject an egg, venom, polydnavirus and other materials into the host egg during oviposition. Hosts then exhibit precocious expression of the metamorphic developmental program, but then further development by the precocious prepupa is suppressed. These effects occur in truly parasitized hosts (those that contain a live endoparasite larva) as well as in pseudoparasitized hosts (that do not contain a live endoparasite). We report here that during the precocious prepupal stage, the hexamerins BJHSP1 and BJHSP2 persist in the hemolymph of ps
