BACKGROUND: Chilblains or perniosis is a moderately severe form of cold injury, localized to peripheral parts of the body, which occurs after exposure to non-freezing temperatures and damp conditions. Although inter-individual variations exist with respect to susceptibility to develop chilblains, no study has been carried out in this region to determine the role of different weather conditions either alone or in combination, in predisposing the susceptible individuals to chilblains. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between weather conditions and onset of chilblains

Studies have shown that climatic factors can significantly influence transmission of many waterborne diseases. However, knowledge of the impact of climate variability on cryptosporidiosis is much less certain. Associations between the incidence of cryptosporidiosis and climatic variables have been reported in several countries. Given that the identified relationships were not consistently reported across studies, it is not known whether these were country-specific observations or can be considered more globally. Variation in the disease risk in both low- and middle-income countries and high-in

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The incidence of geriatric fractures (proximal femur, distal radius, proximal humerus and thoracolumbar spine injuries) in the population increases with ageing. However, the role of weather conditions, such as icy and slippery winter, should not be overlooked. A deeper insight into this relationship may bring about a better understanding of the fracture aetiology and thus allow for improvement in the prevention of fractures in elderly people. MATERIAL AND METHODS This prospective study included 676 patients (469 women and 207 men) aged 65 and over. Relationships between th

Atmospheric pollution and weathering of stone surfaces in urban historic buildings frequently results in disfigurement or damage by salt crust formation (often gypsum), presenting opportunities for bioremediation using microorganisms. Conventional techniques for the removal of these salt crusts from stone have several disadvantages: they can cause colour changes; adversely affect the movement of salts within the stone structure; or remove excessive amounts of the original surface. Although microorganisms are commonly associated with detrimental effects to the integrity of stone structures, the

Outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis have been linked to weather patterns such as heavy precipitation. However, outbreaks only account for a small percentage of all cryptosporidiosis cases and so the causes of the majority of cases are uncertain. This study assessed the role of environmental factors in all cases of cryptosporidiosis by using ordinary least-squares regression to examine the relationship between the monthly cryptosporidiosis rate, and the weather and river flows in England and Wales between 1989 and 1996. Between April and July the cryptosporidiosis rate was positively related to maxi

BACKGROUND: The etiology of sudden idiopathic hearing loss is not known. Among other causes, vascular disease is discussed as a possible pathomechanism in sudden hearing loss. Since other vascular diseases such as myocardial infarction, migraine, and open-angle glaucoma show a clear meteorotropy, it was the aim of the present prospective study to investigate the dependence of sudden hearing loss on weather parameters.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The incidence, the extent, and the remission of sudden idiopathic hearing loss in 128 patients were correlated with atmospheric pressure and temperature du

Changing weather fronts produce severe changes of daily rhythms. Electrical impulses arrive 1-2 days before the weather and create either atmospherics or "positive ions". They are responsible for the epidemic appearance of migraine and of thrombo-embolism. The impact of atmospheric electricity has been assessed in 1000 patients by daily urinalysis of serotonin, 5-HIAA, adrenaline, noradrenaline, histamine, thyroxine, 17-KS, 17-OH, Na, K, creatinine and diureses. The changes found in these 12 parameters allowed a classification of heat reactions into three clinical entities: 1. serotonin hyperp

Early warning systems for vector-borne diseases (VBDs) prediction are an ecological application where data from the interface of several environmental components can be used to predict future VBD transmission. In general, models for early warning systems only consider average environmental conditions ignoring variation in weather variables, despite the prediction from Schmalhausen's law about the importance of environmental variability for biological systems. We present results from a long-term mosquito surveillance program from Harris County, Texas, USA, where we use time series analysis tech

Coupling of a late blight disease resistance gene to a humidity-responsive cis-element in potato achieves resistance under high-humidity conditions that favor disease. This strategy sidesteps the yield penalties associated with constitutive resistance gene expression.

Reliable light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is often challenged by multiscale water droplets on protective covers, as macroscopic raindrops cause refraction and diffraction, while microscopic fog condensation scatters light, distorting returned signals. Here, we present a bioinspired strategy for multiscale droplet clearance using plasmonic nanocomposite helices that couple passive photothermal antifogging with pressure-stable hydrophobic water repellence. Inspired by penguin feather barbules, copper nanoparticles are embedded within three-dimensional silica nanohelices via glancing angle co-

LiDAR is used in autonomous driving for navigation, obstacle avoidance, and environment mapping. However, adverse weather conditions introduce noise into sensor data, potentially degrading the performance of perception algorithms and compromising the safety and reliability of autonomous driving systems. Hence, in this paper, we investigate the limitations of LiDAR perception algorithms in adverse weather conditions, explore ways to mitigate the effects of noise, and propose future research directions to achieve all-weather autonomy with LiDAR sensors. Using real-world datasets and syntheticall

There has long been anecdotal evidence of early labor and delivery in severe weather events leading to preterm birth. In particular, significant barometric pressure changes are associated with hurricanes and bomb cyclones. Some authors have related these low pressure weather events to premature rupture of fetal membranes, hypothesizing that the membranes act as an inflated balloon and respond directly to pressure changes. In this article, the key literature including data supporting this hypothesis is reviewed. A simple numerical model, based on a competition between the driving and resisting

BACKGROUND: In the northern hemisphere people are exposed recurrently to cold air and asthmatics experience more respiratory symptoms. We hypothesized that subjects with poor asthma control are more prone to experience cold weather-related respiratory symptoms than those with good asthma control.
METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study of 1995 adult asthmatics (response rate 40.4%) living in the Northern Finland was conducted using a questionnaire where cold weather-related respiratory symptoms as well as questions related to asthma control were inquired. The Asthma Control Test (AC

Global climate change is expected to affect the frequency, intensity and duration of extreme water-related weather events such as excessive precipitation, floods, and drought. We conducted a systematic review to examine waterborne outbreaks following such events and explored their distribution between the different types of extreme water-related weather events. Four medical and meteorological databases (Medline, Embase, GeoRef, PubMed) and a global electronic reporting system (ProMED) were searched, from 1910 to 2010. Eighty-seven waterborne outbreaks involving extreme water-related weather ev

This study examined the impact of meteorological conditions on sporadic, community-acquired cases of Legionnaires' disease in England and Wales (2003-2006), with reference to the 2006 increase in cases. A case-crossover methodology compared each case with self-controlled data using a conditional logistic regression analysis. Effect modification by quarter and year was explored. In total, 674 cases were entered into the dataset and two meteorological variables were selected for study based on preliminary analyses: relative humidity during a case's incubation period, and temperature during the 1

Twenty-two cases of hypokalaemic paralysis seen over the past 7 years, are presented here. They included five Chinese, five Bangladeshis, six Arabs, four Philippinos and two Indians. The number of cases related to the population of each nationality in our area showed that the Chinese had the biggest number of cases in relation to their population in our area, followed by Philippinos then Bangladeshis. All patients were men admitted in the hot season, dehydrated and not able to walk. It seems that dehydration was an important precipitating factor in our cases. Although family history was positi

Visual scanning at 15-min intervals was used to monitor effects of shade forms and weather types on corral activities of cows. The method allowed one person to observe several dozen cows in a large pen, regardless of grouping pattern. Complete ration eating between 0600 and 1800 h was reduced 13% during hot weather, as compared to cool weather in unshaded corrals or pens with 4-m wide solid strip shades and unprotected manger . Hot afternoon fresh-feed eating response was reduced in comparison to cool weather 14% for unshaded corrals and 46% for strip shaded corrals having unprotected mangers

Weather extremes increasingly shape human mobility, yet their effects differ across households and locations. We advance understanding of climate-related mobility by distinguishing among four outcomes: domestic mobility, international mobility, combined domestic-international mobility, and immobility, rather than treating mobility as a simple binary choice. Focusing on Kyrgyzstan, a climate-vulnerable mountainous country in Central Asia, we combine nationally representative household panel data from 2013-2022 with high-resolution climate data. Here, we show that weather extremes, both within d
