Splenic Torsion From a Wandering Spleen.

Wandering spleen is a unique condition defined as a hypermobile spleen with a sole attachment to its vascular pedicle. The most common complication is torsion of the spleen, resulting in a surgical emergency. Early diagnosis and prevention of splenic infarction are the mainstays of treatment to help preserve immunologic function. We report a case of torsion of the wandering spleen in a 23-year-old active-duty male with a prior childhood history of duodenal atresia. His abdominal examination demonstrated a palpable midline mass, which was confirmed by CT abdomen and pelvis to be a wandering spl…

Wandering spleen with splenic arteriovenous torsion.

Splenic arteriovenous torsion causes splenomegaly and ischemic necrosis of the spleen. The recommended treatment for wandering spleen with hypersplenism is considered to be splenectomy.

Torsion of wandering spleen: radiological findings.

Wandering spleen (or ectopic spleen) is a rare anomaly resulting from hyperlaxity or even absence of the ligaments that hold the spleen in its anatomical position. Although more frequently a congenital condition, it can also be acquired. Torsion of the vascular pedicle is its potential main complication with subsequent development of splenic infarct. In this paper we will describe the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, treatment options and radiological findings which allow the diagnosis of this entity.

Wandering spleen: Report of two cases.

Wandering spleen is a rare clinical condition which presents with a variety of symptoms with abdominal pain, abdominal mass, and acute abdomen. It may also remain silent until diagnosed by a routine imaging study. Treatment options may differ depending on the presenting clinical picture. Herein we present two cases of wandering spleen treated by splenectomy, with one of them admitted to our emergency clinic with torsion.

Wandering spleen presenting as recurrent pancreatitis.

INTRODUCTION: A wandering spleen occurs when there is a laxity of the ligaments that fix the spleen in its normal anatomical position. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a wandering spleen in a 20-year-old female who presented with recurrent pancreatitis and underwent a laparoscopic splenectomy. DISCUSSION: The presentation of a wandering spleen varies from an asymptomatic mass to splenic infarct with an acute abdomen. Its correct diagnosis relies mostly on imaging studies. Treatment consists of performing either splenectomy or splenopexy. CONCLUSION: The diagnosis of wandering spleen can …

Volvulus of a wandering spleen in a pediatric patient.

Wandering spleen is a rare condition in children that is often caused by the loss or weakening of the splenic ligaments. Its clinical presentation is variable; 64% of children with wandering spleen have splenic torsion as a complication. A 13-year-old boy who had been showing abdominal pain in the hypogastric region accompanied by vomit and an enormous tumefaction in the suprapubic region came to our observation. Considering the ovoid morphology at ultrasound exam, the echostructure and the marked reduction of parenchymal vascularization, suspicion for torsion of an ectopic spleen arose. Ultra…

Torsion of the wandering spleen with intestinal obstruction.

Wandering spleen is a relatively rare condition and may be complicated by intestinal obstruction or abnormal intestinal rotation. Herein, we report a case where these three conditions appeared concomitantly. An 18-year-old woman with an intellectual disability was admitted to the hospital because of vomiting and fever. The patient's abdomen was distended. Computed tomography revealed a dilated small intestine, a swollen spleen located in the lower abdomen, as well as twisting and swirling of the splenic artery and vein. The patient was diagnosed with torsion of the wandering spleen and emergen…

A torted wandering spleen: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: A torted wandering spleen is a rare clinical occurrence with fewer than 500 cases reported and an incidence of less than 0.2%. It is brought about through laxity of the gastrosplenic and splenorenal ligaments; however, the precise aetiology remains unknown. It can prove to be a diagnostic challenge with high mortality if misdiagnosed. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 27-year-old woman of Arabic ethnicity, who complained of a short history of severe abdominal pain with the background of recurrent abdominal pain and vomiting. An abdominal computerized tomography scan re…

Torsion of a wandering spleen: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Wandering spleen is a rare entity in child. It is generated by laxity or failure of development of spleen ligaments causing the migration of the spleen from its normal anatomical site to another abdominal or pelvic location. It can be congenital or acquired. The most dangerous complication is the occurrence of torsion of the spleen around its pedicle. aim: Report of a new observation and present the diagnostic, treatment and outcome aspects of torsion of ectopic spleen. CASE: We report the case of a 17 years old girl who was admitted for an acute abdomen pain and fever. Clinical e…

The wandering spleen: an unusual case of thrombocytopenia.

Thrombocytopenia is a common laboratory finding in current medical practices. The workup of thrombocytopenia can be challenging with numerous causes that can be included in the differential diagnosis. Thrombocytopenia can be due to bone marrow hypoproliferation, peripheral destruction, or sequestration. This paper presents a case of isolated thrombocytopenia in a young female and discusses the causes of thrombocytopenia.

Wandering spleen with torsion and gastric volvulus.

Wandering spleen, defined as a spleen without its usual peritoneal attachments, is a rare entity, particularly in children. It usually occurs in those aged 20 to 40 years, and most cases occur in women. Patients usually become symptomatic when torsion of the splenic pedicle occurs. Gastric volvulus, like wandering spleen, is also related to anomalies of intraperitoneal visceral attachments. However, cases of wandering spleen associated with gastric volvulus are rare. We report a case of wandering spleen with torsion and gastric volvulus. The patient was a 4-year-old girl who presented with acu…
