Waste-free chemistry of diazonium salts and benign separation of coupling products in solid salt reactions.

Gas-solid and solid-solid techniques allow for waste-free and quantitative syntheses in the chemistry of diazonium salts. Five techniques for diazotations with the reactive gases NO(2), NO and NOCl are studied. Two types are mechanistically investigated with atomic force microscopy (AFM) and are interpreted on the basis of known crystal packings. The same principles apply to the cascade reactions that had been derived from one-step reactions. Solid diazonium salts couple quantitatively with solid diphenylamine and anilines to give the triazenes. Azo couplings are achieved with quantitative yie

Optimization of Biodiesel Production from Waste Cooking Oil Using a Construction Industry Waste Cement as a Heterogeneous and Reusable Catalyst.

Biodiesel, which is a blend of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), has garnered significant attention as a promising alternative to petroleum-based diesel fuel. Nevertheless, the commercial production of biodiesel faces challenges due to the high costs associated with feedstock and the non-recyclable homogeneous catalyst system. To address these issues, a solid catalyst derived from construction industry waste cement was synthesized and utilized for biodiesel production from waste cooking oil (WCO). The catalyst's surface and physical characteristics were analyzed through various techniques, incl

A zero-waste approach to Sarcodia suiae valorization: Recycling aquaculture wastes and carbon dioxide for biostimulant, biofertilizer, and bioenergy production.

Aquaculture waste and carbon dioxide (CO2) are a global concern. Sarcodia suiae cultivated in outdoor photobioreactors (PBRs) using shrimp aquaculture wastewater and CO2 from biogas demonstrates significant benefits. It boosted biomass by 18.72 % with nearly 100 % removal of COD, inorganic nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and 41-89 % organic N and P removal from AWW. Sarcodia aqueous extracts were biostimulants for promoting mung bean and rice seedling growth, and Sarcodia remnants/shrimp pond bottom sludge generated a biogas yield of 457.07 L/kg-VS methane (CH4)/day. Biogas provides renewable en

Lactate: More Than Merely a Metabolic Waste Product in the Inner Retina.

The retina is an extension of the central nervous system and has been considered to be a simplified, more tractable and accessible version of the brain for a variety of neuroscience investigations. The optic nerve displays changes in response to underlying neurodegenerative diseases, such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease, as well as inner retinal neurodegenerative disease, e.g., glaucoma. Neurodegeneration has increasingly been linked to dysfunctional energy metabolism or conditions in which the energy supply does not meet the demand. Likewise, increasing lactate levels h

Feasibility study on the utilization of coal mining waste for Portland clinker production.

CMWs (coal mine wastes) as the waste products of coal exploitation or washing plants are a source of pollution that generates waste management problems, especially those that are very old and without a known owner. CMW chemical composition indicates that it contains SiO2-Al2O3-Fe2O3 in such percentages that it can be used in the production of Portland cement clinker, which can lead to potential savings in clinker production, not only in raw material but also in fuels if the CMW has a minimum calorific value and has not suffered self-combustion. After characterization of different CMWs from min

A simple novel route for porous carbon production from waste tyre.

In this research, waste tyre rubber was used for activated carbon production with a novel route by modified physo-chemical approach. Potassium hydroxide and carbon dioxide were selected as chemical and physical activating agents, respectively and the process was carried out without carbonization under inert atmospheric conditions. The experiments were designed by applying the central composite design (CCD) as one of the subsets of response surface methodology (RSM). The effects of activation temperature (550-750 °C), activation time (15-75 min), impregnation ratio of KOH/rubber (0.75-3.75) and

Value added eco-friendly products from tannery solid wastes.

Chrome shavings are the prominent solid wastes in tanning industry. Since chromium is known for its toxicity, the disposal of chrome shavings has been identified as a serious problem from the environmental point of view. At present, the popular utilization mode for chrome shavings is the manufacture of leather boards and related products. But this does not offer complete utilization of chrome shavings. Moreover, return per ton of chrome shavings is low if used for leather board production. In view of this, two processes have been developed to offer an alternative and better solution for the di

[Utilization of mycelial waste of antibiotic production in the technology of kilned construction materials].

At present the main part of the mycelial waste of antibiotic production is collected in sludge lagoones, discarded to the sewage treatment system or burnt. The mycelial waste is one of the causes of the environmental pollution. It contains a significant quantity of valuable substances, such as lipids, carbohydrates, proteins and amino acids. The inorganic portion of the waste includes the compounds of calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, silicium and phosphorus. The levels of the above substances in the mycelial waste allow using it as organic mineral additives in making expanded clay aggregate g

Partial replacement of cement with port dredging waste in the production of coating mortars.

The accelerated expansion of the cement industry, driven by the growing housing demand in urban centers, has resulted in increased consumption of raw materials and elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Simultaneously, the disposal of dredged material from ports and navigation channels presents an environmental concern, as improper management can significantly harm marine ecosystems. This study investigates the use of port dredging waste (PDW) as a supplementary cementitious material in coating mortars acting as a filler material, promoting packing and nucleation. Two types of cement were us

Quorum-driven microbial consortium for Bioplastic production from agro-waste.

Microbial consortia have high relevance in natural environments. Here we present the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from agro-industrial residues by a synthetic interkingdom consortium formed by the saprotrophic fungus Ophiostoma piceae CECT 20146, which encodes a wide range of lignocellulolytic enzymes, and a natural PHA producer, Pseudomonas putida KT2440. Two agro-industrial residues were utilized: Brewer's Spent Grain (BSG) as a carbon/nitrogen source and biofilm scaffold and waste cooking oil (WCO) as a carbon source for PHA synthesis. Through biochemistry, microscopy, and omic

Life cycle of bioethanol production from blends of different food waste.

Food waste offers a potential source for bioethanol production, but productivity depends on the chemical composition of the raw materials and the processes involved. However, assessment of the environmental sustainability of these processes is often absent and can be carried out using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. This study aimed to perform an LCA on bioethanol production from mixtures of different wastes, including tubers, fruits, and processed foods, focusing on the gate-to-gate phase. The inventory included a standard scenario and an optimized scenario, which eliminated dryi

Production of solid acid catalyst using waste cigarette filters for esterification.

Cigarette filters were utilized as carbon source for the production of solid carbon acid catalysts. In this study, the process of carbonization and simultaneous sulfonation via hydrothermal treatment was employed. The catalysts were prepared by mixing cigarette filters and sulfuric acid at temperatures of 100, 150, and 190 °C for durations ranging from 2 to 8 h. It was observed that the highest conversion of oleic acid occurred when the catalyst was synthesized at 190 °C for 4 h. The optimized conditions for the esterification reaction using this catalyst included an oleic acid to methanol mol

Improvement of ethanol and 2,3-butanediol production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by ATP wasting.

BACKGROUND: "ATP wasting" has been observed in 13C metabolic flux analyses of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a yeast strain commonly used to produce ethanol. Some strains of S. cerevisiae, such as the sake strain Kyokai 7, consume approximately two-fold as much ATP as laboratory strains. Increased ATP consumption may be linked to the production of ethanol, which helps regenerate ATP. RESULTS: This study was conducted to enhance ethanol and 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) production in the S. cerevisiae strains, ethanol-producing strain BY318 and 2,3-BDO-producing strain YHI030, by expressing the fructose
