The risk of Parkinson's disease with exposure to pesticides, farming, well water, and rural living.

We assessed exposure to pesticides, farming, well water use, and rural living as risk factors for Parkinson's disease (PD) in a population-based case-control study consisting of men and women > or = 50 years of age who had primary medical care at Henry Ford Health System in metropolitan Detroit. Enrolled PD patients (n = 144) and control subjects (n = 464) were frequency-matched for age, race, and sex. When adjusted for these variables and smoking status, there was a significant association of occupational exposure to herbicides (odds ratio [OR], 4.10; 95% CI, 1.37, 12.24) and insecticides (OR

An analysis of chemicals and other constituents found in produced water from hydraulically fractured wells in California and the challenges for wastewater management.

As high-volume hydraulic fracturing (HF) has grown substantially in the United States over the past decade, so has the volume of produced water (PW), i.e., briny water brought to the surface as a byproduct of oil and gas production. According to a recent study (Groundwater Protection Council, 2015), more than 21 billion barrels of PW were generated in 2012. In addition to being high in TDS, PW may contain hydrocarbons, PAH, alkylphenols, naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), metals, and other organic and inorganic substances. PW from hydraulically fractured wells includes flowback w

Evaluation of water from Lake Coatetelco in central-south Mexico and surrounding groundwater wells for drinking and irrigation, and the possible health risks.

Due to an increasing reduction of hydrological resources across Mexico and their growing contamination from global warming and anthropogenic activities, this study evaluated water from the perennial Lake Coatetelco (Ca-Mg-HCO3) in tropical central-southern Mexico and groundwater (Ca-Mg-HCO3 and Na-HCO3-Cl) from the surrounding wells for drinking as well as irrigation qualities. Comparison with the WHO guidelines and the estimated water quality indices (DWQI and IWQI) grouped almost all the samples collected after the warm season rainfall in excellent and good categories (DWQI < 100) for drinki

Contrasting roles of rivers and wells as sources of drinking water on attack and fatality rates in a hepatitis E epidemic in Somalia.

In early 1988, an increased incidence of acute hepatitis was observed in villages along the Shebeli River in the Lower Shebeli region of Somalia. This was followed by a large epidemic that lasted until late 1989. In a survey of 142 villages with a population of 245,312 individuals, 11,413 icteric cases were recorded, of which 346 died, corresponding to an attack rate and a case fatality rate of 4.6% and 3.0%, respectively. The etiologic role of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in this epidemic was proven by demonstrating anti-HEV in 128 of 145 sampled cases as a sign of recent infection with HEV. In th

Molecular Genetic Diversity and Combining Ability for Some Physiological and Agronomic Traits in Rice under Well-Watered and Water-Deficit Conditions.

Water deficit is a pivotal abiotic stress that detrimentally constrains rice growth and production. Thereupon, the development of high-yielding and drought-tolerant rice genotypes is imperative in order to sustain rice production and ensure global food security. The present study aimed to evaluate diverse exotic and local parental rice genotypes and their corresponding cross combinations under water-deficit versus well-watered conditions, determining general and specific combining ability effects, heterosis, and the gene action controlling important traits through half-diallel analysis. Are cases of enteric disease due to Salmonella, Campylobacter, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium associated with well water?

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter, non-typhoidal Salmonella, Shigella, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia are responsible for ~1 million domestically acquired waterborne illnesses annually in the United States. The contribution of private well water and underlying geology to these infections has been underexplored. The objectives of this research were to (1) determine whether enteric disease cases in Pennsylvania cluster in time and space; and (2) determine whether enteric disease cases are associated with private well water and karst geology. METHODS: Confirmed cases of Campylobacter, non-typhoidal Salmon

Contaminated well water driving d-lactic acidosis in child with short bowel syndrome.

d-Lactic acidosis is a rare type of lactic acidosis that typically presents in patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS). Clinical features include a high anion-gap metabolic acidosis and acute onset of neurological impairment. The underlying pathology is thought to be due to altered gut flora and carbohydrate malabsorption in patients with altered gut anatomy. The treatment centers on correcting acid-base derangements, dietary modifications to decrease carbohydrate intake and antibiotics. We present a case of recurrent d-lactic acidosis in a patient with SBS. In this unique case, we highlight

Trends of temperature and total precipitable water, as well as the trend of surface pressure induced by CO2.

Two total precipitable water (TPW) monthly time series derived from hourly analyses and from 1:30 am and 1:30 pm (local time) analyses, respectively, from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis model version 5 (ERA5) data are practically identical. The TPW is increasing as surface and lower tropospheric temperatures are warming. Surface pressure is rising as well because of increased mass from atmospheric carbon dioxide and TPW above the surface. The close similarity of trends using hourly and twice-daily analyses suggest that using well-calibrated observations from a si

Geographic distributions of motor neuron disease mortality and well water use in U.S. counties.

OBJECTIVE: We recently reported that U.S. mortality rates for motor neuron disease (MND) at the level of the state are associated with well water use. However, data at the state level may not accurately reflect data at the individual level. We therefore examined the association between MND mortality and well water use utilizing data from smaller geographic units that may better reflect exposure and disease at the individual level. METHODS: We used data on age-adjusted MND mortality rates at the level of the county, obtained from the CDC, and corresponding data on the prevalence of well water

Grand rounds: nephrotoxicity in a young child exposed to uranium from contaminated well water.

CONTEXT: Private wells that tap groundwater are largely exempt from federal drinking-water regulations, and in most states well water is not subject to much of the mandatory testing required of public water systems. Families that rely on private wells are thus at risk of exposure to a variety of unmeasured contaminants. CASE PRESENTATION: A family of seven--two adults and five children--residing in rural northwestern Connecticut discovered elevated concentrations of uranium in their drinking water, with levels measured at 866 and 1,160 microg/L, values well above the U.S. Environmental Protec

Trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, nitrates, and other chemicals in well water in the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area.

In this study, the author examined the spatial and temporal distribution of tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene, nitrate, and several other organic and inorganic chemicals in large community wells in the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan Area and estimated the lifetime cancer risk associated with exposure to tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene. By 1992-1993, investigators found the industrial solvent tetrachloroethylene in 34 wells and found trichloroethylene in 16 wells. All wells had detectable levels of nitrate. In addition, investigators found radon, arsenic, cadmium, iron, manganese, tr

The risk of fluorosis in students exposed to a higher than optimal concentration of fluoride in well water.

OBJECTIVES: In December 1991 the residents of the community of Rigolet, Labrador, Canada, discovered that they were exposed to higher than 2.0 ppm fluoride in the drinking water from the new town well, which became operational in December 1983. In 1993 an investigation of the occurrence of fluorosis in children exposed to the high-fluoride water during different ages of life was carried out. METHODS: A dental examination for fluorosis was conducted using Pendrys' Fluorosis Risk Index. Out of 84 students in Rigolet, 74 were examined and the parents of 60 students agreed to be interviewed. Reduction of enteric infectious disease in rural China by providing deep-well tap water.

Enteric infectious disease (EID), defined here as bacillary dysentery, viral hepatitis A, El Tor cholera, or acute watery diarrhoea, is an important public health problem in most developing countries. This study assessed the impact on EID of providing deep-well tap water (DWTW) through household taps in rural China. For this purpose, we compared the incidence of EID in six study villages (population, 10,290) in Qidong County that had DWTW with that in six control villages (population 9397) that had only surface water. Both the bacterial counts and chemical properties of the DWTW met establishe

An Unconventional Approach Imparting Structurally Well-Defined Photoluminescent Gold Clusters With Water Solubility.

Well-defined gold clusters that are water-soluble and photoluminescent are promising candidates for diverse applications in biological systems. We present here an unconventional approach that imparts water solubility to atomically precise gold clusters, which is achieved through de novo surface modification with dimethoxymethyl (formaldehyde dimethyl acetal) groups. By attaching dimethoxymethyl on pyridyl groups in [(C)(Au-dppy)6Ag2](BF4)4 (1, dppy = 2-pyridyldiphenylphosphine), the solubility of resulted cluster [(C)(Au-La)6Ag2](BF4)4 (2a, La = 2-(4-dimethoxymethylpyridyl)diphenylphosphine) i

Motor neuron disease mortality rates in U.S. states are associated with well water use.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease with an unknown cause and invariably fatal outcome. We sought to evaluate a correlation between motor neuron disease (MND) mortality rates and residential radon levels that was previously reported for counties in the United Kingdom. We examined the relationships between age-adjusted MND mortality rates in U.S. states with residential radon levels, well water use, and other variables using structural equation modeling. We observed a significant correlation between MND mortality rates and radon levels. However, in structural equa

Treatment of arsenic in Bangladesh well water using a household co-precipitation and filtration system.

Laboratory and field tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a household filtration process and investigate the effects of phosphate and silicate on the removal of arsenic from Bangladesh groundwater by ferric hydroxides. Fe/As ratios of greater than 40 (mg/mg) were required to reduce arsenic to less than 50 microg/L in Bangladesh well water due to the presence of elevated phosphate and silicate concentrations. The household filtration process included co-precipitation of arsenic by adding a packet (approximately 2 g) of ferric and hypochlorite salts to 20 L of well water and sub

[Balkan nephropathy and urothelial cancer. Well water pollution and current questions on pathogenesis and carcinogenesis].

In the autopsied inhabitants who died from unrelated reasons in the villages-foci of Balkan Nephropathy (BN) the characteristic histologic changes of the initial phase of BN were found as well as the striking difference in the weight of the kidneys. The weight of a kidney amounting to 180 grams was noted. The continual, severe environmental exposure to polluted drinking water by erosive toxic silica accounts for the excessive silica accumulation in the kidney and its overhydration. Silica has an affinity for water molecules absorbating them on its surface, the absorption of water coats round t

Arsenic in private well water part 1 of 3: Impact of the New Jersey Private Well Testing Act on household testing and mitigation behavior.

Regularly ingesting water with elevated arsenic increases adverse health risks. Since September 2002, the NJ Private Well Testing Act (PWTA) has required testing untreated well water for arsenic during real estate transactions in 12 counties. Its implementation provides an opportunity to investigate the effects of policy intervention on well testing and treatment behavior. Here we analyze results of a survey mailed to 1943 random addresses (37% response), including responses from 502 private well households who purchased their homes prior to PWTA commencement and 168 who purchased after. We fi
