BACKGROUND: Depending on test assays and the time of last DOAC intake, direct thrombin inhibitors (DTI) and direct FXa inhibitors (DXI) may or may not affect prothrombin time (PT), international normalized ratio (INR) or activated thromboplastin time (aPTT) but the clinical impact is unknown.
METHODS: Using data from the Dresden NOAC Registry, we evaluated the impact of DOAC on first PT, INR or aPTT tests during emergency hospitalizations of DTI/DXI patients and the assay performance across 50 coagulation laboratories.
RESULTS: In 724 emergency admissions (77 DTI; 647 DXI), 490 cases (67.7%)

OBJECTIVE: The study explored the ex vivo effects of N. mossambica venom on blood morphology and coagulation.
METHODS: Human blood was exposed ex vivo to 0.15 ng/μl N. mossambica venom. The 20-WBCT and standard laboratory coagulation assays; prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, thrombin time and fibrinogen levels were measured to analyze coagulation. Thromboelastography (TEG) was used to evaluate the viscoelastic properties of whole blood. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to analyze red blood cell (RBC) morphology and clot structure.

Point-of-care testing (POCT) in haematology has seen a significant increase in both the spectrum of tests available and the number of tests performed annually. A greater proportion of blood replacement needs are being met by packed red cell concentrates rather than whole blood in situations of major blood loss. Bovine jugular venous blood was collected, with and without heparin, and aliquoted into 140 12-ml tubes. The physiological role of Schistosomiasis mansoni 22.6 antigen (sm22.6 Ag) and its pathogenic effect on the human host has never been reported. This report of 8 cases (6 severe and 2 mild) heat stroke patients seen during the hot summer of 1987 at Pramongkutklao Hospital, Bangkok, represent the first report of this syndrome in Thailand. Severe cases presented with deep coma, shock, ARDS, DIC and other systemic complications. Two cases of mild heat stroke recovered completely with conventional treatment. Blood coagulation studies carried out on 78 patients up to 30 h after they were bitten by Bothrops jararaca snakes demonstrated clotting defects in 37 patients which included afibrinogenemia, reduced levels of prothrombin, of factors V and VIII, thrombocytopenia and activation of the fibrinolytic system. Factor IX and X levels were within normal range for all patients. These in vitro data suggest that the disseminated intravascular clotting observed in vivo following envenomation may be triggered by the intravascular release of patient thrombin by snake venom enzymes.
