The Ketogenic Diet: Breath Acetone Sensing Technology.

The ketogenic diet, while originally thought to treat epilepsy in children, is now used for weight loss due to increasing evidence indicating that fat is burned more rapidly when there is a low carbohydrate intake. This low carbohydrate intake can lead to elevated ketone levels in the blood and breath. Breath and blood ketones can be measured to gauge the level of ketosis and allow for adjustment of the diet to meet the user's needs. Blood ketone levels have been historically used, but now breath acetone sensors are becoming more common due to less invasiveness and convenience. New technologie

Changes in olfactory function in children and adolescents with obesity following an inpatient weight loss program: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major global public health burden, yet the mechanisms underlying interindividual variability in treatment response remain poorly understood. Olfactory function influences eating behavior and may differ in individuals with obesity. However, evidence in pediatric populations is limited, and their responsiveness to weight loss remains unclear. This study aimed to assess olfactory function in children and adolescents with obesity before and after an inpatient weight loss intervention. Specifically, we examined whether olfactory performance is within normative values and wh

Home-Delivered Pediatric Weight Management for Low-Income Families: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Children from lower-income households lose less weight in family-based weight management interventions, likely due to barriers to treatment attendance and adherence. The CHECK randomized controlled trial tested whether delivering pediatric weight management interventions in the home improves weight loss outcomes relative to clinic-delivered intervention. METHODS: Enrolled families included 269 children (137 boys) who were aged 6 to 12 years, had overweight/obesity, and lived in lower-income English- or Spanish-speaking households in Chicago, Illinois (2017-2022). Behavioral weight loss interventions for people with physical disabilities: A systematic review.

AIM: The aim of this study is to examine which interventions lead to clinically significant weight loss among people with physical disabilities. METHODS: We systematically searched three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and CENTRAL) including studies until May 2022 to find randomized controlled trials on behavioral interventions and weight-related outcomes in people with physical disabilities. Pharmacological or surgical interventions were excluded. Study quality was evaluated using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. Interventions were grouped as dietary, physical activity, education/coachi

Empowerment in Obesity and Behavioral Weight-Management Programmes: A Scoping Review.

In the UK, over 25% of adults are living with obesity, with disproportionately higher rates among Black adults (35%) and those in the most deprived areas (36%). Obesity is linked to increased comorbidity, mortality, stigma, and substantial annual health costs exceeding £11.4 billion. Behavioral weight-management programmes are the primary intervention recommended for obesity treatment, yet they demonstrate limited effectiveness, inadequate long-term support, a lack of personalized care and poor cultural relevance. Participatory approaches, that is, bottom-up strategies engaging communities, ar

Eating Disorders In weight-related Therapy (EDIT) Collaboration: rationale and study design.

The cornerstone of obesity treatment is behavioural weight management, resulting in significant improvements in cardio-metabolic and psychosocial health. However, there is ongoing concern that dietary interventions used for weight management may precipitate the development of eating disorders. Systematic reviews demonstrate that, while for most participants medically supervised obesity treatment improves risk scores related to eating disorders, a subset of people who undergo obesity treatment may have poor outcomes for eating disorders. This review summarises the background and rationale for t

Expression of Markers of Endometrial Receptivity in Obese Infertile PCOS Women before and after the Weight Loss Program-A Preliminary Study.

Obesity is an increasing worldwide problem, and it is common in women with polycystic ovaries syndrome (PCOS). It is well known that women with PCOS have lower chances of spontaneous conception as well as lower success with IVF procedures. The mechanisms by which obesity causes lower fertility are not yet fully understood. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of a lifestyle intervention weight loss program on the expression of the endometrial genes during the window of implantation (WOI). For this purpose, 15 infertile women with obesity and PCOS were included in the study.

Motivation of overweight patients with atrial fibrillation to lose weight or to follow a weight loss management program: a cross-sectional study.

AIMS: Overweight increases the risk of recurrence and progression of atrial fibrillation (AF). This study assesses the knowledge of overweight AF patients about the relation between their weight and AF, to gauge their motivation losing weight and/or following weight reduction programs. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional descriptive study was performed at three Belgian hospitals. A validated self-developed questionnaire was presented to AF patients with a body mass index (BMI) >27 kg/m2 and it addressed: motivation to reduce weight and its related factors; knowledge about the relation betw

Weight reduction methods of college women.

Weight reduction attitudes and practices were obtained from a sample of 400 female students. Forty-eight percent reported using a weight loss program since admission to college. The programs most often selected included hypocaloric diets and exercise. Although the majority of subjects rated hypocaloric diets and exercise as good methods for weight reduction and indicated that they would recommend them to others, these methods supported the slowest rate of weight loss. Evidently, the side effects and costs of the other programs offset the rapid weight loss. Other methods, in descending order of

Starting, staying and succeeding: motivation, life aspirations and hobbies as possible predictors of progression through a real-world online weight loss program.

BACKGROUND: Autonomous motivation is widely considered important for behaviour change, particularly around longer term, goal-orientated pursuits such as weight management. Few studies have explored how motivation predicts progression in real-world weight management from initiation to weight loss. METHODS: The Diet Mindset Quiz was developed as a health promotion tool that captures aspects of motivation based on self-determination theory, as well as broader life aspirations and intrinsic motivators or hobbies. The Quiz is provided free on the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet (TWD) platform - which h

Understanding the Components of Eating Behaviour-Focused Weight Management Interventions Adjunct to Metabolic Bariatric Surgery: Systematic Review of Published Literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eating behaviour-focused interventions are essential for improving health and weight-related outcomes in patients undergoing metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS). This work aims to examine the content of eating behaviour-focused weight management interventions adjunct to MBS in terms of the type and quantity of behaviour change techniques (BCTs). A literature search retrieved randomised controlled and parallel group trials up to March 2024. RECENT FINDINGS: A total of 25 trials were included in the final analysis. Trained coders used Michie's BCT taxonomy v1.0 to code interven

Brief Primary Care Obesity Interventions: A Meta-analysis.

CONTEXT: Although practice guidelines suggest that primary care providers working with children and adolescents incorporate BMI surveillance and counseling into routine practice, the evidence base for this practice is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of brief, primary care interventions for pediatric weight management on BMI. DATA SOURCES: Medline, CENTRAL, Embase, PsycInfo, and CINAHL were searched for relevant publications from January 1976 to March 2016 and cross-referenced with published studies. The impact of weight reduction in the prevention of the progression of obstructive sleep apnea: an explanatory analysis of a 5-year observational follow-up trial.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a chronic progressive disease, and it is well-documented that severe OSA is associated with an increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Weight reduction has been shown to improve OSA; however, we need further evidence to determine if it may prevent the progression of OSA in the long term. The aim of our study was to assess the impact of weight change during a 5-year observational follow-up of an original 1-year randomized controlled trial. METHODS: The participants were divided into the two groups according to the weight change at 5-year f
