Whole-Body MR Imaging in Cancer Detection: Protocols, Practices, and Future Directions.

Whole-body (WB) MR imaging is practical for staging and monitoring cancers such as multiple myeloma, prostate and breast cancers. Increasingly, WB MR imaging is increasingly used to provide reassurance and detect cancers opportunistically. This article details the Oncologically relevant findings Reporting and Data System for consistent image acquisition, interpretation, and reporting. Studies show cancer detection rates of about 1% to 2% in asymptomatic populations. Challenges include high rates of incidental findings; however, multiparametric characterization limits overdiagnosis. Clear commu

Whole-body muscle magnetic resonance imaging in inflammatory myopathy with mitochondrial pathology.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myopathy with mitochondrial pathology (IM-Mito) is a rare condition described in a few case series, and it is not clear whether it is a specific disease or a variant of Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM). Radiological data of IM-Mito patients has only been evaluated in one study. AIM: To analyze whole-body muscle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features in patients with IM-Mito compared with individuals with IBM. METHODS: Fourteen IM-Mito and ten IBM patients were included. IM-Mito was defined by endomysial inflammatory infiltrate, presence of at least 1% of Cytochrome

Inter-pass motion correction for whole-body dynamic PET and parametric imaging.

Whole-body dynamic FDG-PET imaging through continuous-bed-motion (CBM) mode multi-pass acquisition protocol is a promising metabolism measurement. However, inter-pass misalignment originating from body movement could degrade parametric quantification. We aim to apply a non-rigid registration method for inter-pass motion correction in whole-body dynamic PET. 27 subjects underwent a 90-min whole-body FDG CBM PET scan on a Biograph mCT (Siemens Healthineers), acquiring 9 over-the-heart single-bed passes and subsequently 19 CBM passes (frames). The inter-pass motion correction was executed using n

Chemical Approach to a Whole Body Imaging of Sialo-N-Linked Glycans.

PET and noninvasive fluorescence imaging of the sialo-N-linked glycan derivatives are described. To establish the efficient labeling protocol for N-glycans and/or glycoconjugates, new labeling probes of fluorescence and ⁶⁸Ga-DOTA, as the positron emission nucleus for PET, through rapid 6π-azaelectrocyclization were designed and synthesized, (E)-ester aldehydes. The high reactivity of these probes enabled the labeling of lysine residues in peptides, proteins, and even amino groups on the cell surfaces at very low concentrations of the target molecules (~10⁻⁸ M) within a short reaction time (~5

Whole Body Low Dose Computed Tomography (WBLDCT) Can Be Comparable to Whole-Body Magnetic Resonance Imaging (WBMRI) in the Assessment of Multiple Myeloma.

Aim of the study is to compare the agreement between whole-body low-dose computed tomography (WBLDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (WBMRI) in the evaluation of bone marrow involvement in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Patients with biopsy-proven MM, who underwent both WBLDCT and WBMRI were retrospectively enrolled. After identifying the presence of focal bone involvement (focal infiltration pattern), the whole skeleton was divided into five anatomic districts (skull, spine, sternum and ribs, pelvis, and limbs). Patients were grouped according to the number and location of the lytic les

Whole-Body Atherosclerosis Imaging by Positron Emission Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Imaging: From Mice to Nonhuman Primates.

Cardiovascular disease due to atherosclerosis is still the main cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. This disease is a complex systemic disorder arising from a network of pathological processes within the arterial vessel wall, and, outside of the vasculature, in the hematopoietic system and organs involved in metabolism. Recent years have seen tremendous efforts in the development and validation of quantitative imaging technologies for the noninvasive evaluation of patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Specifically, the advent of combined positron emission tomography and

Interobserver agreement of whole-body magnetic resonance imaging is superior to whole-body computed tomography for assessing disease burden in patients with multiple myeloma.

OBJECTIVES: Whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) is recommended by the International Myeloma Working Group for all patients with asymptomatic myeloma and solitary plasmacytoma and by the UK NICE guidance for all patients with suspected myeloma. Some centres unable to offer WB-MRI offer low-dose whole-body CT (WB-CT). There are no studies comparing interobserver agreement and disease detection of contemporary WB-MRI (anatomical imaging and DWI) versus WB-CT. Our primary aim is to compare the interobserver agreement between WB-CT and WB-MRI in the diagnosis of myeloma. METHODS: Consecutive patients with new

Whole-body vibration: is there a causal relationship to specific imaging findings of the spine?

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic review of the available literature for those studies that evaluated the role of whole-body vibration (WBV) on the spine, using imaging modalities as well as an estimation of WBV exposure. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Numerous comparative studies have reported a possible association between the occurrence of spinal symptoms and exposure to WBV. These exposures have commonly been examined in the work environment largely through self-reported questionnaires only. From a scientific perspective, the majority of studies emphasize s

Detecting Distant Metastases in Prostate Cancer Using Whole-body MR Imaging Together with DWIBS (Diffusion-weighted Imaging with Background Body Signal Suppression).

Whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) has evolved over the past 2 decades as a noninvasive imaging technique for detecting distant metastases in prostate cancer. Since the introduction of diffusion-weighted imaging with background body signal suppression by Takahara et al. in 2004, its clinical use has expanded rapidly, particularly in the detection of bone metastases. WB-MRI offers whole-body coverage without radiation exposure and can be completed within approximately 30 minutes, making it suitable for repeated examinations. Consequently, it is now applied not only for metastasis detection but also for tr

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging in rheumatology: advancements, key applications and future perspectives.

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) is widely used in rheumatology to assess peripheral and axial joints and entheses throughout the body. Despite some limitations, it has potential in determining the overall inflammatory burden, tracking disease progression, and evaluating treatment response. It is used in the evaluation of idiopathic inflammatory myositis (IIM) or in the pediatric population where it is becoming the gold standard for the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions, such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO). In add

Precision medicine in myeloma demands precision imaging: is whole body MRI the solution?

Outcomes for patients with multiple myeloma have improved substantially over the past two decades, with median overall survival more than doubling in many cohorts. Management of smouldering myeloma has also shifted, with randomised trials demonstrating that early intervention in high-risk disease delays progression and improves survival compared with observation alone. Imaging diagnostics must therefore evolve in parallel to provide minimally invasive, sensitive and quantitative insights into disease for patients who will live with myeloma for many years. Here we review the latest evidence for

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging for staging patients with high-risk prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Staging patients with high-risk prostate cancer (HRPCa) with conventional imaging of computed tomography (CT) and bone scintigraphy (BS) is suboptimal. Therefore, we aimed to compare the accuracy of whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WBMRI) with conventional imaging to stage patients with HRPCa. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled patients with newly diagnosed HRPCa (prostate-specific antigen ≥20 ng/ml and/or Grade Group ≥4). Patients underwent BS, CT of the abdomen and pelvis, and WBMRI within 30 days of evaluation. The primary endpoint was the diagnostic performances of detec

Pictorial review of whole body MRI in myeloma: emphasis on diffusion-weighted imaging.

There have been major advances in myeloma imaging over the past few years with focal lesions on imaging now forming part of the disease defining criteria. Whole body diffusion-weighted MRI (WB-MRI) is considered the most sensitive technique for the detection of focal active lesions. This pictorial review will focus on imaging the spectrum of myelomatous disorders on WB-MRI including diffusion and Dixon sequences. The typical imaging patterns of disease are demonstrated including in the contexts of staging, presumed solitary plasmacytoma, smouldering myeloma and examples of paramedullary and ex
