Positive impact of dietary water on in vivo epidermal water physiology.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The importance of water in human physiology is well known, also for skin functionality. This study was conducted to assess the effects of dietary water on epidermal skin hydration in healthy females. METHODS: Thirty-four healthy females (mean 24.5 ± 6.34 years old) were selected and characterized according to their dietary daily habits, by a previously validated Food Frequency Questionnaire. For 1 month, these subjects were asked to add 2 L/day of water to their regular dietary habits. Measurements took place at day D0, D15, and D30, and involved general variables (body we

The Influence of Ectoine on the Skin Parameters Damaged by a CO2 Laser.

Ectoine is a substance produced by extremophiles and is naturally used by them as protection against adverse environmental conditions in which they live. Scientific contributions discuss its excellent effect through cosmotropic properties, prevention of secondary messenger release in cells, and transcription factors. The influence on the lipid layer of the cell membrane and its preventive effect as a UV filter were also demonstrated. What is more, its anti-oxidative effect was established. Ectoine works as an immunostimulant and also has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. These attr

Skin barrier in rosacea.

Recent studies about the cutaneous barrier demonstrated consistent evidence that the stratum corneum is a metabolically active structure and also has adaptive functions, may play a regulatory role in the inflammatory response with activation of keratinocytes, angiogenesis and fibroplasia, whose intensity depends primarily on the intensity the stimulus. There are few studies investigating the abnormalities of the skin barrier in rosacea, but the existing data already show that there are changes resulting from inflammation, which can generate a vicious circle caused a prolongation of flare-ups a

Transepidermal water loss related to volar forearm sites in humans.

The aim of this study was to demonstrate differences in human skin transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in vivo related to site on volar forearm. Fourteen healthy volunteers entered the study and seven sites were tested. After randomization of both forearm and measure order, TEWL measurements were performed using the Servo Med Evaporimeter. TEWL values next to the wrist were found statistically greater than on the other sites. Hence wrist region should preferably be excluded from TEWL measurements on forearm.

An evaluation of mechanical and biophysical skin parameters at different body locations.

BACKGROUND: Skin is the largest organ in the body, representing an important interface to monitor health and disease. However, there is significant variation in skin properties for different ages, genders and body regions due to the differences in the structure and morphology of the skin tissues. This study aimed to evaluate the use of non-invasive tools to discriminate a range of mechanical and functional skin parameters from different skin sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of 15 healthy volunteers was recruited following appropriate informed consent. Four well-established CE-marked non

Review of methods used for quantifying excess water in over-hydrated skin using evaporimetry.

BACKGROUND: Advances in diapers and skin barrier products are often aimed at reducing water penetration of the skin to prevent diaper dermatitis and evaporimetry has commonly been measured to quantify excess water in the skin. The aim of this study was to critically review the methods used to measure water vapour flux density (WVFD) using evaporimetry in order to identify a standardised methodology. METHODS: We used MEDLINE (1980-2008) and hand searching to identify published papers that used evaporimetry to measure WVFD when the skin has been exposed to water/saline/urine. We compared the pa

In vivo hydration and water-retention capacity of stratum corneum in clinically uninvolved skin in atopic and psoriatic patients.

Hydration and the water-retention capacity of stratum corneum have been investigated in uninvolved psoriatic and atopic skin and compared with that of healthy controls. Thirty-three subjects of either sex and matched for age entered the study. The subjects were free from all signs of skin disease and skin dryness. Hydration was evaluated by means of transepidermal water loss and skin capacitance measurements. Water-retention capacity was investigated using the plastic occlusion stress test. Atopic skin differed significantly from uninvolved psoriatic and control skin which had a reduced water

Water balance, electrolytes and acid-base balance in extremely premature infants.

There are few reported studies of water balance and electrolyte abnormalities in extremely low birthweight (ELBW) infants weighing < 1000 g nursed in high humidity. We retrospectively analyzed water balance, electrolyte and acid-base balance in 100 ELBW infants, of whom 72 were appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and 28 were small for gestational age (SGA). They were cared for in closed incubators at almost full ambient humidity. Fluid intake was restricted to 50-60 mL/kg on the first day of life and was adjusted to maintain normal serum Na concentration. Weight loss in AGA and SGA infants w

Differences in Temperature Changes in Premature Infants During Invasive Procedures in Incubators and Radiant Warmers.

Premature infants tend to lose heat quickly. This loss can be aggravated when they have received an invasive procedure involving a venous puncture. This research uses crossover design by conducting 2 intervention tests to compare 2 different treatments on the same sample. This research involved 2 groups with 18 premature infants in each. The process of data analysis used a statistical independent t test. Interventions conducted in an open incubator showed a p value of .001 which statistically related to heat loss in premature infants. In contrast, the radiant warmer p value of .001 statistical

Investigation of water bonding status of normal and psoriatic skin in vivo using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.

Psoriasis affects more than 125 million people worldwide, and the diagnosis and treatment efficacy evaluation of the disease mainly rely on clinical assessments that could be subjective. Our previous study showed that the skin erythema level could be quantified using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and the hemoglobin concentration of most psoriatic lesion was higher than that of its adjacent uninvolved skin. While the compromised epidermal barrier function has been taken as the major cause of clinical manifestation of skin dryness and inflammation of psoriasis, very few methods can be

Collodion baby dehydration: the danger of high transepidermal water loss.

We describe transepidermal water loss (TEWL) measurements in a collodion baby suffering from severe hypernatraemic dehydration and hypothermia, who required intravenous fluid therapy in a special incubator. The TEWL values 4 days after birth were abnormally high compared with normal infants of the same age. The TEWL measurements returned towards normal within the first month, in parallel with the improvement of both the skin signs and the electrolyte and fluid balance.

Lipids in the American Alligator stratum corneum provide insights into the evolution of vertebrate skin.

In terrestrial vertebrates, the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum (SC), provides a durable and flexible interface with the environment and is comprised of corneocytes embedded in lipids. However, the morphology and lipid composition of the SC varies throughout evolutionary history. Because crocodilians and birds phylogenetically bracket the Archosaurian clade, lipid composition in crocodilian SC may be compared with that of birds and other vertebrates to make inferences about broader phylogenetic patterns within Archosaurs while highlighting adaptations in vertebrate skin. We id

Going Beyond Ceramides in Moisturizers: The Role of Natural Moisturizing Factors.

Xerosis is experienced by almost everyone at some time in their lives and the foundation of management of dry skin (both consumer- and healthcare professional--directed) rests on the use of moisturizers. Given the wide range of available moisturizers, counseling patients about selecting the optimum moisturizer for their individual situation relies on knowledge of ingredients and formulations. Traditionally, the main focus for many moisturizers centered on the core functional and structural role of ceramides within the epidermal barrier. However, while a key aspect of transepidermal water

An Exploratory Study of the Effects of the pH of Synthetic Urine on Skin Integrity in Healthy Participants.

BACKGROUND: Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) develops from prolonged exposure of skin to urine and/or stool and represents a common complication in older adults, reducing the quality of life. Increased pH is an important etiologic factor of IAD; however, the relationship between urinary pH and skin barrier disruption remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine the effects of synthetic urine (s-urine) at various pHs on transepidermal water loss (TEWL), stratum corneum hydration (SCH), and skin surface pH. METHODS: S-urine solutions (pH 5.0-9.0) were applied to the

Effect of glove occlusion on the skin barrier.

Wet work tasks are the most common exposures leading to occupational irritant contact dermatitis. Use of liquid-proof gloves is recommended when performing wet work, however, gloves may also contribute to impairment of the skin barrier and development of irritant contact dermatitis. The aim of this study is to review the literature on the effects of glove occlusion on skin barrier function. The PubMed database was searched up to 1 February 2015 for articles on the association between glove occlusion and skin barrier function, including human studies only and in English. Only experimental studi

The epidermal barrier.

A mature epidermis is an effective barrier which prevents dehydration from the loss of body water, poisoning from the absorption of noxious substances, and systemic infection from invading surface microorganisms. The epidermal barrier resides within the most superficial layer of the skin, the stratum corneum. In utero the fetus has no need for a skin barrier, so the stratum corneum does not start to develop until around 24 weeks' gestation. After 24 weeks there is a steady increase in the number of epidermal cell layers and in epidermal thickness, although it is not until around 34 weeks' gest

Comparability and reproducibility of the results of water loss measurements: a study of 4 evaporimeters.

A study was made of the comparability and reproducibility of the results of measurements of water loss, both in vitro and in vivo, using 4 ServoMed Evaporimeters (3 single-probe and 1 double-probe instrument). The optimum time for recording transepidermal water loss (TEWL) after the initial application of the probe to the skin (in vivo), and the best technique for optimizing the accuracy of measuring TEWL were determined. An evaporation device with a constant level of water loss was constructed for in vitro studies. The volar aspect of the right forearm skin of one subject was used in vivo. Bo

Stratum Corneum Ceramide Abnormalities in Atopic Dermatitis: Pathophysiology and Implications for Disease Management.

The stratum corneum, as the outermost layer of the skin, functions as a critical barrier that maintains cutaneous hydration and systemic homeostasis. Among its structural lipids, ceramides constitute the most abundant and diverse component. These molecules are essential for the formation of lamellar structures that secure barrier integrity. Increasing evidence has established that abnormalities in stratum corneum ceramides are not merely epiphenomena but fundamental contributors to the pathophysiology of atopic dermatitis (AD). In this review, we provide an overview of the structure, biosynthe
