Amebae and ciliated protozoa as causal agents of waterborne zoonotic disease.

The roles free-living amebae and the parasitic protozoa Entamoeba histolytica and Balantidium coli play as agents of waterborne zoonotic diseases are examined. The free-living soil and water amebae Naegleria fowleri, Acanthamoeba spp., and Balamuthia mandrillaris are recognized etiologic agents of mostly fatal amebic encephalitides in humans and other animals, with immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts among the victims. Acanthamoeba spp. are also agents of amebic keratitis. Infection is through the respiratory tract, breaks in the skin, or by uptake of water into the nostrils, with spre

Waterborne disease outbreaks in the United States of America: causes and prevention.

National statistics on waterborne outbreaks in the United States of America show that 1,702 waterborne outbreaks with 542,018 cases of illness and 1,089 deaths have been reported. Almost all deaths prior to 1940 were due to typhoid fever; 9 deaths from other causes have occurred since 1971. During the past decade, 291 waterborne outbreaks were reported in community (43%) and noncommunity (33%) systems, and from the ingestion of contaminated water from recreational (14%) and individual (10%) water sources. Although several large waterborne outbreaks occurred during the past decade, most were in

Waterborne Protozoan Parasite and Thalassogenic Diseases in Marine Environment: Detection Techniques, Indicators and Public Health Implications.

Thalassogenic diseases are human infections associated with exposure to marine environments. This review explores the occurrence of Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, and Blastocystis sp. in seawater and shellfish and their implications for public health. Between 2015 and 2026, multiple studies reported the presence of these parasites in shellfish and seawater. Cryptosporidium spp. was found at average concentrations of 5.5 × 101 oocysts/g in shellfish and up to 3.7 × 101 oocysts/L in seawater. Giardia duodenalis reached 9.1 × 101 cysts/g in shellfish, close to the infectious dose, and

Hydrometeorology and geography affect hospitalizations for waterborne infectious diseases in the United States: A retrospective analysis.

Meteorology, hydroclimatology, and drinking water infrastructure influence the transmission of waterborne infectious diseases in the United States, but their roles are not well-understood and may vary by pathogen type or geographic region. Waterborne pathogens can cause severe intestinal, respiratory, or systemic infections in vulnerable people. Identifying the mechanisms that underlie contamination events and disease transmission is particularly important given that climate change may lead to more extreme floods, droughts, and seasonal precipitation. The association of meteorological variable

Waterborne diseases in waste pickers of Estrutural, Brazil, the second largest open-air dumpsite in world.

Brazil was home to the second largest open-air dump in the world, Estrutural, which officially closed in January of 2018; however, many dumpsites throughout the country continue to operate informally. Prior to government-recognized closure, there were about 1200 waste pickers working at the dump. These workers were subject to a myriad of occupational and environmental risks; one primary hazard involved exposure to contaminated water, which significantly affects health and quality of life. As part of the official closure plan for Estrutural, a study was conducted to determine the occurrence of

Outbreaks of waterborne infectious intestinal disease in England and Wales, 1992-5.

Following the introduction of an improved surveillance system for infectious intestinal disease outbreaks in England and Wales, the Public Health Laboratory Service Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre received reports of 26 outbreaks between 1 January 1992 and 31 December 1995 in which there was evidence for waterborne transmission of infection. In these 26 outbreaks, 1756 laboratory confirmed cases were identified of whom 69 (4%) were admitted to hospital. In 19 outbreaks, illness was associated with the consumption of drinking water from public supplies (10 outbreaks) or private supplie

[Environmental sanitation and mortality associated with waterborne diseases in children under 5 years of age in Brazil].

OBJECTIVE: Determine and evaluate the relationship between the variables for water conditions, environmental sanitation, and mortality in children under 5 years of age associated with a group of waterborne diseases. METHODS: An exploratory ecological study was conducted based on data obtained from the 2000 national demographic census and the Unified Health System for the 558 microregions of Brazil. The model used multiple linear regression analysis. Mortality associated with waterborne diseases in children under 5 years of age was considered to be the response variable. Water conditions, sani

Waterborne diseases of bacterial origin in relation to quality of water in a suburb of Uttar Pradesh.

Waterborne disorders of bacterial origin, e.g. typhoid, bacillary dysentery and diarrhea are one of the major global health problems, especially in developing countries like India. The prevalence of these diseases is largely dependent on the quality of water consumed by people. The quality of water in India is still below the WHO recommendation of zero fecal coliform/100 ml of water. The present study was conducted in a suburb of Aligarh District of U.P. (India). A total of 1270 persons were selected by paying home visits and followed up for a period of one year. The study revealed that morbid

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on five food- and waterborne diseases in six European countries, 2016-21.

The COVID-19 pandemic required a shift in healthcare and public health focus and led to numerous public health measures also affecting food- and waterborne diseases (FWDs). We describe the impact of the pandemic using the number of confirmed domestically-acquired and travel-related cases of campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, hepatitis A, shigellosis, and listeriosis notified to ECDC between 2016 and 2021 by Czechia, Denmark, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. We compared the monthly median number of cases from the pre-pandemic period to those during the pandemic. We used data on inte

Performance of the rural health improvement scheme in reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases in rural Sarawak, Malaysia.

This study evaluates and discusses the impact of the rural health improvement scheme in reducing the incidence of dysentery, enteric fever, cholera and viral hepatitis in Sarawak, Malaysia, using data compiled from state and federal health department reports. This study suggests that from 1963 to 2002, water supply intervention contributed to a more than 200-fold decrease in dysentery and a 60-fold decrease in enteric fever. Variations in reporting of viral hepatitis during that period make it difficult to detect a trend. Cholera was still endemic in 2002. Cholera and dysentery outbreaks, occu

Estimating Waterborne Infectious Disease Burden by Exposure Route, United States, 2014.

More than 7.15 million cases of domestically acquired infectious waterborne illnesses occurred in the United States in 2014, causing 120,000 hospitalizations and 6,600 deaths. We estimated disease incidence for 17 pathogens according to recreational, drinking, and nonrecreational nondrinking (NRND) water exposure routes by using previously published estimates. In 2014, a total of 5.61 million (95% credible interval [CrI] 2.97-9.00 million) illnesses were linked to recreational water, 1.13 million (95% CrI 255,000-3.54 million) to drinking water, and 407,000 (95% CrI 72,800-1.29 million) to NRN

Mathematical Analyses on the Effects of Control Measures for a Waterborne Disease Model with Socioeconomic Conditions.

Waterborne diseases are present major health problems to humanity especially in rural communities where many individuals belong to the lower socioeconomic classes (SECs). The impacts of introducing waterborne disease control measures for such communities are investigated by considering a waterborne disease model. The model is extended by introducing treatment of infected individuals and water purification as control measures. The possible benefits of considering these control measures for the various SECs are investigated. Further analyses show how different degrees of control impact the rate

Waterborne Disease Outbreaks Associated with Splash Pads - United States, 1997-2022.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Splash pads are recreational interactive water venues that spray or jet water on users. Splash pads are intended for children aged <5 years and designed so that water typically does not collect in areas accessible to users, thereby minimizing the risk for drowning. Splash pads were first found to be associated with waterborne disease outbreaks in 1997. PERIOD COVERED: 1997-2022. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: Since 1971, waterborne disease outbreaks have been voluntarily reported to CDC by state, local, and territorial health departments using a standard paper form via the Waterbo

Burden of Disease Attributed to Waterborne Transmission of Selected Enteric Pathogens, Australia, 2010.

AbstractUniversal access to safe drinking water is a global priority. To estimate the annual disease burden of campylobacteriosis, nontyphoidal salmonellosis, cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and norovirus attributable to waterborne transmission in Australia, we multiplied regional World Health Organization (WHO) estimates of the proportion of cases attributable to waterborne transmission by estimates of all-source disease burden for each study pathogen. Norovirus was attributed as causing the most waterborne disease cases (479,632; 95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 0-1,111,874) followed by giardia

Multi-pathogen waterborne disease outbreak associated with a dinner cruise on Lake Michigan.

We report an outbreak associated with a dinner cruise on Lake Michigan. This took place on the same day as heavy rainfall, which resulted in 42·4 billion liters of rainwater and storm runoff containing highly diluted sewage being released into the lake. Of 72 cruise participants, 41 (57%) reported gastroenteritis. Stool specimens were positive for Shigella sonnei (n=3), Giardia (n=3), and Cryptosporidium (n=2). Ice consumption was associated with illness (risk ratio 2·2, P=0·011). S. sonnei was isolated from a swab obtained from the one of the boat's ice bins. Environmental inspection revealed

A simulation model of waterborne gastro-intestinal disease outbreaks: description and initial evaluation.

We present an agent-based simulation model for generating realistic multivariable outbreak signals. The model defines a synthetic population and simulates the dissemination of pathogenic organisms through a municipal water distribution system, the mobility of individuals between geographic locations, their exposure to pathogens through water consumption, and disease progression in infected individuals. We present the results of an initial evaluation of the model - a simulation study replicating the historical outbreak of cryptosporidiosis in Milwaukee in 1993.

Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment of Drinking Water Quality to Predict the Risk of Waterborne Diseases in Primary-School Children.

Primary-school children in low- and middle-income countries are often deprived of microbiologically safe water and sanitation, often resulting in a high prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases and poor school performance. We used Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) to predict the probability of infection in schoolchildren due to consumption of unsafe school water. A multistage random-sampling technique was used to randomly select 425 primary schools from ten districts of Sindh, Pakistan, to produce a representative sample of the province. We characterized water supplies in selected s
