Central obesity measured by weight-adjusted waist index is associated with lean MASLD.

BACKGROUND: In individuals with normal body weight, altered fat distribution contributes to metabolic dysfunction and hepatic steatosis. We hypothesized that the weight-adjusted waist index (WWI), an indicator of abdominal fat accumulation, is associated with lean MASLD. METHODS: We analyzed lean adults from 2017-March 2020 pre-pandemic (N = 824). MASLD was defined using controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) from vibration-controlled transient elastography together with metabolic criteria. Four machine learning models (XGB, GBM, LASSO, SVM) were trained to prioritize candidate predictors fro

Evaluation of the Average Molecular Weight of Polyelectrolytes via Pulsed Streaming Potential Measurements.

Many methods have been established for determining the molecular weight of polymers; however, significant challenges remain when the polymers are highly charged, largely due to the so-called "polyelectrolyte effect". In this work, the molecular weight of polyelectrolytes was evaluated based on their adsorption kinetics onto oppositely charged surfaces in a microchannel by pulsed streaming potential (SP) measurements. The initial rate constant (ki) was found to be dependent on the molecular weight of a polyelectrolyte under controlled experimental conditions. Assuming that adsorption at the ini

The relationships between anthropometric measurements, organ weights and intracranial, carotid and coronary atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of cardiovascular-cerebrovascular diseases. Obesity and atherosclerosis are related, and obesity can lead to systemic diseases and an increase in organ weight. Anthropometric measurements such as body mass index, waist circumference and hip circumference are used to determine the risk of obesity. We conducted this study to evaluate the relationship between obesity and atherosclerosis in postmortem cases. We aimed to determine the relationships among anthropometric measurements; subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness; atherosclerosis in the in

Weighted cart pull: A novel outcome measure for sustained motor function in mice.

Sarcopenia, the pathological age-related decline in muscle mass and strength, compromises independence and quality of life in older adults. Currently, no effective treatments are available. To enhance translational research using aged mouse models, we developed and validated the weighted cart pull (WCP) as a novel assessment of sustained motor function. The WCP test involved attaching a weighted cart to the tail of a mouse as it climbed a ramp to a 'resting house'. Mass was increased incrementally until failure, defined as either five consecutive hindquarter pokes without progress or sliding b

Measurements of biologically effective solar radiation using erythemal weighted broadband meters.

In this paper, we describe conversion factors (CF) for the calculation of biologically effective irradiances (BEI) from erythemal irradiance for three effects: photosynthesis of previtamin D3, psoriasis healing, and inactivation of the SARS-Cov-2 virions. CFs were empirically derived from measurements of spectral solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation during all sky conditions at four mid-latitude sites in the Northern Hemisphere, namely Aosta, Belsk, Reading, and San Diego. These CFs were found to depend on solar zenith angle (SZA) and total column ozone, but are largely independent (within ± 5% fo

Frequency of measuring body weight in (sub)populations of patients with cancer treated with chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVES: Most cytostatics used in cancer treatment are dosed on body surface area (BSA). To administer an appropriate dose it is therefore necessary to know the patient's correct body weight. However, evidence is lacking on how often, after initiation of treatment, body weight should be measured to recalculate BSA. We aimed to assess the relevance of weight measurements during chemotherapy treatment. METHODS: Over a 2 year period we analysed BSA changes in adult patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment. The frequency of and median time to ≥10% BSA change was determined. We assumed a 10%

Measuring cardiomyocyte cellular characteristics in cardiac hypertrophy using diffusion-weighted MRI.

PURPOSE: This paper presents a hierarchical modeling approach for estimating cardiomyocyte major and minor diameters and intracellular volume fraction (ICV) using diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) data in ex vivo mouse hearts. METHODS: DWI data were acquired on two healthy controls and two hearts 3 weeks post transverse aortic constriction (TAC) using a bespoke diffusion scheme with multiple diffusion times ( Δ $$ \Delta $$ ), q-shells and diffusion encoding directions. Firstly, a bi-exponential tensor model was fitted separately at each diffusion time to disentangle the dependence on diffusion

Measuring Strain in Diffusion-Weighted Data Using Tagged Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Accurate strain measurement in a deforming organ has been essential in motion analysis using medical images. In recent years, internal tissue's in vivo motion and strain computation has been mostly achieved through dynamic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. However, such data lack information on tissue's intrinsic fiber directions, preventing computed strain tensors from being projected onto a direction of interest. Although diffusion-weighted MR imaging excels at providing fiber tractography, it yields static images unmatched with dynamic MR data. This work reports an algorithm workflow that es

Traditional versus developmental measures of weight suppression: Exploring their relationships with bulimic psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: Weight suppression (WS) is related to a wide variety of eating disorder characteristics. However, individuals with eating disorders usually reach their highest premorbid weight while still developing physically. Therefore, a more sensitive index of individual differences in highest premorbid weight may be one that compares highest premorbid z-BMI to current z-BMI (called developmental weight suppression [DWS] here). METHOD: In this exploratory study, we compared the relationships between traditional weight suppression (TWS) and DWS and a variety of measures related to bulimic psych

A comparison of traditional and developmental measures of weight suppression in residential patients with bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Weight suppression (WS) is associated with many eating disorder (ED)-related symptoms. However, traditional calculations of WS do not consider the age or height at which one's highest past weight was reached. Lowe et al. (2022) found that developmental WS (DWS) was associated with a wider variety of ED-related symptoms compared with traditional WS (TWS). This study replicated and extended these findings in a larger sample of individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) at a residential ED treatment center. METHODS: Participants were 1051 female patients with BN. We examined the relations

Development of intraoperative plantar pressure measuring system considering weight bearing axis.

PURPOSE: Surgical reconstructions in three dimensions are needed for treatment of foot and ankle deformities. However, surgical results might be influenced by the skill and experience of doctors which complement the limited information for reconstructions in three dimensions. To solve these, studies were carried out to measure plantar pressure distribution during surgery. Though, it was impossible to accurately measure plantar pressure distribution accurately during operation. Therefore, we proposed an intraoperative plantar pressure measurement (IPPM) device that enables proper navigation in

Prevalence of under and over weight in children with neurodisability, using body composition measures.

We aimed to compare rates of under and overweight in children with different neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) by measuring weight, height/length, arm-to-leg bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and subscapular and triceps skinfolds in 146 children aged 4-16 years attending special schools. Z scores were calculated and skinfolds and lean mass Z scores were further adjusted for height. Underweight was found in 9% (14) children (body mass index (BMI) < 2nd) but only 3% (4) had skinfolds <5th centile. Overweight was much commoner, with 41% (58) children having BMI > 95th and 20% (14) had skinfolds >95t

Influence of arterial input function on hypoperfusion volumes measured with perfusion-weighted imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The arterial input function (AIF) is critical in determining hemodynamic parameters quantitatively with bolus-tracking MRI. We studied the effect of varying the location of measurement of AIF on the volume of hypoperfusion. We compared the volumes of hypoperfusion obtained with different AIFs with the final ischemic lesion volume. METHODS: We included 13 patients with acute cerebral ischemia in the anterior circulation who underwent diffusion- (DWI) and perfusion (PWI)-weighted imaging within 8 hours after symptom onset and exhibited DWI lesion expansion between baseli

Serum thyroid hormone and thyroid gland weight measurements in protein-energy malnutrition.

Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is a problem which concerns about half the world's children. We investigated the effects of malnutrition on thyroid gland weight and thyroid hormone levels. 22 children suffering from malnutrition (14 children suffering from marasmus and 8 children suffering from kwashiorkor) and 7 healthy controls were studied. Malnutrition was confirmed clinically and according to the Wellcome classification definition of malnutrition. Serum thyroid hormone concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay and the weights of the thyroid gland were evaluated scintigraphically.

Are there ethnic differences in the association between body weight and resistance, measured by bioelectrical impedance?

OBJECTIVE: To describe ethnic differences in the relationship between body size and body composition. Knowledge about such differences is important when studying obesity-related complications, such as hypertension and non-insulin dependent diabetes, because it may not be possible to generalize results from one study population to other populations. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS: Four groups of different ethnic identity (2987 Caucasians (Danes), 243 predominantly Melanesian (Torres Strait Islanders from northern Australia), 206 Australian Aborigines and 146 Polynesians (New Zealand
