Effect of reservoir flushing on downstream river water quality.

The effect of short-term reservoir flushing on downstream water quality in the Geum River, Korea was studied using field experiments and computer simulations. The reservoir release was increased from 30 to 200 m(3)/s within 6 h for the purpose of this experiment. The flushing discharge decreased the concentrations of soluble nitrogen and phosphorus species considerably, but the experimental results revealed a negative impact on organic forms of nutrients and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). A dynamic river water quality model was applied to simulate the river hydraulics and water quality varia

Trihalomethane levels in home tap water and semen quality.

BACKGROUND: Trihalomethanes (THMs) are byproducts of drinking water chlorination whose effects on semen quality have not been previously studied in humans. METHODS: We examined the relationship of THMs to semen quality in 157 healthy men from couples without known risk factors for infertility. Total THM (TTHM) levels were assigned based on water utility measurements taken during the 90 days preceding semen collection. We analyzed continuous semen parameters in relation to total and individual THMs, adjusting for potential confounders by using repeated measures analyses. RESULTS: TTHM level w

Tirane, Albania: survey on drinking water quality and facilities.

To develop a realistic model of the situation, a study was carried out in four different socioeconomic and hygienic areas of Tirane, namely in the modern and historical centre as well as in the intermediate and peripheral areas. In each area interviewers from the city's Public Health Directorate, contacted randomly, door-to-door, the residents, submitting a questionnaire and collecting water samples at the same time. Our data show relevant differences regarding distribution and quality of drinking water between the centre and peripheral areas. One third of water samples revealed the presence o

Spatio-temporal surface water quality assessment for an alluvial plain: insight from combined water quality index and partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Surface water quality underpins sustainable development and public health. However, rapid urbanization and fertilizer-intensive agriculture have increasingly degraded surface waters worldwide. To rigorously evaluate surface water suitability for drinking and irrigation and to identify the dominant driving factors, 112 surface water samples were collected from four representative hydrological periods (wet, average-flow, dry, and pre-flood) in an alluvial plain. Temporally, hydrochemical characteristics exhibited a pronounced dilution-flushing-enrichment pattern, with dominant dilution during th

A Metagenomic Approach to Evaluating Surface Water Quality in Haiti.

The cholera epidemic that occurred in Haiti post-earthquake in 2010 has resulted in over 9000 deaths during the past eight years. Currently, morbidity and mortality rates for cholera have declined, but cholera cases still occur on a daily basis. One continuing issue is an inability to accurately predict and identify when cholera outbreaks might occur. To explore this surveillance gap, a metagenomic approach employing environmental samples was taken. In this study, surface water samples were collected at two time points from several sites near the original epicenter of the cholera outbreak in t

The influence of extensive vegetated roofs on runoff water quality.

The influence of extensive sedum-moss vegetated roofs on runoff water quality was studied for four full scale installations located in southern Sweden. The aim of the study was to ascertain whether the vegetated roof behaves as a sink or a source of pollutants and whether the age of a vegetated roof influences runoff quality. The runoff quality from vegetated roofs was also compared with the runoff quality from non-vegetated roofs located in study areas. The following metals and nutrients were investigated: Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Pb, Zn, NO3-N, NH4-N, Tot-N, PO4-P, and Tot-P. The results show

[Quality of the water and public health in the Central American isthmus].

As of December 1970 the population of the Central American Isthmus was 16,436,723; 6,225,447 (37.9%) urban and 10,210,946 (62.1%) rural. Of the urban population, 63.3%, or 3,964,611 had water in the home, while 2,283,836 (36.7% had no adequate water supply. The problem is even worse in the rural population where only 732,150 inhabitants (7.17%) had water in the home; the rest, 9,500,000 were using water from contaminated rivers, streams, wells, etc. These low percentages do not meet the standards proposed at Punta del Este, Uruguay in 1961 of providing drinking water to 70% of the urban popula

Microbes as Resources to Remove PPCPs and Improve Water Quality.

The inadequate removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) by traditional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) poses a significant environmental and public health challenge. Residual PPCPs find their way into aquatic ecosystems, leading to bioaccumulation in aquatic biota, the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and contamination of both water sources and vegetables. These persistent pollutants can have negative effects on human health, ranging from antibiotic resistance development to endocrine disruption. To mitigate these risks, there is a growing interest

Effect of sediment on fluvial phosphorus and aquatic water quality.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential element in the aquatic environment that is closely linked to river sediment dynamics. The effect of sediment on P has been widely recognized, but has been limited to specific scenarios without considering its relation to water quality management under different sediment scenarios. Water samples (1139 samples) collected from eight rivers across China were analyzed and a consistent comet-shaped relationship between sediment and dissolved P (DP), the component most directly impacting aquatic ecosystems, was observed. It indicated that in rivers with high sediment co

Microbial quality and nutritional aspects of Norwegian brand waters.

The microbiological quality of the five leading brands of Norwegian bottled still waters was investigated. All brands were free for the enteric indicator organisms and named pathogens whose absence is demanded in current quality directives. The relatively nutrient-poor agar R₂A revealed large heterogeneous bacterial populations which grew slowly, or not at all, on clinical media specified for use in substrate-utilization approaches to identification. The main approach used for identification was cultivation of microbes on R₂A, followed by amplification and partial sequencing of 16S rDNA genes.

Impact of residential hot water heater type and water stagnation on drinking water quality within a full-scale premise plumbing system.

Premise plumbing systems (PPSs), which are connected to the main drinking water distribution system via service lines, are a primary source for human exposure to chemical and microbial contaminants through inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact. To understand the occurrence and distribution of drinking water contaminants in these systems, this study utilized a full-scale PPS and monitored operational parameters and water quality changes for 26 weeks. The PPS contained natural gas- and electric-powered instantaneous and tank hot water heaters (HWHs), each supplying separate sinks and a single

Low-level N-nitrosamine occurrence in disinfected drinking water and relationships with standard water quality indicators.

N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a probable human carcinogen that can be formed in drinking water treatment systems as a byproduct of chloramination and chlorination. Occurrence of NDMA and other N-nitrosamines in the United States has been previously assessed using a variety of techniques, but few studies have been able to distinguish between concentrations above and below suggested screening levels (e.g., 0.7 ng L-1 for NDMA). This study evaluated the presence of NDMA and seven other N-nitrosamines in two drinking water distribution systems in the northeastern United States (n = 42 locations

Moderate heating of waterline improves dental unit water quality by activating bactericidal properties of tap water.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Daily flushing of dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) with fresh tap water for an adequate duration each morning before dental procedures is essential to prevent healthcare-associated infections. However, the bacterial reduction achieved by flushing alone is often temporary and may be insufficient. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the management practices of clinically used DUWLs and identify effective measures for improving water quality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The bactericidal free residual chlorine concentration (FRCC) and heterotrophic plate counts (HPCs) in air tu

Ensuring microbial water quality for on-site water reuse: Importance of online sensors for reliable operation.

A growing number of cities and regions are promoting or mandating on-site treatment and reuse of wastewater, which has resulted in the implementation of several thousand on-site water reuse systems on a global scale. However, there is only limited information on the (microbial) water quality from implemented systems. The focus of this study was on two best-in-class on-site water reuse systems in Bengaluru, India, which typically met the local water quality requirements during monthly compliance testing. This study aimed to (i) assess the microbial quality of the reclaimed water at a high tempo

Insight into mixed chlorine/chloramines conversion and associated water quality variability in drinking water distribution systems.

Mixed chlorine/chloramines are common in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs); however, their transformation and impact on chemical and microbial characteristics are not well understood. We systematically investigated water quality parameters associated with mixed chlorine/chloramine species conversion in 192 samples (including raw, finished, and tap water) collected throughout the year in a city in East China. Various chlorine/chloramine species (free chlorine, monochloramine [NH2Cl], dichloramine [NHCl2], and organic chloramines [OC]) were detected in both chlorinated and chloraminate

Four buildings and a flush: Lessons from degraded water quality and recommendations on building water management.

A reduction in building occupancy can lead to stagnant water in plumbing, and the potential consequences for water quality have gained increasing attention. To investigate this, a study was conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on water quality in four institutional buildings. Two of these buildings were old (>58 years) and large (>19,000 m2), while the other two were new (>13 years) and small (<11,000 m2). The study revealed significant decreases in water usage in the small buildings, whereas usage remained unchanged in the large buildings. Initial analysis found that residual chlo

Emerging contaminants of public health significance as water quality indicator compounds in the urban water cycle.

The contamination of the urban water cycle (UWC) with a wide array of emerging organic compounds (EOCs) increases with urbanization and population density. To produce drinking water from the UWC requires close examination of their sources, occurrence, pathways, and health effects and the efficacy of wastewater treatment and natural attenuation processes that may occur in surface water bodies and groundwater. This paper researches in details the structure of the UWC and investigates the routes by which the water cycle is increasingly contaminated with compounds generated from various anthropoge
