Weight-related teasing is associated with body concerns, disordered eating, and health diagnoses in racially and ethnically diverse young men.

Research suggests that weight-related teasing is associated with body concerns and disordered eating in male and female adolescents and women. Yet, little is known about these associations for young men with diverse racial and ethnic identities. This study examined the association of weight-related teasing frequency and distress with body concerns, loss of control (LOC) eating, dietary restraint, and history of psychiatric and medical diagnoses in racially and ethnically diverse young men. Racial and ethnic identity was examined as a potential moderator. Participants (N = 1,069; 18-30 years; M

Perceived empathy and competence across psychotherapist appearance types: a quasi-experimental repeated-measures study.

INTRODUCTION: Physical appearance, including body weight and clothing, can affect perceptions of physicians' empathy and competence, thereby shaping the quality of the patient-physician relationship. Understanding these influences is essential for teaching about implicit bias in medical education. To examine how medical students' evaluations of psychotherapists' empathy and competence are influenced by external characteristics such as body weight and clothing style. METHODS: The survey is a quasi-experimental, video-based repeated-measures design. A total of 330 second-year medical students p

Internalized Weight Bias Is Associated With Dysregulated Affect and Binge Eating in Daily Life Among Adults of High Body Weight With and Without HIV.

BACKGROUND: High weight status (ie, body mass index ≥30 kg) is prevalent among people living with HIV, yet few studies have examined internalized weight bias (IWB) and its links to health outcomes in this population. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether momentary IWB was associated with contemporaneous and prospective risk for dysregulated affect and binge eating in the daily lives of adults of high weight status with HIV, and a reference group of adults of high weight status without HIV. DESIGN: This study is a secondary analysis of data from a 2-week ecological momentary assessment study

Weight-based discrimination and disordered eating behaviors in a cohort of U.S. sexual minority young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Though prevalent, weight-based discrimination is understudied and has been linked to disordered eating behaviors (DEB) among adolescents and adults. Sexual minority populations experience elevated risk of DEB, but little is known about the role of weight discrimination in this elevated risk. METHODS: Participants were 1257 sexual minority women and men (ages 18-31 years) in the US Growing Up Today Study cohort. We examined cross-sectional associations between weight discrimination victimization and three DEB in the past year: unhealthy weight control behaviors, overeating, and bing

Appearance Pressure From the Media Mediates the Relationship Between Internalized Weight Bias and Eating Disorder Risk for Young Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Internalized weight bias (IWB) is the application of negative stereotypes about people in larger bodies to oneself. IWB is associated with numerous negative physical and mental health outcomes, including increased risk of disordered eating. It is possible that this relationship is explained in part by pressure to achieve a so-called ideal body, due to the preponderance of the pro-thin and anti-fat bias often perpetuated in Western media content (ie, appearance pressure from the media). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine whether appearance pressure from the media mediated the r

The impact of target weight and gender on perceptions of likeability, personality attributes, and functional impairment.

BACKGROUND: Bias against individuals who are overweight is well documented. However, little is known about biased perceptions of men and women at varying specified degrees of overweight. METHODS: Men and women (N = 308) rated male and female figures (low normal weight, overweight, obese, extremely obese) on measures of dislike, personality characteristics, and functional limitations. RESULTS: Little or no bias was observed against overweight figures (BMI approximately 25 kg/m(2)); however, strong bias was observed against obese and extremely obese figures. Men's ratings of extremely obese fe

Women's Preferences for Home-Based Self-Sampling or Clinic-Based Testing for Cervical Cancer Screening.

IMPORTANCE: While home-based self-sampling for cervical cancer screening is an evidence-based strategy proven to increase screening access and uptake, it is not currently recommended in the US despite recent Food and Drug Administration approval of the first at-home self-sampling device. Little nationally representative research has examined preference for and drivers of home-based self-sampling over clinic-based testing (the standard of care). OBJECTIVE: To assess women's perspectives about, reasons for considering, and factors associated with preferring at-home self-sampling for cervical ca

Sexual orientation moderates the relationship between internalized weight bias and binge eating symptoms among adults pursuing bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minorities have higher rates of anxiety, depression, and binge eating compared to heterosexual peers. Internalized weight bias (IWB) is also higher for sexual minorities when compared to heterosexual peers. However, research has not examined whether the relationships between IWB and anxiety, depression, and binge eating differ among heterosexual and sexual minority adults pursuing bariatric surgery. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether sexual orientation (heterosexual or sexual minority) moderated the relationships between IWB and anxiety, depression, and binge eating among adult

Pride Before a Fall: Shame, Diagnostic Crossover, and Eating Disorders.

This paper discusses the findings of qualitative research that examined the accounts of five "mostly recovered" ex-patients who had experienced transition between two or more eating disorder diagnoses. This study found that, in the minds of participants, the different diagnostic labels were associated with various good or bad character traits. This contributed to the belief in a diagnostic hierarchy, whereby individuals diagnosed with anorexia nervosa were viewed as morally better than those diagnosed with bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder. Consequently, diagnostic crossover from a "bet

Anxiety disorders and obesity.

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental disorders in developed countries. On the other hand, obesity is recognized to be one of the greatest public health problems worldwide. The connection between body weight and mental disorders remains an open issue. Low body weight has been studied enough (anorexia nervosa is a typical example) but high body weight has not been addressed sufficiently. It is known that obesity has been related with depression. Although moderate level of evidence exists for a positive association between obesity and anxiety disorders, the exact association between the

Using Virtual Human Technology to Examine Weight Bias and the Role of Patient Weight on Student Assessment of Pediatric Pain.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of weight bias and demographic characteristics on the assessment of pediatric chronic pain. Weight status, race, and sex were manipulated in a series of virtual human (VH) digital images of children. Using a web-based platform, 96 undergraduate students with health care-related majors (e.g., Health Science, Nursing, Biology, and Pre-Medicine) read a clinical vignette and provided five ratings targeting the assessment of each VH child's pain. Students also answered a weight bias questionnaire. Group-based analyses were conducted to deter

Exploring the interplay of weight-based teasing and sociodemographic factors in adolescent weight bias internalization.

OBJECTIVE: Research has highlighted the potential adverse effects of weight bias internalization (WBI) on adolescents, but there has been little examination of WBI and sources of weight teasing (family, peers, or both) or across racial/ethnic diversity of adolescents. We aimed to examine the relationship between WBI and sources of weight teasing across sociodemographic characteristics and weight status in a diverse community sample of adolescents. METHODS: Data were collected from a U.S. sample of 1859 adolescents aged 10-17 years (59% female; 43% White, 27% Black or African American, and 25%

HIV, HCV, HBV, and syphilis among transgender women from Brazil: Assessing different methods to adjust infection rates of a hard-to-reach, sparse population.

Different sampling strategies, analytic alternatives, and estimators have been proposed to better assess the characteristics of different hard-to-reach populations and their respective infection rates (as well as their sociodemographic characteristics, associated harms, and needs) in the context of studies based on respondent-driven sampling (RDS). Despite several methodological advances and hundreds of empirical studies implemented worldwide, some inchoate findings and methodological challenges remain. The in-depth assessment of the local structure of networks and the performance of the avail

Scoping Review of Microaggression as an Experience of Racism and Perinatal Health Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize current knowledge and identify gaps in the literature related to microaggression as an experience of racism and its influence on perinatal health outcomes. DATA SOURCES: We searched PubMed, Race Relations Abstracts, Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Scopus using the keywords "micro-aggression" and "microaggression." Because microaggression is an all-encompassing term, we included articles that used keywords such as "racism," "prejudice," and/or "discrimination" because these terms are precursors to and touch on aspects of microaggression. We also include

Understanding Internalized Weight Bias and Its Psychological Consequences: Implications for Improving Quality of Life.

Conducted in a French clinical context, this study examines the association between experiences of weight stigma, internalized weight bias (IWB), coping strategies, quality of life (QoL), and obesity-specific self-efficacy (OSSE) among adults living with obesity. It also tests whether coping mediates the relationship between IWB and QoL or OSSE. A cross-sectional sample of 132 adults (mean age = 49.3 years; mean BMI = 41.5 kg/m2) completed questionnaires assessing experienced weight stigma, IWB, coping strategies (adaptive and maladaptive), QoL (Mental Health Continuum-Short Form), and OSSE. Who drives weight stigma? A multinational exploration of clustering characteristics behind weight bias against preconception, pregnant, and postpartum women.

BACKGROUND: Weight bias is a global health challenge and community members are endorsed as the most common source of weight bias. The nature of weight biases specifically against preconception, pregnant, and postpartum (PPP) women from the perspective of community members is not known, especially in terms of cross-cultural trends. We investigated the magnitude of explicit and implicit weight bias and profiles of characteristics associated with harbouring weight bias. METHODS: We conducted a multinational investigation of clusters of factors associated with weight bias against PPP women (May-J

Body- and Fitness-Related Shame Helps Explain the Association Between Internalized Weight Bias and Orthorexia Symptoms Among North American Female Yoga Professionals.

BACKGROUND: Recently, emerging population-based evidence has revealed that yoga practitioners are particularly vulnerable to engaging in disordered eating behaviors, inclusive of orthorexia symptoms (OS). Although orthorexia tends to be characterized by a hypervigilance over consuming so-called healthy or clean foods based on quality attributes, its associations with variables related to broader diet culture (eg, internalized weight bias [IWB] and body- and fitness-related shame, guilt, and hubristic pride) remain underexamined. In addition, previous research has yet to explore the psychologic

Weight discrimination and up-to-date breast and cervical cancer screening in US women.

OBJECTIVE: Little research has investigated whether people's experiences with weight-related discrimination serve as a barrier to cancer screening. This study examined the association between weight discrimination and receipt of up to date (UTD) cervical and breast cancer screening in a demographically diverse sample of US women with representation across the body mass index (BMI) spectrum. METHODS: In 2021, women aged 25-64 years completed an online survey.
