Synergistic mechanism of steam blanching and freezing conditions on the texture of frozen yellow peaches based on macroscopic and microscopic properties.

Freezing and blanching are essential processing steps in the production of frozen yellow peaches, inevitably leading to texture softening of the fruit. In this study, the synergistic mechanism of stem blanching, freezing conditions (-20°C, -40°C, -80°C, and liquid nitrogen [-173°C]), and sample sizes (cubes, slices, and half peaches) on macroscopic properties of texture, cellular structure, and ice crystal size distribution of frozen yellow peaches were measured. Blanching enhanced the heat and mass transfer rates in the subsequent freezing process. For nonblanched samples, cell membrane integ

Cervical tooth wear and sensitivity: erosion, softening and rehardening of dentine; effects of pH, time and ultrasonication.

BACKGROUND: Cervical dentine wear is commonly observed and may be associated with dentine hypersensitivity. Erosion is thought to play a part in both conditions but compared to enamel has been little studied in dentine. AIM: The aims of these studies in vitro were to: (i) determine the effects of citric acid on dentine at different pH values and over time; (ii) measure the depth of dentine demineralisation or softening using ultrasonication; (iii) determine whether softened dentine can be remineralised or rehardened using artificial saliva. METHODS: Groups of flat dentine specimens prepared

Local Skin Cooling as an Aid to the Management of Patients with Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema and Fibrosis of the Arm or Breast.

Based on preliminary observations that topical cooling appeared to soften lymphedematous and fibrotic tissue, our goal was to systematically and quantitatively evaluate this effect. For this purpose, topical cooling was used as part of treatment of lymphedematous and fibrotic skin of women with breast cancer related lymphedema (BCRL) and localized fibrosis. Skin tissue hardness was assessed via the force required to indent skin to 4 mm (F4.0) and 1.3 mm (F1.3) and skin water was assessed by measurements of tissue dielectric constant (TDC). Measurements were done before cooling, after cooling,

Comparison of four softening agents used on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded nail biopsies with inflammatory disease.

Obtaining high-quality sections of the nail plate poses a significant challenge to histopathology technicians world over. Nail is a heavily keratotic hard tissue that tends to split or tear while sectioning when processed and embedded in a routine manner. Many agents such as phenol, alcohol, and thioglycolate have been tried for the purpose of softening a variety of experimental materials. However, there is no clear consensus on any single agent. The study was conducted with the aim of evaluating and comparing the role of various compounds as softening agents for nail biopsies with inflammator

Failure wear mechanism and blade width effect of TBM center cutter rotation in water-bearing weakly cemented sandstone.

Weakly cemented sandstone (WCS) in western China is rich in clay minerals. Water‑induced softening tends to induce rotation failure of TBM central hobs, which further causes eccentric tip damage and edge chipping and remarkably reduces tunnelling efficiency. Aiming at the poorly understood sliding‑contact mechanism of central hobs under rotation‑failure conditions in WCS strata, steel‑needle scratching tests combined with XRD and SEM micro‑characterization were carried out to investigate the apparent morphological evolution of hob tips, and a corresponding empirical correlation was fitted. The

Effects of water nanodroplets on skin moisture and viscoelasticity during air-conditioning.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: In air-conditioned rooms, dry air exacerbates some skin diseases, for example, senile xerosis, atopic dermatitis, and surface roughness. Humidifiers are used to improve air dryness, which often induces excess humidity and thermal discomfort. To address this issue, we investigated the effects of water nanodroplets (mist) on skin hydration, which may increase skin hydration by penetrating into the interstitial spaces between corneocytes of the stratum corneum (SC) without increasing air humidity. METHODS: We examined biophysical parameters, including skin conductance and tra

Modulation of the lens water content changes the stiffness of the ex-vivo non-decapsulated bovine lenses.

PURPOSE: To determine whether modulation of lens water content can alter the stiffness of the ex vivo bovine lens which have a similar stiffness profile to the presbyopic human lens. METHODS: Bovine lenses cultured in isotonic artificial aqueous humor (AAH) were initially subjected to either MRI imaging using a clinical 3T scanner or a spin test to obtain baseline measurements of water content and shear modulus, respectively. Lenses were then exposed to either hypotonic or hypertonic stress to swell or shrink lenses, respectively, or isotonic AAH + ouabain or high extracellular potassium (AAH

Combined calcium chloride and heat treatment delays softening of fresh-cut jackfruit by activating the Ca2+ signaling-NAC29 transcriptional regulatory module.

Fresh-cut jackfruit is highly susceptible to rapid softening during storage, representing a major quality deterioration that limits its commercial distribution. This study elucidated the potential mechanisms by which combined calcium chloride and heat treatment (CH) mitigates softening in fresh-cut jackfruit. CH treatment mitigated cell wall degradation, inhibited the accumulation of water-soluble pectin (WSP), and delayed the degradation of chelator-soluble pectin (CSP) and cellulose, while significantly suppressing the activities of key cell wall-degrading enzymes, including polygalacturonas

Pectin modifications and the role of pectin-degrading enzymes during postharvest softening of Jonagold apples.

This study aimed at understanding softening in Jonagold apple (Malus×domestica Borkh.) fruits, by investigating pectin modifications and the evolution of pectin-modifying enzymes during postharvest storage and ripening. Jonagold apples were harvested at commercial maturity and stored at different temperatures and controlled atmosphere conditions for 6 months, followed by exposure to ambient shelf life conditions (20 °C under air) for 2 weeks. The composition of the pectic material was analysed. Furthermore, the firmness and the ethylene production of the apples were assessed. Generally, the ma

Influence of aluminium on the effect of 1 alpha (OH)D3 on renal osteodystrophy.

The influence of aluminium in dialysate on the effects of 1 alpha (OH)3 on hemodialyzed hypocalcemic patients with end-stage renal failure, was studied during a 24- to 42-month period. 51 hypocalcemic patients were divided into two groups; group 1 consisted of 28 patients who were dialyzed using dialysate prepared from reverse osmosed water; the 23 patients in group 2 used dialysate prepared from softened water. Aluminium concentration in the dialysate used for group 1 was less than the detectable limit (10 micrograms/l) in twelve times determinations, while that for group 2 was 23.1 +/- 9.2 m

A novel simple technique for en face endothelial observations using water-soluble media -'thinned-wall' preparations.

A new, easily applicable technique providing en face preparations for light microscopy observations of the rat aorta and human thin wall arteries is described here. The major steps of the technique include attachment of the fixed and flattened vessel with the endothelium face down on a glass slide, covered with a water-soluble adhesive medium; drying and softening the vessel wall with another water-soluble medium; removal of the adventitia and most of the media; detaching the layer by placing the glass slide in water; and final attachment of the layer with the endothelium upwards. On such 'thi

Lignin-Rich Tyloses Regulate Competitive Water-Ethanol Codiffusion and Suppress Hyperswelling in Oak Wood.

White oak is favored over red oak for alcoholic-barrel cooperage because of its lignin-rich tyloses. To reveal how tyloses regulate diffusion and dimensional stability in oak wood, this study investigated the absorption and swelling of white and red oak immersed in ethanol solutions (0-100%). Codiffusion revealed competitive interactions: water expedited ethanol motion, while ethanol hindered water diffusion by disrupting the cooperative hydrogen-bond network. Water mainly penetrated polysaccharides, whereas ethanol preferentially was associated with lignin. In white oak latewood, radial swell

Effect of bittern immersion on textural properties and water-holding capacity in beef.

Hard meat has low market value; hence, we used bittern as a novel meat tenderizer for bovine M. semitendinosus, one of a hard muscle. We investigated the effects of beef immersion in bittern, a basic solution primarily comprising MgCl2, on textural properties and water-holding capacity. Muscle samples from M. semitendinosus of Holstein steers were immersed in seven different solutions (RO, NaCl, MgCl2, red wine, pH 3, bittern, and pH 8) and heated at 80°C for 5min. The pH of the beef and immersion solutions, water-holding capacity, and maximum load of the meat were measured. Although beef imme

Bonding wood with uncondensed lignins as adhesives.

Plywood is widely used in construction, such as for flooring and interior walls, as well as in the manufacture of household items such as furniture and cabinets. Such items are made of wood veneers that are bonded together with adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins1,2. Researchers in academia and industry have long aimed to synthesize lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives using biomass-derived lignin, a phenolic polymer that can be used to substitute the petroleum-derived phenol3-6. However, lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives are less attractive to ply

Research on Dynamic Characteristics and Modulus Attenuation Evolution of Rubber Particle Loess.

Loess in seasonally frozen regions is prone to water-induced softening and dynamic instability, posing severe challenges for geotechnical engineering. Rubber particles, as sustainable waste-tire-derived material, offer potential for loess improvement. This study aims to elucidate the dynamic characteristics and modulus attenuation evolution of rubber particle-loess mixtures under multi-factor coupling effects. Dynamic triaxial tests were conducted to investigate the influences of rubber content, particle size, moisture content, and freeze-thaw cycles. Results reveal that the optimal mix is 5%

Collective Intermolecular Motions of Water in Sodium Montmorillonite.

By tracking temperature-induced changes in vibrational spectra, inelastic neutron scattering revealed how confined water governs the phase behavior of the sodium montmorillonite gels. Translational acoustic phonons hardened (shifted to higher energy), while librational modes softened, corresponding to an increased distortion and confinement of water with decreased water content. For a wet sample (∼166 wt % water content) with well-developed pore structure, vibrational modes underwent a phase change on heating from hexagonal ice-like spectral features to those of bulk-like liquid water near 270
