Risk analysis : an official publication of the Society for Risk Analysis2018eng
We assessed transboundary wildfire exposure among federal, state, and private lands and 447 communities in the state of Arizona, southwestern United States. The study quantified the relative magnitude of transboundary (incoming, outgoing) versus nontransboundary (i.e., self-burning) wildfire exposure based on land tenure or community of the simulated ignition and the resulting fire perimeter. We developed and described several new metrics to quantify and map transboundary exposure. We found that incoming transboundary fire accounted for 37% of the total area burned on large parcels of federal

We characterized wildfire transmission and exposure within a matrix of large land tenures (federal, state, and private) surrounding 56 communities within a 3.3 million ha fire prone region of central Oregon US. Wildfire simulation and network analysis were used to quantify the exchange of fire among land tenures and communities and analyze the relative contributions of human versus natural ignitions to wildfire exposure. Among the land tenures examined, the area burned by incoming fires averaged 57% of the total burned area. Community exposure from incoming fires ignited on surrounding land te

Wildfires are a global phenomenon that in some circumstances can result in human casualties, economic loss, and ecosystem service degradation. In this article we spatially identify wildfire risk transmission pathways and locate the areas of highest exposure of human populations to wildland fires under severe, but not uncommon, weather events. We quantify varying levels of exposure in terms of population potentially affected and tie the exposure back to the spatial source of the risk for the Front Range of Colorado, USA. We use probabilistic fire simulation modeling to address where fire igniti

Assisted living communities (ALs) serve a growing population of older adults with long-term care needs, especially those with Alzheimer's and other dementias (ADRD), yet their capacity to prepare for hyper-complex climate-related disasters remains underexamined. Using geographic information systems (GIS), we mapped all licensed ALs with the Oregon Department of Forestry's wildfire hazard scores, and then assessed organizational correlates of preparedness with a representative sample of Oregon ALs (n = 321). ALs located in higher wildfire risk areas reported greater confidence in wildfire prepa

Geochemical anomalies and growth discontinuities in Porites corals from western Sumatra, Indonesia, record unanticipated reef mortality during anomalous Indian Ocean Dipole upwelling and a giant red tide in 1997. Sea surface temperature reconstructions show that although some past upwelling events have been stronger, there were no analogous episodes of coral mortality during the past 7000 years, indicating that the 1997 red tide was highly unusual. We show that iron fertilization by the 1997 Indonesian wildfires was sufficient to produce the extraordinary red tide, leading to reef death by asp

Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and aerosols are the dominant species emitted by wildfires, affecting air quality and contributing to global greenhouse gases. This study implements the APIFLAME fire emissions model, the EDGAR anthropogenic emission inventory, the WRF weather prediction model, and the CHIMERE chemical transport model to simulate air quality during wildfires. Three configurations assessed the impact of smoke injection height: a standard configuration with a plume rise model and fixed heights at 2500 and 5000 m. The case study is a wildfire in Patagon

A quantitative methodology using high resolution mass spectrometry was developed for the identification of organic compounds derived from wildfires in surface water samples. The methodology involves the use of solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by detection using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight-mass spectrometry (LC/Q-TOF-MS) for a group of fourteen chemical compounds (pyridine, benzene, naphthalene and biphenyl polycarboxylic acids). All compounds were successfully separated chromatographically using a reversed phase column and they were identified by accurate mass using th

In July 2012, two simultaneous wildfires burnt a big area in Valencia (Spain), where a birth cohort study (INMA) is being developed. The heavy smoke covered the whole INMA study area for several days. We aimed at evaluating the 2012 Valencia wildfire effects on the health of children enrolled in the INMA-Valencia cohort. Two weeks after the extinction of the wildfires, a phone survey was conducted and finally 460 individuals were enrolled. We considered a wildfire period (12-day interval when they were active) and a control period (12-day interval just before wildfires). Parents were asked abo

INTRODUCTION: In 2007 wildfires ravaged Southern California resulting in the largest evacuation due to a wildfire in American history. We report how these wildfires affected emergency department (ED) visits for respiratory illness.
METHODS: We extracted data from a Kaiser Permanente database for a single metropolitan community ED. We compared the number of visits due to respiratory illness at time intervals of 2 weeks before and during the time when the fires were burning. We counted the total number of patients with chief complaint of dyspnea, cough, and asthma and final international classi

In October 2007, wildfires burned nearly 300,000 acres in San Diego County, California. Emergency risk communication messages were broadcast to reduce community exposure to air pollution caused by the fires. The objective of this investigation was to determine residents' exposure to, understanding of, and compliance with these messages. From March to June 2008, the authors surveyed San Diego County residents using a 40-question instrument and random digit dialing. The 1,802 respondents sampled were predominantly 35-64 years old (65.9%), White (65.5%), and educated past high school (79.0%). Mos

Prescribed burns are valuable tools for landscape management, which reduce wildfire risk in fire-prone ecosystems. However, they generate smoke emissions containing hazardous pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and black carbon (BC). Here, PAHs were analyzed in atmospheric particulate matter (PM2.5) filters in firefighter's personal real-time BC monitors during prescribed burns and wildfires between 2022 and 2024 in Catalonia (NE Spain). The innovative analytical method using gas-chromatography coupled to Q-exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry (GC-Orbitrap-MS) allows the

IMPORTANCE: A growing body of research suggests that exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5; particle size 2.5 microns or smaller) may be associated with mental health outcomes. However, the potential impact of wildfire-specific PM2.5 exposure on mental health remains underexplored.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether wildfire-specific PM2.5 exposure may be associated with emergency department (ED) visits for mental health conditions, including all-cause and for psychoactive substance use, nonmood psychotic disorders, anxiety, depression, and other mood-affective disorders during the extens

Wildland fires and windthrows represent relevant disturbances for forest ecosystems worldwide. In this context, especially for Italian catchments, the interaction between windthrows and changes in wildfire behaviour starting from ALS data processing is scarcely investigated. Therefore, this research aims to compute a multi-temporal analysis of the interaction between windthrows and wildfire behaviour in a forested area (Veneto region, northern Italy), recently affected by the renamed Vaia windstorm. The semi-empirical FlamMap model was applied, starting from ALS data processing implemented in

The increasing frequency and severity of wildfires are among the most visible impacts of climate change. However, the effects of wildfires on mercury (Hg) transformations and bioaccumulation in stream ecosystems are poorly understood. We sampled soils, water, sediment, in-stream leaf litter, periphyton, and aquatic invertebrates in 36 burned (one-year post fire) and 21 reference headwater streams across the northwestern U.S. to evaluate the effects of wildfire occurrence and severity on total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) transport and bioaccumulation. Suspended particulate THg and MeHg co

UNLABELLED: The frequency and severity of wildfires in the Western United States have increased over recent decades, motivating hypotheses that wildfires contribute to the incidence of coccidioidomycosis, an emerging fungal disease in the Western United States with sharp increases in incidence observed since 2000. While coccidioidomycosis outbreaks have occurred among wildland firefighters clearing brush, it remains unknown whether fires are associated with an increased incidence among the general population.
METHODS: We identified 19 wildfires occurring within California's highly endemic San

OBJECTIVES: To determine the association between wildfire-specific particulate matter 2.5 (wPM2.5) exposure and the overall and site-specific incidences of head and neck and aerodigestive cancer (HNC).
STUDY DESIGN: Epidemiological retrospective cohort analysis.
METHODS: HNC incidence data were derived from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (2016-2022). The relationship between county-level wPM2.5 exposure metrics and HNC incidence rates were examined using a distributed lag non-linear model, adjusting for health behaviors (tobacco/alcohol use, diet, exercise, and sexua

In 1910, the U.S. federal government began an official policy of suppressing wildfires. Decades later it became understood that the giant sequoia, the world's most massive tree, is serotinous and depends upon fire to effectively reproduce. For a century, fire was almost completely excluded from giant sequoia groves, until a series of lightning fires over the past decade. After these fires, U.S. land managers hypothesized that the blazes had caused unprecedented levels of high-severity fire due to a century of fire suppression and fuel accumulation. Based on this assumption, U.S. legislation is
