Trophic redundancy within a diverse community of sympatric delphinids in the oligotrophic Caribbean Sea.

Understanding the trophic interactions of sympatric predators is essential to assess ecosystem structure, particularly in oligotrophic environments where resources are scarce. We examined the trophic structure of a diverse community of sympatric delphinids in the Lesser Antilles, in the eastern Caribbean Sea, using stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis. Isotope data suggest the existence of three distinct isotopic clusters. Killer whales (Orcinus orca) and false killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) exhibited the highest δ15N and δ13C values, broad isotopic niches, and minim

Comparative anatomy of the ciliary body of the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) and selected species.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the anatomy of the ciliary body in the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), paying close attention to its vascularization and to compare to those of its distant relative, the African elephant (Loxodonta africana), the amphibious hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) and the aquatic short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus). PROCEDURE: Specimens from each species were preserved in 10% buffered formalin, and observed stereomicroscopically before being embedded in paraffin, sectioned and stained by Masson trichrome, hematoxylin and eosin, and periodic acid-

Does sociality drive diversity and composition of airway microbiota in cetaceans?

The number of social contacts of mammals is positively correlated with the diversity of their gut microbes. There is some evidence that sociality also affects microbes in the respiratory tract. We tested whether the airway microbiota of cetacean species differ depending on the whales' level of sociality. We sampled the blow of blue (Balaenoptera musculus), grey (Eschrichtius robustus), humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and long-finned pilot whales (PWs) (Globicephala melas) and analysed the blow microbiota by barcode tag sequencing targeting the V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. When the small ones tease the largest: Microplastic and phthalate ester occurrence in cetaceans occasionally found in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea.

Living in potentially burdened waters and prey on loaded species, marine mammals are sentinels for microplastic (MP) pollution. Here, seven different species of cetaceans were investigated covering baleen (Mysticeti) and toothed (Odontoceti) whales stranded along the German coast between 2016 and 2021. Intestinal and faecal samples of 12 sperm whales, three minke whales, two dolphin species, one long-finned pilot whale, one fin whale and one neonate orca were analysed. The concentrations of 11 phthalates were assessed in blubber and muscle samples. MPs were detected with Nile Red staining, pol

Candidiasis in captive cetaceans.

Disseminated Candida albicans infections were found or suspected in 4 captive cetaceans. Ketoconazole at a dosage of 2.5 mg/kg, BID, administered orally for 18 days, followed by 8 biweekly oral doses of levamisole hydrochloride at the rate of 9 mg/kg, resulted in regression of clinical signs of candidiasis in an adult male Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). A higher dosage of ketoconazole (6 mg/kg, BID) was effective in eliminating the shedding of C albicans from an adult male belukha whale (Delphinapterus leucas). Anatomy of the cranial nerve foramina in the Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus).

In the present study, we examined the cranial nerve foramina of Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus). There were two distinguishable characters in the cranial nerve foramina compared with terrestrial mammals. One was that the foramen infraorbitale was composed of several holes, but not a single hole. They should therefore be termed foramina infraorbitales. The infraorbital nerves ran through these foramina, went into the 'melon' and then branched in a complicated fashion. The facial nerve innervated the muscles surrounding the melon. A well-developed infraorbital and facial nerve complex may cont

Fatal marine Brucella infections with histologic lesions specific to the central nervous system (CNS), known as neurobrucellosis, have been described in 5 species of odontocete cetaceans in the UK: striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba, Atlantic white-sided dolphins Lagenorhynchus acutus, short-beaked common dolphins Delphinus delphis, long-finned pilot whale Globicephala melas and Sowerby's beaked whale Mesoplodon bidens. To date, these CNS lesions have only been associated with Brucella ceti ST26 and not with B. pinnipedialis, which is rarely isolated from cetaceans and, although commonly f

Epidermal lipid in several cetacean species: ultrastructural observations.

The ultrastructure of the skin of four cetacean species, bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melaena), humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), and fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) was investigated with particular reference to epidermal lipid. It has already been established that massive lipid reservoirs exist in whales, that the biochemical structures of cetacean lipids are unique, and that unusual intracellular lipid droplets appear in the epidermis. We report here some novel findings on scanning electron microscopic morphology of epidermal lipid, a

Interspecies Retinal Diversity and Optic Nerve Anatomy in Odontocetes.

Throughout evolution, odontocete vision has had to readapt to the aquatic environment, which has had far-reaching effects on ocular anatomy and neurology. The most prominent features include the iris with an operculum, a well-developed choroid, the presence of giant ganglion cells in the retina, and the hemispherical shape of the thick eyecup. In the present study, the optic nerve and the retina were comparatively studied in Odontoceti (Cuvier's beaked whale, common bottlenose dolphin, false killer whale, long-finned pilot whale, Risso's dolphin, striped dolphin), the semi-aquatic common hippo

Mercury exposure of six Greenland societies from toothed whale harvest over three decades spanning 1993-2020.

In the present study, yearly hunting data for the period 1993-2020 is used to estimate subsistence annual harvest, consumed meat and subsequent methylmercury (MeHg) exposure of six selected Greenlandic municipalities. We compared the estimated yearly MeHg exposure for these municipalities with the calculated Provisional Tolerably Yearly Intake (PTYI) of MeHg based on the population numbers over the three decades. Three of six municipalities exceeded the PTYI. In Northwest Greenland (Qaanaaq), there was no temporal development exceeding the PTYI by 10.7-folds (range: 4.3-21.8). In East Greenlan

Lingual Surface Morphology in Delphinids: Structural Adaptations to Feeding Strategies.

Tongue morphology in cetaceans may reflect functional adaptations related to different feeding strategies. This study compared the lingual surface morphology of four delphinids species with different feeding strategies: the short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus), Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus), Clymene dolphin (Stenella clymene), and spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris). Macroscopic dissections, light microscopy analysis, histochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed on four tongues, one from each species. Assessing sources of human methylmercury exposure using stable mercury isotopes.

Seafood consumption is the primary route of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure for most populations. Inherent uncertainties in dietary survey data point to the need for an empirical tool to confirm exposure sources. We therefore explore the utility of Hg stable isotope ratios in human hair as a new method for discerning MeHg exposure sources. We characterized Hg isotope fractionation between humans and their diets using hair samples from Faroese whalers exposed to MeHg predominantly from pilot whales. We observed an increase of 1.75‰ in δ(202)Hg values between pilot whale muscle tissue and Faroese

Retrospective Study of Traumatic Intra-Interspecific Interactions in Stranded Cetaceans, Canary Islands.

Aggressive encounters involving cetacean species are widely described in the literature. However, detailed pathological studies regarding lesions produced by these encounters are scarce. From January 2000 to December 2017, 540 cetaceans stranded and were necropsied in the Canary Islands, Spain. Of them, 24 cases of eight species presented social traumatic lesions produced by cetaceans of the same or different species. All the cases presented severe multifocal vascular changes, 50% (12/24) presented fractures affecting mainly the thoracic region, 41.7% (10/24) acute tooth-rake marks, 37.5% (9/2

Mercury speciation and selenium in toothed-whale muscles.

Mercury accumulates at high levels in marine mammal tissues. However, its speciation is poorly understood. The main goal of this investigation was to establish the relationships among mercury species and selenium (Se) concentrations in toothed-whale muscles at different mercury levels. The concentrations of total mercury (T-Hg), methylmercury (MeHg), inorganic mercury (I-Hg) and Se were determined in the muscles of four toothed-whale species: bottlenose dolphins (n=31), Risso's dolphins (n=30), striped dolphins (n=29), and short-finned pilot whales (n=30).
