Impact of Gestational Weight Gain and Maternal Weight on Sympathetic Adaptations.

BACKGROUND: Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) may cause maladaptive sympathetic neural responses and increase pregnancy risk, which may differ by maternal body mass index. We hypothesized that excessive GWG would further increase muscle sympathetic nerve activity across gestation, particularly in women with overweight or obesity. METHODS: Ninety pregnant women were studied longitudinally during early and late gestation and postpartum. Participants were classified by body mass index in early pregnancy and by GWG in late pregnancy based on the 2009 Institute of Medicine guidelines, formin

Birth weight, early weight gain and pubertal maturation: a longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of birth weight and early weight gain on the timing of various measures of puberty in both girls and boys. METHODS: A total of 856 newborns enrolled in the North Carolina Infant Feeding Study were followed to age 5 years, with 600 children followed up at adolescence. Birth weight was obtained from medical records and children were weighed at study visits until age 5 years; gains in standardized weights were calculated over four early age intervals: 0-6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years and 2-5 years. Age at menarche in girls and age at advanced Tanner stages

Weight suppression predicts weight gain during inpatient treatment of bulimia nervosa.

Bulimic individuals typically lose a substantial amount of weight in the process of developing their disorder. Such weight suppression (WS) may be behaviorally and metabolically problematic. The present study tested the hypothesis that WS would predict weight gain during the inpatient hospitalization of 146 bulimia nervosa-spectrum inpatients. WS represented the difference (M=12.0 kg) between highest weight ever and current body weight. Controlling for length of stay and current dieting (EAT-D scores), high levels of WS predicted greater weight gain. Furthermore, WS and admission BMI independe

Equation for predicting weight gain in very low-birth-weight infants.

I developed a single equation that simulated previously published growth charts for very low-birth-weight infants, using birth weight as the only variable. The intent of this study was to validate the equation using infants admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to determine if this equation could be used as a research tool to compare weight gain among populations. All 171 surviving infants with birth weight < or = 1500 g who received care in our NICU were studied retrospectively. The individual daily weights were compared with the predicted daily weights for each infant using

Weight, weight gain, activity, and major illnesses: the Nurses' Health Study.

The Nurses' Health Study was initiated in 1976 to study the relation between oral contraceptives and breast cancer. Subsequent funding was available to follow the cohort to address relations between cigarette smoking, postmenopausal hormones, hair dyes, and a range of cancers including breast, endometrial, ovarian, and lung cancer. The 121,700 participating nurses are followed up every 2 years via mail questionnaire to update exposure information to identify incident cancers and other illnesses. Follow-up through 1994 has achieved 90% response from living cohort members. Over the course of the

Maternal weight gain patterns and birth weight outcome in twin gestation.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between maternal weight gain patterns, based on pregravid body mass index (BMI) and birth weight outcome in twins, and to make specific recommendations for maternal weight gain during twin gestation. METHODS: One hundred eighty-nine twin pregnancies were reviewed retrospectively. Weekly rates of maternal weight gain before 20 weeks, from 20 weeks to delivery, and for total gestation were calculated. Thresholds of weekly maternal weight gain were determined for underweight and normal-weight women. RESULTS: In underweight women, a higher weekly rate of ga

Adolescent maternal weight gain and low birth weight: a multifactorial model.

Maternal weight gain is one of the most important independent predictors of infant birth weight and interacts with other maternal characteristics, including age, so that infant birth weight reaches a plateau at a higher level of maternal weight gain for young adolescents than for adults. It has been suggested that encouraging young adolescents to gain larger amounts of weight during pregnancy may be one way to decrease their risk of low-birth-weight deliveries. This recommendation may be premature because the mechanisms underlying the interaction between maternal age and weight gain are incomp

Genetic risk score for gestational weight gain.

Gestational weight gain (GWG) involves health consequences for both mother and offspring. Genetic factors seem to play a role in the GWG trait. For small effect sizes of a single genetic polymorphism (SNP), a genetic risk score (GRS) summarizing risk-associated variation from multiple SNPs can serve as an effective approach to genetic association analysis. The aim of the study was to analyze the association between genetic risk score (GRS) and gestational weight gain (GWG). GWG was calculated for a total of 342 healthy Polish women of Caucasian origin, aged 19 to 45 years. The SNPs rs9939609 (

Postnatal weight gain and retinopathy of prematurity.

Infants meeting retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening guidelines based on birth weight and gestational age undergo serial examinations by ophthalmologists for detection and treatment. However, less than 10% require treatment, and less than half develop ROP. Slow postnatal weight gain is highly predictive of ROP, and investigators have incorporated weight gain measures to develop more specific criteria for ROP screening. Such clinical prediction model use involves a large development study, validation studies specific to the target populations, and ongoing impact surveillance, with adjustm

Stress during pregnancy and gestational weight gain.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between prenatal stress and gestational weight gain (GWG). STUDY DESIGN: This was an analysis of women recruited between 2013-2015 from four sites in the US. We tested associations between responses at 32-35 weeks to the Life Experiences Survey (LES), a 37-item measure of events and perceived stress, and GWG categories. Bivariable comparisons and logistic regression were used to estimate the association between the total LES score and the odds of achieving adequate GWG. RESULT: Among the 725 women, those with adequate GWG had lower median LES scores (5)

Weight gain in children on oxcarbazepine monotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Studies of the effect of oxcarbazepine (OXC) on body growth of children with epilepsy are rare and their results are controversial. To the contrary, many studies have shown significant weight gain following valproate (VPA) treatment. PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate the effect of OXC monotherapy on growth patterns of children with epilepsy and compare it with the effect of VPA monotherapy. METHOD: Fifty-nine otherwise healthy children, aged 3.7-15.9 years, with primary generalized, partial or partial with secondary generalization seizure disorder, were included in the study. Tw

Body weight gain and deep brain stimulation.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical technique that has now been available for some 25 years. It is used in the treatment of various motor disorders, e.g. Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor and dystonia, and neuropsychiatric illnesses, e.g. obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette syndrome. The surgical targets of DBS include the thalamic ventralis intermedius nucleus (Vim), the globus pallidus internus (GPi) and more recently the subthalamic nucleus (STN), currently considered as the reference target in the treatment of PD. In the last ten years, most studies in PD patien

Adolescent drug addiction treatment and weight gain.

Neurotransmitter release in the nucleus accumbens use has been linked to self-administration and learning following drug use. This endogenous reward system is also activated following food intake or sex. Therefore, rebound hyperphagia following abstinence may be a mechanism to replenish the release of neurotransmitters in this reward system, leading to increased weight gain and a rise in body mass index during recovery from substance abuse. In this report, we examined the relationship between supervised drug abstinence and increased weight gain among adolescents at a residential substance abus

Weight gain: side effect of atypical neuroleptics?

During clinical experience with the "atypical" neuroleptic drugs clozapine, risperidone, and zotepine, some patients have shown a marked weight gain. To prove whether weight gain is a relevant side effect of atypical neuroleptics, the charts of all patients admitted with DSM-III-R diagnoses of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or delusional disorder in the years 1991 to 1995 were evaluated. A retrospective chart review was performed, which included all patients who were treated longer than 2 weeks with a single neuroleptic. The data analysis showed that weight gain must be considered as

Physical and psychological consequences of weight gain.

Obesity and overweight are clearly associated with many serious conditions, including type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and coronary heart disease. Excess weight also increases the risk of death. Recent evidence suggests that weight gain itself, even if persons remain within the "normal" weight range, also increases the risk of medical illnesses and premature death. Persons who gain 5.0 to 7.9 kg (11 to 17.3 lb) as adults are 1.9 times more likely to develop type II diabetes mellitus and 1.25 times more likely to develop coronary heart disease than those who lose weight or maintain a st

Nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic management of weight gain.

Obesity increases the risk of several serious health problems, including heart disease, type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and osteoarthritis. Patients taking certain psychotropic medications may gain a significant amount of weight (as much as a 5% increase in body weight within 1 to 2 months), placing them at risk for obesity. Body weight monitoring and prudent drug selection are the best approaches to preventing weight gain in patients taking psychotropic drugs. When weight gain (> 5% of initial body weight) is unavoidable, intervention counseling should begin. Nonpharmacologic measure

Dexfenfluramine for weight gain secondary to psychotropics.

We describe the use of dexfenfluramine (Redux) in six patients with mood disorders (bipolar disorder = 3; major depression = 3) who developed significant weight gain as a result of their psychotropics. All patients were females with an age range of 27-58 years. The duration of the trial varied from 3 to 20 weeks, with the dexfenfluramine dosage being 15 mg twice daily. Weight loss ranged from 2 to 23 pounds. None of the patients had any evidence of primary pulmonary hypertension or serotonin syndrome, despite being on serotonergic agents such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, and sertraline.
